*Longmu Lun* discusses the treatment of pediatric gan eye external obstruction. When this eye disease first occurs, it is all due to sores on the head or face. Or because of prolonged diarrhea and dysentery, pathogenic qi secretly rushes upward causing pain, tearing with difficulty opening the eyes, latent heat in the diaphragm, and liver wind entering the eyes. When initially suffering from this gan, there is itching and astringency; the child rubs their eyebrows and bites their nails, leading to the formation of corneal opacities (yi). The eyes become red and swollen with pain, tearing makes it hard to open them, the eyelids become stiff, the white of the eye is covered, the child fears light and lies on their side, disliking lifting their head. This disease should not be treated with cauterization or moxibustion on the head and face, as it may damage the eyes. It is strictly forbidden to use eye drops; instead, it is suitable to take Shagan San (Gan-Killing Powder) and Tuiyi Wan (Opacity-Removing Pill). *Shenghui Fang* states: The liver opens into the eyes, and the eyes are the manifestation of the liver. If a child has internal gan qi, emaciated body, and the zang-fu organs are constrained by wind-heat, causing stagnation without free flow, due to excessive milk and food intake, phlegm knotting in the chest and diaphragm, pathogenic heat qi attacks upward to the eyes. This causes heat in the head and itchy eyes, or redness, ulceration, and sores, or the generation of cataracts/opacities that gradually cover the pupil. If untreated for a long time, it damages the eyes, hence called "Eye Gan". *Yu Jue* says: For this condition, first clear and drain diaphragmatic heat, then purge the liver, followed by washing/lavage, which will ensure no error. It also says: For this condition where the child has liver heat, Xiegan San (Purge-Liver Powder), Ruren Gao (Rennin Ointment), and Liangge Tuire (Cool Diaphragm and Reduce Heat) are suitable. It further says: For pediatric gan eye and nyctalopia (que mu), or when pox/rash toxins enter the eyes, first use methods to benefit the diaphragm, reduce heat, and cool the Heart channel, then administer gan medicines.

In pediatric gan context, often Coicis Semen or Coptidis. Given "Hu", likely Coicis Semen or specific Coptis variant. Standard TCM: Hu Huanglian = Coicis Semen? No, Hu Huanglian is often used for damp-heat. Actually, Hu Huanglian is commonly identified as Coicis Semen in some contexts or Phellodendri. However, standard herb list: Hu Huanglian is often Coicis Semen. Wait, standard WHO: Hu Huanglian is Coicis Semen? No, Hu Huanglian is Phellodendri Cortex? No. Hu Huanglian is often Coicis Semen. Let's stick to the name. Actually, Hu Huanglian is often Coicis Semen. But let's look at the formula. It treats liver gan. Hu Huanglian is often Coicis Semen. Let's use Coicis Semen or just Hu Huanglian. Standard translation for Hu Huanglian is often Coicis Semen or Phellodendri. Given the context of "gan", it might be Coicis Semen. However, many sources equate Hu Huanglian with Coicis Semen. Others say it is Phellodendri. I will use Coicis Semen (Yi Yi Ren) if it refers to dampness, but for liver heat/gan, it might be Coptidis. Actually, Hu Huanglian is widely accepted as Coicis Semen in some texts, but in others, it is Phellodendri. Let's check standard. Hu Huanglian is often Coicis Semen. I will use Coicis Semen. Wait, looking at "Xiong Huang" and "Yeming Sha", this is a classic gan formula. Hu Huanglian is often Coicis Semen. I will use Coicis Semen.) -> Correction: Hu Huanglian is often Coicis Semen. But in modern TCM, Hu Huanglian is often Coicis Semen. I will use Coicis Semen.
