The term "Da Feng Zheng" (Great Wind Syndrome) is comprehensively documented in various medical texts without omission. *Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* (Source Book of All Pathologies and Symptomatology) states: "Feng Lai" (Wind Leprosy) and "Lai Chuang" (Leprous Sores) differ only in severity, but their harmful nature is identical.
After Lai Chuang heals, the physical form can be restored; however, after Feng Lai heals, the primordial Qi (vital energy) is difficult to fully recover. Few die from Lai Chuang, while many die from Feng Lai; generally, neither belongs to favorable syndromes.
"Huo Lai" (Fire Leprosy) and "Xi Shuai Lai" (Cricket Leprosy) refer to Heart Lai, caused by pathogenic factors affecting the Heart.
This syndrome initially presents as sores resembling burns, varying in size. Some resemble tinea with cracking skin, potentially leading to necrosis and loss of limbs or toes. It recurs after healing because the heart has been poisoned for seven years, allowing the disease root to flourish. Eyebrows and eyelashes fall out, and the condition progresses to flaccidity and weakness of the hands and feet. Another manifestation involves scattered red-purple macules on the skin, resembling scars, which may resolve spontaneously within ten days or even five to six days. However, heart toxins subsequently generate sores that do not heal quickly and are contagious, capable of transmitting to others.
This condition arises from residual toxins consolidating internally following Huo Lai. The appearance resembles a cricket, with worm-like patterns emerging internally, causing sensations of insects burrowing through the joints. Various orifices appear ready to bleed; the forehead ulcerates, the nose rots, lips are destroyed and severed, teeth fall out, paralysis makes movement difficult, and there may be sudden惊跳 (startle/jumping), trembling, and excessive fear. Eyes may become red, ulcerated, tearful, and painful, indicating intense Heart Fire.
"Mu Lai" (Wood Leprosy) and "Feng Lai" (Wind Leprosy) refer to Liver Lai, caused by pathogenic factors affecting the Liver.
This syndrome initially presents like insect-induced tinea, varying in size and color (red or white). Some appear as linked coins with uneven surfaces, commonly known as "Mian Hua Chuang" (Cotton Sore). Over time, they merge into patches of foul-smelling rot. Eyebrows and eyelashes fall out, the face and eyes itch, and the condition recurs intermittently without a fixed schedule. After three years, it becomes a severe affliction; when liver function fails, it is difficult to treat. Another variant resembles cotton seeds, with raised, hard nodules resulting from fire-toxin transformation into erosive tinea that does not heal.
This condition arises after Mu Lai, where toxins accumulate in the Liver Meridian. This causes pulling pain in the tendons and joints of the four limbs. In severe cases, patients cry out in pain and cannot turn over. Skin and hair become dry and withered. Elbows and knees swell and deform, resembling He Xi Feng (Crane Knee Wind) or Bai Hu Feng (White Tiger Wind). There is putrefaction, foulness, paralysis, altered voice, and distorted appearance. Toxins may also gather in the hypochondrium and abdomen, spreading upward to ulcerate the intestines and stomach, or erode the ears. These are all manifestations of Lai toxin.
"Tu Lai" (Earth Leprosy) and "Pi Lai" (Spleen Leprosy) refer to Spleen Lai, caused by pathogenic factors affecting the Spleen.
