According to *Chao Shi Bing Yuan · Pediatric Gu Poison Dysentery Syndrome*: When the seasonal cold and heat are disordered, and there is a toxic epidemic qi, children who are inadequately clothed may be injured by it. The pathogen contends with blood and qi, entering the intestines and stomach, where toxic vapors accumulate. If the large intestine is deficient, this transforms into bloody dysentery. The appearance of the dysentery is characterized by blood that is stagnant and瘀 (stasis-like), resembling slices of chicken or duck liver, discharged with the stool. This occurs because the toxic vapor is excessively hot and invades the internal organs; the condition resembles being poisoned by gu (a mythical venomous creature or poison), hence it is called "Gu Poison Dysentery."
The song in *Shi Bi Jing* regarding Spleen Toxic Dysentery states: "There is poison in the spleen called Pure Yang, originally caused by physicians' use of hot medicines injuring the body, leading to frequent constipation and dryness in the large intestine, with many drops of blood in the withered intestines. Like wind closing the abdomen, making it hard to open the eyes; body heat, warm head, but cooling feet; red tongue and high chest are signs of this syndrome. Frequent crying, panting, urgency, and even madness occur. One must first resolve heat and open the stomach; this is the good medicine of a wise physician." This refers to heat accumulation in the spleen; if untreated, latent poison remains. Treatment should cool the spleen first, then remove the accumulation. If the bones at the chest suddenly protrude and are accompanied by panting and urgency, it is incurable.
The song in *Feng Sui Jing* is the same, with notes stating: It is suitable to use Jinhua San (for excess-heat patterns) and Xianglian Wan (which is Ji's Xianglian Wan mentioned in the previous section).
The song in *Xing Zheng Lun* regarding Wind Toxic Dysentery states: "Among the eight types of dysentery, wind dysentery is difficult to treat. The form is like green grass juice in various ways; toxic wind and bean-juice add to the evil heat. With stomach failure, pieces complete like chicken liver appear. For red dysentery, do not first purge the accumulation; for closed eyelids and loss of appetite, the condition is unbearable. If it returns to white dysentery, one must later purge; frequently warming the zang-fu organs retrieves the source."
