(New Prescription) For conditions such as deficiency of True Yin (True Yin, the fundamental yin substance of the body), spleen deficiency leading to bleeding, or mild diarrhea, the treatment focuses on the Spleen; hence it is called the "Five Yin" formula. Lubricating and purgative herbs should be avoided; this formula is suitable for primary treatment.
Prepared Rehmannia Root (Shu Di Huang) [5-7 qian or 1 liang], Chinese Yam (Shan Yao) [2 qian, stir-fried], Lablab Bean (Bian Dou) [2-3 qian, stir-fried], Roasted Licorice Root (Zhi Gan Cao) [1-2 qian], Poria (Fu Ling) [1.5 qian], Peony Root (Shao Yao) [2 qian, stir-fried until slightly yellow], Schisandra Berry (Wu Wei Zi) [20 grains], Ginseng Root (Ren Shen) [as appropriate], Atractylodes Rhizome (Bai Zhu) [1-2 qian, stir-fried].
Add two cups of water, along with twenty heartless Lotus Seeds (Lian Rou), decoct, and take orally.
Indicated for deficiency of True Yin, essence, and blood; in women, for delayed menstruation and scanty menstrual blood; for pain in the lower back, knees, bones, and tendons; or for epigastric and abdominal pain caused by Qi and Blood deficiency-cold.
Angelica Sinensis Root (Dang Gui) [2-3 qian or 5 qian], Prepared Rehmannia Root (Shu Di Huang) [3-7 qian], Goji Berry (Gou Qi Zi) [2 qian], Roasted Licorice Root (Zhi Gan Cao) [1-2 qian], Eucommia Bark (Du Zhong) [2 qian], Achyranthes Root (Niu Xi) [1.5 qian], Cinnamon Bark (Rou Gui) [1-2 qian].
Add two cups of water, decoct until reduced to 70%, and take warm well after meals. If cold stagnation in the meridians prevents the smooth flow of Qi and Blood, causing severe bone and tendon pain, processed Aconite Root (Zhi Fu Zi) [2 qian] must be added for efficacy. If accompanied by turbid leukorrhea and abdominal pain, add stir-fried Psoralea Fruit (Gu Zhi/Bu Gu Zhi) [1 qian]. In cases of Qi deficiency, add Ginseng Root (Ren Shen) and Atractylodes Rhizome (Bai Zhu). For middle-Jiao Qi deficiency-cold presenting with vomiting and nausea, add stir-fried Dried Ginger (Chao Gan Jiang) [1-2 qian].
Indicated for blood deficiency and Yin deficiency; this is a formula with mild and balanced properties.
Angelica Sinensis Root (Dang Gui) [2 qian], Prepared Rehmannia Root (Shu Di Huang) [2-3 qian], Peony Root (Shao Yao) [2 qian, wine-stir-fried], Goji Berry (Gou Qi Zi) [2 qian], Chinese Yam (Shan Yao) [2 qian, stir-fried], Roasted Licorice Root (Zhi Gan Cao) [1 qian].
Add two cups of water, decoct until reduced to 70%, and take warm well after meals. If Ying (Nutritive) Qi deficiency occurs in the upper Jiao, manifesting as fright, palpitations, insomnia, and excessive sweating, add Sour Jujube Seed (Zao Ren) and Poria (Fu Shen) [each 2 qian]. If Ying deficiency is combined with cold, remove Peony Root (Shao Yao) and add Fresh Ginger (Sheng Jiang). If there is Qi stagnation with pain, add Cyperus Rhizome (Xiang Fu) [1-2 qian] to guide the action.
This formula treats conditions such as failure of Heart and Kidney interaction.
Prepared Rehmannia Root (Shu Di Huang) [5 liang, crushed], Raw Rehmannia Root (Sheng Di Huang) [3 liang], Poria (Fu Shen) [1.5 liang], Polygala Root (Yuan Zhi) [8 qian], Donkey-Hide Gelatin (E Jiao) [2 liang, stir-fried into beads], Egg Yolk (Ji Zi Huang) [6 pieces], Roasted Licorice Root (Zhi Gan Cao) [1 liang], Lotus Seed Meat (Lian Rou) [4 liang].
(This formula uses both raw and prepared Rehmannia Root, possessing the subtle effect of reversing Yin and Yang, achieving the state where Water and Fire interact harmoniously. Fu Shen unblocks Heart Qi to descend and interact with the Kidney; the red egg yolk enters the Heart to supplement the Qi within Li (Fire); Yuan Zhi unblocks Kidney Qi to ascend and interact with the Heart; the black E Jiao enters the Kidney to supplement the Essence within Kan (Water). This allows Water and Fire to blend into a unified Qi, mutually supporting each other. However, this mediating role relies entirely on the "Yellow Mother" (Spleen Earth); thus, Lian Rou and Gan Cao are used to tonify Earth, serving as assistants for communicating between the Upper and Lower Jiao.)
First, crush the Rehmannia roots thoroughly, mix with refined honey, and form pills the size of tung tree seeds. Take 3 qian orally before meals on an empty stomach, washed down with boiling white water. If slight heat signs appear, add Ophiopogon Tuber (Mai Dong) or Scrophularia Root (Xuan Shen) [2 liang], as appropriate. In cases without cold or heat, add Dodder Seed (Tu Si Zi) [2 liang] and Ginseng Root (Ren Shen) [2 liang]. If Heart Qi floats and fails to consolidate into Essence, add Schisandra Berry (Wu Wei Zi) [1 liang] and Poria (Fu Ling) [1 liang].
