Danthu (carbuncle-like rash) caused by food stagnation occurs because the Qi of the Spleen and Stomach is not yet sufficient. Excessive intake of milk and food cannot be transformed and transported, leading to heat accumulation internally that reaches the muscle surface.
If caused by food stagnation, first use Baohe Wan (Preserve Harmony Pill) to dissipate it; if there is constipation, add Rhubarb (Da Huang) in appropriate amounts to unblock the bowels. Once the food stagnation has been resolved but the Danthu persists, treat with Qingzhong Jieyu Tang (Clear the Middle and Resolve Depression Decoction). After the Danthu pathogen is eliminated but the infant still lacks appetite, tonify with Wuyi Yigong San (Five-Ingredient Powder for Extraordinary Merit). If there is fever with thirst, or reduced desire for food, tonify with Qiwei Baizhu San (Seven-Ingredient Powder for White Atractylodes). Generally, those caused by rich and greasy foods present with a red halo spreading slowly. Those caused by drinking distilled spirits or accidentally ingesting arsenic trioxide (Xinshi) present with a red halo all over the body, spreading very rapidly. Additionally, when sores and ulcers erupt, they are surrounded by a red halo; when the heat dissipates or pus discharges, they subside naturally. All such cases contraindicate Bianfa (scarification therapy), and treatment should primarily focus on stabilizing the interior rather than using attacking methods. If spontaneous vomiting and diarrhea occur, do not forcibly stop them, as vomiting and diarrhea contain the mechanism of dispersing pathogens. For cases caused by drinking distilled spirits, drink one or two cups of cold rice vinegar to detoxify, which is a miraculous method.
If the infant suffers due to the mother consuming excessive roasted, fried, or rich foods, drinking distilled spirits, taking pungent-hot dry drugs, or suffering Liver-Spleen injury from depression and anger, treat according to the principles for fetal heat toxic sores.
[Zeng's experience] Within one hundred days after birth, or after half a year, an infant suddenly presents with slightly raised red halos on both eyelids, a cyan-dark facial complexion, nighttime irritability and crying, or a face red like rouge, indicating latent heat within. There are also cases where the face is not red; initially, this is because during gestation, the mother suffered severe fright, causing fright pathogen to injure the fetus, transmitting sequentially, manifesting externally. Initially, it scatters across the whole face, resembling water blisters, with slightly red but not prominent bases, appearing and disappearing irregularly, then spreading to the neck, red like cinnabar, named Jingdan (Fright Danthu). First wash the eyes with Sixian San (Four Holy Powders); then decoct Baixie San (Hundred Resolving Powder) together with Wuhe Tang (Five Harmonizing Decoction) to resolve fright heat, Danthu, and toxicity. Niubang Tang (Arctium Decoction), Danggui San (Angelica Powder), Sansjie San (Three Resolving Powders), and Huangqin Siwu Tang (Scutellaria Four Substances Decoction) can all be used for treatment. If Jingdan spreads to the chest and breast area, accompanied by slight phlegm-wheeze and convulsions, urgently scatter heat and extract toxins to prevent internal flow, which would cause significant harm. Decoct Wuhe Tang with Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Sheng Gan Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Recens), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), and Dengxincao (Junci Medulla) to take warm, which will resolve spontaneously; subsequently regulate with the aforementioned medicines to prevent other complications. Alternatively, administer Wan'an Yin (Ten Thousand Peace Drink).
Huangqin Siwu Tang: Treats various sores, Danthu, red tumors, and dry itching.
Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 1 liang), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, wine-washed), Rehmanniae Radix Recens (Sheng Gan Dihuang), Paeoniae Radix Rubra (Chishao), Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong) [each of these four is 0.5 liang], Polygoni Multiflori Caulis (Heshouwu, remove coarse skin), Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata (Caowu, processed, remove skin), Scrophulariae Radix (Xuanshen) [each of these three is 2.5 qian], Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 6 qian), Menthae Haplocalycis Herba (Bohe, 2 qian).
Coarsely crush the herbs. For each dose, use one cup of water, decoct to seven-tenths, take warm at any time.
Sixian San (for newborns whose eyes do not open), Shijie San (for fright), Wuhe Tang (for fever), Niubang Tang (for throat conditions), Danggui San, Sansjie San (all for fever).
