Qian Yi discussed night crying, stating: It is pain caused by cold in the Spleen organ. One should administer warming middle-jiao medicines and use rituals to exorcise evil spirits; Huahuo Gao (Flower Fire Paste) is indicated for treatment.
Huahuo Gao Take one wick from a lamp, apply it to the nipple or breast milk, and let the infant suckle it.
[Qian's Formula] Danggui Wan (Angelica Sinensis Pill) For infants who cry at night, it is due to cold in the internal organs causing abdominal pain. The presentation includes a bluish complexion, cold hands and feet, and refusal to suckle. This formula is appropriate.
Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Baishao Yao (Radix Paeoniae Alba), Renshen (Radix Ginseng) (each 1 fen), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, honey-fried) (0.5 fen), Jiegeng (Radix Platycodi), Chenjupi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, without the white pith) (each 1 qian).
Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder. Decoct half a qian in water, and administer small amounts frequently. There are also cases of heat-pain causing incessant crying, with onset at night, red face, dry lips, and yellow-red urine. In such cases, Sanhuang Wan (Three Yellows Pill) should be taken with Renshen Tang (Ginseng Decoction). (See Sanhuang Wan formula under Excess-Heat.)
[Zhang Huan's Formula] Wanjing San (Ten Thousand Gold Powder) Treats infant organ-cold, weak congenital qi, or wide fontanelles, with a bluish-white complexion and frequent night crying. Severe cases may present with restlessness and oppression, resembling possession by spirits. This is also attributed to violating taboos and is named Night Crying. This formula is indicated.
Chenxiang (Lignum Aquilariae Resinatum, sliced), Dingxiang (Flos Caryophylli), Renshen (Radix Ginseng), Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis), Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) (each 1 liang), Chishaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra), Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) (each 0.5 liang), Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi) (1 fen).
Pound the above ingredients and sieve them into a fine powder. Administer 1 qian per dose. Use a small cup of warm, diluted fermented rice water, decoct until reduced to 0.5 sheng, allow to cool to warm temperature, and drip into the infant's mouth frequently. Immediate effect is expected.
[Tian's Formula] Wuweizi San (Schisandra Powder) Treats infant night crying and abdominal pain, which worsens at night, resembling spiritual affliction.
Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis), Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Chishaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra), Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) (each 0.5 liang), Fushen (Poria with Hostwood), Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae), Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, honey-fried) (each 2.5 qian).

Dry the first four ingredients by roasting. Do not overheat the Rougui. Grind all together into a fine powder. Wrap Rushiang in leaves, heat thoroughly using a heated ironing tool, let cool, then grind finely with Shexiang in a mortar. Add the previous powder and mix uniformly. Make pills with refined honey, sized like Euryale seeds. Take one to two pills per dose, dissolve in warm water on an empty stomach.
Diaoteng Yin (Uncaria Decoction) Treats infant night crying due to cold in the zang-organs. Yin qi prevails at night, causing cold to move; when cold moves, extreme yin generates restlessness; excess cold causes pain, hence the incessant night crying. Diaoteng San (Uncaria Powder) is indicated. For fright-induced crying, add Chan Tui (Periostracum Cicadae), Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae), and Tianma (Rhizoma Gastrodiae).
