Upon birth, the infant's eyes are closed, mouth open, and accompanied by frequent groaning. This is caused by fetal heat (Tai Re). Treatment involves using Tianzhu Huang San (Arum Rhizome Powder, formula see "Double Tongue") to cool the five Zang organs, administered to the mother. Additionally, wash the infant's eyes with decoction prepared from a bamboo tube.
Infants born with closed eyes result from the mother consuming hot or toxic foods during pregnancy. The treatment method is to use a small amount of Bear Gallbladder (Xiong Dan) steamed water to wash the eyes, seven times a day. If the eyes do not open after three days, administer Sheng Dihuang Tang (Rehmannia Decoction), and the lactating mother must also consume Shanyinchen Tang (Artemisia Capillaris Decoction). All newborns must be thoroughly cleaned; if not clean, impure fluids may soak into the eyes, causing redness and ulceration that may persist into adulthood.
[Sheng Dihuang Tang] Treats newborn infants with closed eyes.

Preparation: Grind all ingredients into fine powder. Take a small amount, mix with decoction made from Jiedixin (Herba Dictamni), and apply to the mouth. Administer promptly.
[Sisheng San] Treats infants suffering from fetal heat-toxin, resulting in inability to open both eyes after birth.
Ingredients: Dengxin (Medulla Junci), Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis), Qinpi (Cortex Fraxini), Muzei (Equiseti Herba), Zaozi (Fructus Jujubae), each 0.5 liang.

The term "failure to suckle" refers to the infant's inability to suck milk immediately after birth. When an infant is born and has not yet cried, quickly wipe the mouth with hands to ensure all foul blood is expelled and not swallowed; otherwise, no other illness will occur. If the mouth is not wiped thoroughly, foul matter enters the abdomen, causing abdominal distension, shortness of breath, and inability to suckle. Alternatively, if the mother exposed herself to excessive cold during pregnancy, the fetus may have contracted cold, leading to infant abdominal pain. In such cases, Fuling Wan (Poria Pill) and Muxiang Binglang San (Aucklandia and Areca Nut Powder) are indicated.
[Fuling Wan]
Ingredients: Chi Fuling (Poria cum Ligno), Chuan Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis, remove stamens), Zhike (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, stir-fried).
Preparation: Equal parts. Grind into powder, mix with refined honey to form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take one pill per dose, administered with milk.

Preparation: Crush, sieve, and grind uniformly. Mix with honey to form pills the size of mung beans. Swallow three pills with warm water, four to five times daily.
[Moxibustion Method] For infants within fourteen days of birth who do not suckle and cry excessively due to external wind invading the umbilicus and flowing to the Heart and Spleen: Moxibustion should be applied to Chengjiang (CV24), located in the depression below the lower lip border. Next, moxa on Jiache (ST6), located behind the mandible below the ear. Use moxa cones the size of sparrow droppings, seven moxa cones per acupoint. This condition cannot be treated without moxibustion. If the infant has rattling sounds in the throat and difficulty swallowing milk, apply three moxa cones to Xuanji (an extra point), located in the depression one cun below Tiantu (CV22).
