Luo Qianfu treated the four-year-old son of Wei Jingfu. After following an elder monk to touch the crown and receive precepts, while monks chanted spells, he became greatly frightened, leading to shock convulsions. Phlegm-saliva obstructed heavily, eyes showed much white sclera, neck and back were stiff and rigid, sounds were heard in the throat. He woke up after about one hour. Later, every time he saw people in black clothes, he would have attacks. Having taken many sedative and heavy-settling drugs like Zhusha (Cinnabar), Xijiao (Rhinoceros horn - note: banned/substitute used), Longgu (Fossilized mammal bones), Moxiang (Musk), the symptoms persisted after forty days. Additionally, his walking movements and mental state resembled dementia.
I palpated his pulse: deep, wiry, and rapid. The Huangdi Zhenjing (Yellow Emperor's Classic of Acupuncture) states: "Heart pulse full and large indicates epilepsy and tendon spasms." It also says: "Liver pulse small and urgent indicates epilepsy and tendon spasms." Generally, children's blood and qi are not yet settled, their spirit energy is still weak. Due to fright, the spirit has no foundation, and it moves the Liver. The Liver governs tendons, hence epilepsy with tendon spasms. The disease has lasted long, Qi is weak. Children are prone to deficiency-excess patterns. Taking many sedative and cold-cooling medicines further damaged their Qi, thus adding actions resembling dementia. The Neijing states: "Sudden spasms, epilepsy, dizziness, feet unable to support the body, select Tianzhu point." Tianzhu point is where the Foot Taiyang meridian emerges, and the Yang Qiao vessel attaches and travels along it. It also says: "Epilepsy and convulsions, unknown suffering location, governed by the two Qiao vessels, male Yang female Yin." Jiegau states: "Daytime onset treats Yang Qiao Shenmai point; nighttime onset treats Yin Qiao Zhaohai point. First moxa both Qiao vessels 14 times each, then treat with Chenxiang Tianma Tang."
Chenxiang (Aquilaria wood) Yizhi (Alpinia oxyphylla fruit) Chuanwu (Processed Aconitum kusnezoffii root, skin and umbilicus removed. 2 qian each) Tianma (Gastrodia elata rhizome) Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia divaricata root) Banxia (Pinellia ternata, boiled in water) Fuzi (Processed Aconitum carmichaelii lateral root, skin and umbilicus removed. 3 qian each) Qianghuo (Notopterygium incisum rhizome, 5 qian) Gancao (Licorice root, honey-fried) Danggui (Angelica sinensis root) Jiangxie (Ginger scrapings. 1.5 qian each) Duhuo (Angelica pubescens root, 4 qian)
Cut the above ingredients. Take 5 qian per dose, add 3 slices of fresh ginger, decoct in water, take warm. The Juzhong Lun states: "Fear causes Qi to descend, essence becomes timid and Upper Jiao closes." It also says: "For pathogenic Qi rising from below, guide it downwards." Using Qianghuo and Duhuo, bitter-warm, with thin flavors, belonging to Yin within Yang, guides Qi upward. Entering the Taiyang meridian as guiding herbs, they serve as Sovereign herbs. Tianma and Fangfeng, acrid-warm to disperse; Danggui and Gancao, acrid-sweet-warm to tonify deficiency of Qi and Blood, and nourish Stomach Qi, serving as Minister herbs. Hei Fuzi, Chuan Wutou, Yizhiren, great acrid-warm to promote Yang and retreat Yin, also treating Cold invading and injuring the Stomach. Kidney governs the five fluids, entering the Spleen to become saliva/phlegm. Using Shengjiang and Banxia to dry dampness and transform phlegm. The Shiji states: "Heavy can remove timidity. Chenxiang is acrid-warm, heavy in substance, clear in Qi, removes timidity and calms the Spirit, serving as Envoy herb." The flavors and properties combine to raise Yang and tonify Stomach, allowing fearful and timid Qi to naturally settle.

The above six ingredients are first ground into fine powder, then added:) Xionghuang (Realgar, 5 liang) Chensha (Cinnabar, 3 qian) Naozi (Borneol, separately ground, 0.5 liang) Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis, 3 qian)
Shexiang (Musk, 1 qian)
Mix all ingredients uniformly. Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, de-rooted, 2 liang), Jiu (Wine, 1 sheng), decoct Mahuang until reduced to 1 sheng, remove Mahuang, use only the wine. Boil the medicine appropriately, do not burn to red/black. Quickly form pills by multiple hands, size like Chinese quince seed, store in sealed containers. One pill divided into five doses. Decoct Jin Yin Hua (Lonicera japonica flower) and Bohe (Mentha haplocalyx), grind the pill in this decoction to dissolve. Greatly disperses fright pathogens.
Effective Formula for Treating Five Types of Epilepsy
