[Xue Ji] Pediatric "Shidu" (Seasonal Toxic Disease) is caused by contracting the abnormal Qi of the four seasons, resulting in redness and swelling of the nose, face, ears, neck, or throat, accompanied by chills, fever, and headache. In severe cases, it may lead to mental confusion and restlessness, throat obstruction, resembling Taiyang disease (a syndrome caused by pathogenic factors affecting the Taiyang meridian). It can be fatal within five to seven days. A floating and rapid pulse indicates the pathogen is at the exterior; a deep and choppy pulse indicates the pathogen is at the interior. For pathogens at the exterior, Gegen Niuziangzi Tang (Kudzu and Burdock Seed Decoction) is used; for pathogens at the interior, Zhizi Ren Tang (Gardenia Seed Decoction) is used; for simultaneous exterior and interior involvement, Xijiao Shengma Tang (Rhinoceros Horn and Cimicifuga Decoction) is used. In severe cases, bloodletting with a bi stone (ancient surgical knife for bleeding) is appropriate, along with Tongqi San (Ventilation Powder) to vent the toxicity, which will naturally resolve in about ten days. If the toxicity does not resolve and suppuration is imminent, Tuoli Xiaodu San (Support the Interior and Eliminate Toxin Powder) is used; if healing and contraction are desired, Tuoli San (Support the Interior Powder) is used. If throat swelling prevents speech or head swelling prevents eating, the prognosis is fatal.
Tongqi San: Treats pain from Shidu and throat discomfort; induces sneezing to vent toxicity.
Ingredients: Yanhusuo (Corydalis Rhizome), Zhu Ya Zao Jia (Toothed Soap Pod), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Rhizome) (each 1 qian), Lilü (Veratrum Rhizome) (0.5 qian), Yangzhizhu Hua (Daphne Odora Flower) (0.3 qian).
Preparation and Administration: Grind into fine powder. Dip a paper twist in a small amount of powder and insert into the nostril to induce sneezing until effective.
Xijiao Shengma Tang: Treats wind-heat causing swelling and pain of the lips, jaw joint, and teeth.
Ingredients: Xijiao (Rhinoceros Horn, sliced) (2 qian), Shengma (Cimicifuga Rhizome), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root), Qianghuo (Notopterygium Rhizome), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Rhizome), Baizhi (Angelica Dahurica Root) (each 0.5 qian), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), Gancao (Licorice Root) (each 1 qian), Baifuzi (Aconitum Carlemanii Bulb) (0.4 qian).
Preparation and Administration: Take 3–5 qian per dose, decoct in water.

Preparation and Administration: Grind into fine powder. Take 2–3 qian per dose, mix with honey water.
Gegen Niuziangzi Tang: Treats swelling and pain from Shidu. Disperses toxin and clears heat.
Ingredients: Gegen (Kudzu Root), Guanzhong (Note: Likely a variant name or error for Jingjie, retained as per text), Gancao (Licorice Root), Jiangxi Douchi (Fermented Soybean from Jiangxi), Niuziangzi (Burdock Fruit, half raw half stir-fried, crushed) (all in equal proportions).
Preparation and Administration: Take 3–5 qian per dose, decoct in water.
[Xue Ji] Pediatric Liuzhu (Flowing Abscess) results from stagnant Qi flow and coagulated Blood injection, representing a syndrome of insufficient Yuan Qi (Primary Qi). Causes include sprains and falls, Liver Fire with rebellious Qi, invasion of the Six Excesses (pathogenic factors), Spleen deficiency with food stagnation, or congenital predisposition. Lesions occur at the joints of the four limbs or in the chest, abdomen, waist, and buttocks, presenting as nodules, diffuse swelling, or pain. All cases should be treated with Cong Yi Fa (Green Onion Moxibustion/Fomentation), prioritizing the consolidation of Yuan Qi. For sprains and falls, Hexue Dingtong Wan (Harmonize Blood and Stop Pain Pill) is used; for Liver Fire, Jiwei Lujian Wan (Nine-Ingredient Aloe Pill) is used; for food stagnation, Siwei Fei'er Wan (Four-Ingredient Child-Nourishing Pill) is used. If the medication matches the syndrome, unformed abscesses will dissipate spontaneously, and formed abscesses will rupture spontaneously. If pus forms but does not rupture, it indicates deficient Yuan Qi; tonify first, then puncture, so that toxin does not attack internally and Qi and Blood do not collapse. If pain persists after pus discharge, it indicates deficient Qi and Blood; Bazen Tang (Eight Treasures Decoction) is used. Vomiting and poor appetite indicate deficient Stomach Qi; Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) is used. Desire to vomit without eating, or abdominal distension, indicates deficient Spleen Qi; Liujunzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) is used. Jaw stiffness and convulsions indicate extreme deficiency of Qi and Blood leading to transformation syndromes; Shiquan Dabu Tang (Complete Great Tonifying Decoction) is used. Internal heat and afternoon fever indicate Yin Blood deficiency; Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) plus Renshen (Ginseng), [missing character, likely Huangqi or Maidong], and Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) are used. Exterior heat and aversion to cold indicate deficient Yang Qi; Shiquan Dabu Tang is used. Heat that comes and goes, or appears by day and hides by night, or vice versa, indicates deficient heat; greatly tonify Yuan Qi. If the area is red, swollen, and pus is thick, it is treatable. If it is not red or hard, pus is thin, pulse is flooding, accompanied by chills, fever, thirst, and inability to tolerate tonification, it is untreatable.
