Mu She (Wooden Tongue) refers to the condition where the tongue swells and gradually enlarges until it fills the mouth. If not treated urgently, it can cause suffocation and death. [Zeng] states that Mu She presents with a swollen and stiff tongue that hinders suckling and eating; this is caused by excessive Wind-Heat. One may administer Danggui San (Angelica Decoction), Xiehuang San (Drain Spleen Powder), or Yulu Yin (Jade Dew Drink), followed by applying Xiaohuang San (Drain Yellow Powder) to dot and wipe the tongue surface. The tongue is the conduit of the Heart (Xin). Heart Heat generates sores and rupture; Liver stagnation causes bleeding like a gush; Spleen closure results in a white coating like snow; Heat causes swelling and fullness; Wind causes stiffness and rigidity, preventing the mouth from opening. Accompanying symptoms include high fever in the four limbs, panting, and blocked speech. The treatment method involves cooling and resolving the pathogenic heat in the Upper Jiao and the three meridians of the Heart, Liver, and Spleen, while dispersing Wind and transforming Phlegm. Initially, use Baijie San (Hundred Resolutions Powder) combined with Wuhe Tang (Five Harmonies Decoction), decocted with water, ginger, and Dengxincao (Juncus Effusus Herb). Subsequently, use Niubang Tang (Arctium Decoction) together with Danggui San, added with Shengdihuang (Rehmannia Root Preparata) and ginger, decocted and taken orally. For treatment, one may also use Zi Xue (Purple Snow) two and a half qian from the *Ju Fang* (Prescriptions of the Bureau), mixed with Banhe (half he) of Zhuli (Bamboo Sap), applied frequently into the mouth, which will resolve spontaneously. Alternatively, use Baicaoshuang (Charred Hundred Herbs Ash), Huashi (Talcum), and Mangxiao (Mirabilite), ground into powder, mixed with wine, and applied topically.
Xiehuang San (Spleen) Yulu Yin (Accumulated Heat)
Xiaohuang San Treats Wind-Heat attacking upwards, causing the tongue to become stiff, swollen, and unable to subside.
Fenghua Puxiao (Weathered Mirabilite) Zhen Puhuang (True Lygodii Spora) (each half liang)
Take the above ingredients: dry the Puhuang until dry, grind into powder, and mix finely with Puxiao in a mortar. Use one zi or half a qian each time, dot and wipe the upper and lower surfaces of the tongue.
Baijie San (Acute Convulsion) Wuhe Tang (Blood Loss) Niubang Tang (Throat)
Chuanxiao San Treats pediatric wooden tongue.
Puxiao (One liang) Zhen Zixue (True Purple Snow) (Five qian) Yan Shi (Salt) (Two and a half qian)
Grind the above ingredients into fine powder. Take five fen each time, add two or three drops of Zhuli (Bamboo Sap), mix with warm water, and apply to the tongue. Swallowing saliva is permissible.
[Danxi] stated: If granule-like sores appear on the tongue, apply juice from Sangbaipi (Morus Alba Bark); two or three applications are excellent.
The *Bencao* records treating pediatric sores on the tongue that prevent suckling. Mix Baifan (Alumen) with an egg, place in vinegar, and apply to the sole of the foot; after fourteen days (two sevens), it heals. The *Qianjin Fang* uses equal parts of Fengfang (Vespa Nidus) burnt to ash and dust from room corners, mixed evenly and applied. Another method applies Sangbaipi juice to the nipple for the infant to suck. Another method uses the marrow from Yangti bone (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata? Note: Text says Yangti Gu, likely referring to a specific bone marrow or preparation) mixed with Hufen (Lead White) for application. The *Waitai Duanju* uses Oumeigu (Cuttlefish Bone) burnt to powder, mixed with Ji Zihuang (Egg Yolk), and applied. The *Yingru* burns Kui Gen (Malva Verticillata Root) to ash and applies a small amount daily. The *Zhang Jifeng Fang* uses Ye Qiangwei Gen (Wild Rose Root), chopped finely; take one spoonful, decoct with two cups of water until reduced to six-tenths, strain, and hold hot in the mouth, spitting out when cold. This treats oral and lingual sores that have persisted for a long time without healing.
