[Daquan] Whenever childbirth is completed, drink a cup of hot child's urine. Do not lie down immediately; instead, sit with eyes closed for a moment, then go to bed. Supine position is preferred over lateral position. The knees should be kept upright and legs unextended, with the head propped high against the headboard. The mattress should be thick, and the four walls covered tightly without gaps to prevent invasion by "thief wind" (pathogenic wind). Apply vinegar to the nose, or use vinegar-smoked charcoal and burnt lacquerware fumes. Additionally, massage from the heart down to below the umbilicus to prevent stagnation of lochia (postpartum discharge of blood and mucus). Maintain this for three days to prevent blood vertigo (dizziness/syncope due to blood loss or stasis) and blood rebellion (rebellious qi and blood). Regardless of abdominal pain or illness, mix half a cup of wine with child's urine and take warm, five to seven times, which is excellent. Although wine promotes blood circulation, do not consume too much, as it may draw blood to the limbs and cause dizziness. It is advisable to frequently eat small amounts of white rice porridge. After one month, small amounts of mutton and pig trotters can be eaten. Still, one must be cautious with speech, regulate the Seven Emotions (joy, anger, worry, thought, sadness, fear, fright), avoid extreme cold and heat, and refrain from combing hair or washing feet, taking one hundred days as the duration. If the patient's qi and blood are inherently weak, regardless of the time elapsed, failure to care properly will result in symptoms such as soreness and pain in the hands, feet, waist, and legs, known as "Ru Lao" (postpartum consumptive disease), which is the most difficult to treat. At the time of initial delivery, do not ask about the gender of the baby, lest speech deplete qi, or love/hate stir qi, both of which can cause disease. Do not live alone, lest causing empty fright; do not scrape the tongue, lest damaging heart qi; do not brush teeth, lest causing blood rebellion. Only after qi and blood have stabilized can one attend to affairs. Violating taboos when symptoms are slight as an autumn feather results in illness heavy as a mountain; how can one not be vigilant? (Chen Cangqi said: Soak ramie fibers and give the juice to the parturient woman to stop bleeding and vertigo. For postpartum abdominal pain, placing ramie on the abdomen stops the pain.) If the parturient woman rests according to these methods, the zang-fu organs will harmonize, and various ailments will be avoided. One should first take Heishen San (Black Divine Powder), Siwu Tang (Four Substance Decoction), Sishun Lizhong Wan (Four-Obedience Regulate Middle Pill), and Qibao San (Seven Treasures Powder). If there is high fever and headache, this indicates the milk channels are about to flow; use Yulu San (Jade Dew Powder). If the head and eyes are unclear, it is blood vertigo; use Qinghun San (Clear Soul Powder). If food tastes bland, it is deficiency of stomach qi; use Sishun Lizhong Wan.
[Danxi] Someone asked: A woman who has just given birth has depleted her good blood (normal blood), and foul blood (stasis) may remain. Is Heishen San not an essential medicine? I replied: The principle of Kun Yuan (the generative power of Earth) is that all things are born; this is the constant law. A woman who has just given birth does not necessarily have depleted good blood, accumulated foul blood, or cold zang-fu organs. Why use medicine? Diligent care of diet and起居 (daily life) prevents disease. If there is indeed foul blood, and the body is weak and cold, giving a few doses is simple and effective. If there are other diseases, one must seek the cause and determine which meridian is affected. Treat qi disorders by regulating qi, and blood disorders by regulating blood. Why stick rigidly to this formula and force everyone to take it? Suppose there are those with irritable temperaments, emaciated bodies, pre-existing fire-heat, or those sitting confinement in summer encountering fire-climates; ginger and cinnamon are forbidden medicines. Furthermore, the nursing methods mentioned are contrary to reason. Meat broths stimulate fire in the yin meridians, easily leading to internal injury diseases. Ancient sages had warnings; why use rich mutton and chicken broths to make gruel and take them regularly? Danggui Wan (Angelica Pill), Danggui Jianzhong Tang (Angelica Decocting Middle Decoction), and Sishun Lizhong Wan are tonics but are biased towards heat. If the zang-fu are not cold, where can they bear it? When a baby is born, the mother's abdomen suddenly expands. Eating eggs and salty meat immediately—considering eggs are hard to digest and salty meat generates heat—leads to complications whose causes are unknown. Prescribing medicine rashly, does this not harm people? I often see healthy postpartum women; I teach them to discard Heishen San, eggs, salty meat, and other meats, relying only on white rice porridge for nourishment, occasionally adding a little dried fish boiled lightly. After half a month, give a little meat. Eggs must also be cracked and boiled lightly to greatly nourish the stomach and dispel disease. Those wealthy families and indulgent women suddenly suffer from white-head wind (headache with leukorrhea), qi pain, chest fullness, rebellious phlegm, dry mouth, irregular menstruation, hair loss, and fatigue. These are diseases of excess yang and deficiency yin. Innate qi and blood are naturally peaceful. To say they are excessive or deficient, how do we know if this is not caused by such confusion and error?
*Qianjin Fang* says: Only after one hundred days postpartum may intercourse occur; otherwise, until death, weakness and wasting increase, and myriad diseases grow. Be cautious. All women suffering from wind pathogens and cold deficiency below the navel usually do so because of early sexual activity. Within seven days postpartum, when foul blood is not yet exhausted, decoctions should not be taken. Wait until the mass below the navel dissipates before consuming mutton soup. This does not apply to cases of severe pain. After two or three days of feeling comfortable, Zelan Wan (Lycopus Pill) can be taken. It is best to finish this pill medication by the end of the month; otherwise, deficiency cannot be restored. In cases of extreme emaciation beyond rescue, Wushi Zelan Wan (Five Minerals Lycopus Pill) is used for supplementation. Medication must start after seven days; do not take it early.
For women who give birth in summer, cool themselves excessively, and contract wind-cold leading to abdominal accumulation and myriad diseases ending in death, which resist all treatments, Taoren Jian (Peach Kernel Paste) is the main treatment. Take this after leaving confinement. Even if women are healthy, they must take one or two doses every autumn and winter until the end of the year; regular consumption is ideal.
Danxi said: Postpartum, tonifying qi and blood is the priority. Even if there are miscellaneous syndromes, treat them as secondary. Postpartum, sweating-releasing methods are contraindicated. Postpartum, Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix) should not be used, as its sour and cold nature damages the generating qi.

[Diagnosis] If the Cun Kou pulse (radial artery at the wrist) is surging, rapid, and irregular after childbirth, death ensues. If the pulse is deep, faint, and continuous upon pressing to the bone, life is preserved. For a woman who has just given birth and is nursing, if the pulse is deep, small, and slippery, life is preserved; if solid, large, firm, wiry, and rapid, death ensues.
