[Fennel (Huixiang)]
Taste: Pungent. Nature: Warm. Toxicity: Non-toxic. It derives its qi from the harmonious interaction of Earth and Metal, and is generated by combining with the Yang qi of Heaven. Its action is ascending; it belongs to Yang within Yang. There are three varieties.
[Indications] Primarily warms the Dantian. (Wu Shou) Tonifies insufficiency of the Mingmen (Gate of Vitality). (Li Dongyuan) Treats cold qi in the Bladder and Stomach, as well as Xiao Chang Qi (Small Intestine Qi pain), regulates the Middle Jiao, and stops vomiting. [Meridian Tropism] Enters the Heart, Spleen, and Bladder meridians. It is a substance for warming the Kidney and treating Cold. (Also acts as a tonic.)
[Preliminary Discussion] Li Zhongzi stated: Hernia (Shan) has seven types: Qi, Blood, Cold, Water, Sinew, Fox, etc. Diseases of the Liver Meridian do not belong to the Kidney, because the Liver meridian connects to the external genitalia. It is often caused by phlegm-dampness.
Li Shizhen stated: The eight-pointed variety imported from foreign ships is called Star Anise (Ba Jiao Hui Xiang); use it after stir-frying until yellow. It works well with wine; when combined with salt, it enters the Kidney and can disperse Kidney pathogenic factors, thus treating Yin hernia. Those large like wheat grains, light in weight, and with fine ridges are called Da Hui (Large Fennel), produced in Ningxia. Those produced elsewhere and smaller are called Xiao Hui (Small Fennel); both should be used after stir-frying until yellow.
[Contraindications] Miao Xiyong stated: Those with excessive fire in the Stomach and Kidney, frequent erections (Yang Dao Ju Ju), or vomiting upon getting warm should avoid it.

[Lv Gan Shi (Calamina)]
Taste: Sweet. Nature: Warm. Toxicity: Non-toxic. It is formed by condensing the qi of Gold and Silver.
[Indications] Primarily stops bleeding, reduces swelling and toxicity, generates flesh, brightens the eyes, removes nebulae, reduces redness, absorbs dampness, and heals ulcers. When applied to the eyes together with Bing Pian (Borneolum Syntheticum), it treats all kinds of eye diseases.
[Meridian Tropism] Enters the Stomach meridian. It is a substance for brightening the eyes. (Essential drug for Ophthalmology; Metal overcomes Wood, Dryness overcomes Dampness.)
[Preliminary Discussion] Li Shizhen stated: I once used this stone (calcined), Hai Piao Xiao (Cuttlefish Bone), and Peng Sha (Borax), each one liang, ground into an extremely fine powder, to apply for various eye diseases, which was very effective. Adding Zhu Sha (Cinnabar) five qian makes the texture non-sticky.
Zhang Jiebin (Zhong Chun) stated: When Ying Qi (Nutritive Qi) does not flow smoothly and reverses into the muscle tissue, abscesses and swellings occur. Sweet-warm substances can unblock the blood vessels, thereby reducing swelling.
Commentary: Lv Gan Shi treats eye diseases because the eyes require blood nourishment to see. If blood is deficient, there is a feeling of tightness and photophobia. Alternatively, Wind-Heat may obstruct upwards, causing redness, ulceration, and corneal opacity.
[Liu Huang (Sulfur)]
Taste: Sour. Nature: Very Hot. Toxicity: Toxic. It is generated by inheriting Fire qi. Its action is ascending; it belongs to Yang. It is incompatible with Xi Xin (Asari Radix) and Pu Xiao (Mirabilite). Sulfur poisoning can be treated with a decoction of Hei Qian (Black Lead).
[Indications] Primarily treats female yin erosion, carbuncles, hemorrhoids, and foul blood. (Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing) Treats accumulations and masses in the heart and abdomen, cold phlegm-rheum in the hypochondrium, cold pain and weakness in the legs.
[Meridian Tropism] Enters the Mingmen (Gate of Vitality) and Pericardium meridians. It is a substance for tonifying Yang. (Specifically tonifies insufficiency of the True Fire of the Mingmen.)
[Preliminary Discussion] Kou Zongshi stated: Sulfur is a miraculous drug for emergency rescue, but one must stop taking it once the disease is cured; do not take the full dose indefinitely. People generally know to use it and feel fortunate, but do not know... (Text truncated)