Jianpi Shen Shi Yin: Treats early-stage sores with redness, swelling, and pain; damp-toxin flowing downward; or pain at the Huantiao acupoint.
Ingredients: Renshen (Ginseng), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Cangzhu (Atractylodes Lancea Rhizome), Fangji (Stephania Root, mixed with wine), Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark, stir-fried), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Rhizome), Chenpi (Tangerine Peel), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root), Fuling (Poria) (each 0.5 qian), Mugua (Chaenomeles Fruit, avoid iron), Chaihu Shao (Bupleurum Root tip), Gancao (Licorice Root) (each 0.3 qian).
Preparation and Administration: Decoct in ginger water. If no improvement after 3–5 doses, add a little Gui (Cinnamon Twig) and decoct in wine. Add Niuxi (Achyranthes Root) for dysuria; add Qianghuo (Notopterygium Rhizome) for body pain.
Hexue Dingtong Wan (also known as Hei Wan Zi): Treats Liuzhu, knee wind, or blood stasis from sprains/falls, causing limb and joint swelling and pain; resolves spontaneously upon ingestion. If fever occurs after ulceration, take concurrently with tonics for efficacy.
Ingredients: Baicaoshuang (Soot from Hundred Herbs Burnt), Chi Xiaodou (Red Bean) (half jin), Chuanwu (Aconitum Carleilii Root, processed) (1.5 liang), Bailian (Belamcanda Rhizome) (8 liang), Baiji (Polygonatum Rhizome), Nanxing (Pinellia Tuber, processed) (each 2 liang), Shaoyao (Peony Root), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root), Niuxi (Achyranthes Root) (each 5 liang), Gusuibu (Drynaria Rhizome) (4 liang).
Preparation and Administration: Grind into powder. Make pills using wine paste, size of paulownia seeds. Take 20–30 pills per dose, swallow with plain warm water.
Shenxiao Cong Yi Fa: Treats Liuzhu nodules, bone carbuncles, or crane-knee wind. First apply Ge Suan Jiu (Garlic-Separated Moxibustion); if residual swelling remains, use this fomentation method to promote Qi circulation and Blood flow, dispersing stagnation with rapid effect. Also treats traumatic injuries, effectively stopping pain, dispersing blood stasis, and reducing swelling.
Method: Finely chop green onions, crush, stir-fry until hot, and frequently foment the affected area. Replace when cool. For crane-knee wind, concurrently administer Dafangfeng Tang (Great Saposhnikovia Decoction) for cure.
Ge Suan Jiu Fa: Treats Liuzhu, carbuncles, furuncles, and crane-knee wind. Apply 20–30 moxa cones daily. For painful lesions, moxa until pain ceases; for painless lesions, moxa until pain arises. The toxin disperses with the fire. Fire promotes free flow and draws out stagnant toxin; this is a contrary treatment method with life-saving power.
Method: Peel garlic, slice to the thickness of three cash coins, place on the lesion, and moxa on top of the garlic. After three cones, replace garlic and continue. Unformed abscesses will dissipate; formed ones will have their toxicity suppressed. For large sores, crush garlic, spread on the lesion, lay moxa on top and burn. Replace garlic when burnt. For painless lesions, non-suppurating lesions, non-elevating lesions, or Yin-type sores, moxa heavily. Generally, painless, non-suppurating, non-elevating sores indicate Qi and Blood deficiency and are often untreatable. However, lesions on the head and face should not be moxa heavily. Infant moxibustion methods are described in the Carbuncle section.
Rusheng Bing: Treats Liuzhu and all sores that cannot dissipate, or ulcers that do not contract.
Ingredients: Ruxiang (Olibanum), Moyao (Myrrh), Muxiang (Aucklandia Root), Xuexie (Dragon's Blood), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root) (all in equal proportions), Shexiang (Musk) (half proportion).
Preparation and Administration: Grind into powder. Mix with wine paste to form two cakes, foment while hot. Add Chan Su (Toad Venom) for toxic sores.
Danggui Buxue Tang: Treats Liuzhu and post-ulcer internal heat, facial redness, irritability, and thirst. Pulse is flooding yet empty, vanishing under heavy pressure, indicating Blood deficiency. Misuse of Baihu Tang (White Tiger Decoction) will be fatal. (Formula see Deficient Heat section)
Yiqi Yangrong Tang: Treats Liuzhu due to Qi and Blood deficiency, unable to dissipate; or swelling in limbs and neck, regardless of hardness, color (red/white), pain or no pain; afternoon fever; or ulcers not contracting. (Formula see following section)
Shiquan Dabu Tang: Treats various sores due to Qi and Blood deficiency, unable to dissipate, suppurate, or contract. Or chills, fever, sweating, facial deviation, emaciation, poor appetite. Or afternoon fever, spontaneous or nocturnal sweating. Or morning chills and evening fever, non-contracting sores. (Formula see Spontaneous Sweating section)
