[Da Lun] The human heart has seven apertures and three hairs. After childbirth, when the body is weak, it often leads to the stagnation and accumulation of foul blood, which blocks the orifices of the heart, preventing the spirit and consciousness from being clear. Furthermore, the Heart Qi connects with the tongue; if Heart Qi is blocked, the tongue becomes stiff, resulting in aphasia. One should simply administer Qizhen San (Seven Treasures Powder).
[Xue Ji's Commentary] The Classics state: "The meridian of the Large Intestine scatters below the tongue." It also states: "When the meridian of the Spleen undergoes change, the disease manifests as stiffness of the root of the tongue and inability to speak." It further states: "The divergent meridian of the Kidney enters upward into the Heart and connects with the root of the tongue; deficiency results in the inability to speak." I believe that for the aforementioned conditions, if there is Qi deficiency of the Heart and Kidney, use Qizhen San (Seven Treasures Powder). If there is Kidney deficiency with Wind-Heat, use Dihuang Yinzi (Rehmannia Decoction). If there is Wind-Heat in the Large Intestine, use Jiawei Xiaoyao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) added with Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root) and Baizhi (Angelica Dahurica). If there is Wind-Heat in the Spleen Meridian, use Qinjiao Shengma Tang (Gentian and Cimicifuga Decoction). If there is Wind-Heat in the Liver Meridian, use Chaihu Qinggan San (Bupleurum Liver-Clearing Powder) added with Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root) and Baizhi (Angelica Dahurica). If there is Qi stagnation and knotting in the Spleen, use Jiawei Guipi Tang (Modified Restore the Spleen Decoction) added with Shengma (Cimicifuga Rhizome). If Liver Wood is excessive, use Xiao Chaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) added with Gouteng (Uncaria Ramulus cum Uncis). If the Spleen is affected by Wood overacting on Earth (Earth insulted by Wood), use Liujun Zi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) added with Shengma (Cimicifuga Rhizome), Baizhi (Angelica Dahurica), and Gouteng (Uncaria Ramulus cum Uncis). If there is Blood deficiency of the Liver and Spleen, use Foshou San (Buddha's Hand Powder). If there is Spleen Qi deficiency, use Sijun Zi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction). If there is joint deficiency of Qi and Blood, use Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasures Decoction); if ineffective, use Dushen Tang (Single Ginseng Decoction); if still ineffective, urgently add Fuzi (Aconite Lateralis Radix Preparata) to tonify Qi and generate Blood. If one merely uses Blood-tonifying herbs, it would be a mistake. A postpartum woman suffering from aphasia was cured by taking Qizhen San (Seven Treasures Powder). Later, she suffered from aphasia again, accompanied by internal heat and afternoon tidal fever, limb fatigue, and loss of appetite. She was treated primarily with Jiawei Guipi Tang (Modified Restore the Spleen Decoction) supplemented with Qizhen San (Seven Treasures Powder) and recovered. Subsequently, due to anger, she developed aphasia, lockjaw, opisthotonos (hyperextension of the back), convulsions of the hands and feet, occasional hematuria, and facial color changes ranging from red, blue-green, or yellow, sometimes mixed with red. I said: A blue-green complexion indicates the true color of the Liver; yellow indicates Spleen Qi deficiency; red indicates Heart Blood deficiency. She was treated with Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasures Decoction) added with Gouteng (Uncaria Ramulus cum Uncis), Fuling (Poria), and Yuanzhi (Polygala Root), gradually improving, and subsequently cured with Jiawei Guipi Tang (Modified Restore the Spleen Decoction).
