The third method is to calm the blood. After hematemesis has ceased and stasis has dissipated, if bleeding recurs after several days or dozens of days due to the surging movement of blood, it is because the blood fails to remain in its normal course. It is necessary to employ methods that calm the blood so that it may become tranquil and the patient may recover. This therapeutic principle is already implicit in the processes of stopping vomiting and eliminating stasis. However, the preceding formulas are often potent and drastic to achieve efficacy, which constitutes a strategy akin to suppressing bandits rather than a policy of pacification. Therefore, the principles of calming the blood are specifically elucidated anew to fully utilize their application. If hematemesis is caused by external contraction of wind-cold, and after cessation of bleeding the Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive) levels remain unharmonized, symptoms such as body pain and alternating chills and fever will inevitably appear; this is treated with Xiangsu Yin (Fragrant Perilla Decoction) added with Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Danpi (Moutan Cortex), and Ejiao (Colla Corii Asini). If there is residual heat in the Stomach channel causing dryness of Qi and injury to Blood, leading to blood instability, symptoms include thirst, hiccups, aversion to hearing human voices, irritability, anger,惊 (fright) upon hearing the sound of wood, and restless sleep; this is primarily treated with Xijiao Dihuang Tang (Rhino Horn and Rehmannia Decoction). In severe cases, it is combined with Baihu Tang (White Tiger Decoction) for profound clearing and cooling to purge Stomach heat; in mild cases, only Ganlu Yin (Sweet Dew Decoction) is used to generate Stomach fluids, allowing the blood to heal spontaneously. If lung dryness causes Qi to lose its clear and harmonious state, failing to maintain its moistening and regulating function, resulting in wheezing, coughing, and other symptoms that disturb the blood, Qingzao Jiufei Tang (Moistening Dryness and Saving the Lung Decoction) is primarily indicated. If fire is excessive, add Xijiao (Rhino Horn); if Blood deficiency exists, add Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix); if phlegm is abundant, add Jianbei (Fritillariae Thunbergii Bulbus). This formula, which moistens dryness and calms the blood, is an excellent prescription for conditions such as Fei Wei (Lung Atrophy). Ge Kejiu
