Treats the decline of Mingmen Fire (Fire of the Gate of Life), which fails to warm and transform Spleen Earth, resulting in deficiency-cold of the Spleen and Stomach, poor appetite, loose stools, or coldness and fatigue/pain in the Lower Yuan (Lower Origin/Kidneys and Bladder). As Master Wang Taipu stated: "Benefit the source of fire to dissipate yin shadows," this refers to that principle. It is the previous Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill) with added Rougui (Cinnamon Bark) and Zhi Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root), each one liang.
Treats severe depletion of Qi and Blood in men and women, loss of spirit retention, and critical conditions. This is the primary formula for restoring life, assisting transformation, saving the root, and cultivating the Yuan Qi: Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, tonifies Qi and Yang, serves as the chief herb; dosage 1–2 qian if mild, 1–2 liang if severe), Shudi (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix, tonifies Essence and Yin, serves as the deputy herb; dosage 2–3 qian if mild, 2–3 liang if severe), Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma, 2 qian, stir-fried), Duzhong (Eucommiae Cortex, 2 qian), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 2–3 qian; omit if diarrhea is present), Gouqi (Lycii Fructus, 2–3 qian), Yurou (Corni Fructus, 1 qian; omit if sour taste is aversive), Zhigancao (Prepared Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1–2 qian). Add two zhong of water, decoct until reduced to seven-tenths, and take warm well after meals. If there is insufficiency of Yuan Yang with excessive cold, add Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex), Paojiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Preparatum), etc., according to suitability. If Qi deficiency predominates, add Huangqi (Astragali Radix) and Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma). If there is stagnation in the stomach region, this formula should not be used. If there is blood stasis, add Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma) and remove Yurou (Corni Fructus). If there is slippery diarrhea/incontinence, add Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus) and Guzhi (Psoraleae Fructus), etc.
This is a formula for strengthening Water (nourishing Yin). For cases where Mingmen Yin is deficient and Yang is hyperactive, this formula should be modified and used as the principal treatment.
Shudi (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix, 2–3 qian or increased to 1–2 liang), Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma, 2 qian), Gouqi (Lycii Fructus, 2 qian).
Add two zhong of water, decoct until reduced to seven-tenths, and take well after meals. If there is Lung heat with restlessness, add Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix, 2 qian). If there is blood stasis, add Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex, 2 qian). If there is Heart heat, add Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix, 2 qian). If there is Spleen heat with easy hunger, add Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 2 qian). If there is Kidney heat with bone-steaming fever and profuse sweating, add Digupi (Bark of Lycium Root, 2 qian). If there is reckless movement due to Blood heat, add Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix, 2–3 qian). If there is Yin deficiency with inner restlessness, add Nvzhenzi (Ligustri Lucidi Fructus, 2 qian). If there is excess above and deficiency below, add Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, 2 qian) to guide downward. If there is Blood deficiency with dryness and stagnation, add Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 2 qian).
