Belongs to Shaoyang Ministerial Fire (Shàoyáng Xiànghuǒ). The classics state: "When Shaoyang Ministerial Fire prevails, there is ear pain." Treatment should employ acrid-cold substances. Formulas such as Shengxi Wan (Raw Rhinoceros Horn Pill), Xijiao Yinzi (Rhinoceros Horn Decoction), and Jiierer Yinzi (Heat-Resolving Decoction) may be used. If there is pain and ulceration within the ear, use Shunianzi Tang (Arctii Fructus Decoction). For dampness, swelling, and pain in the ear, administer Liangge San (Cooling the Diaphragm Powder) with Da Huang (Rhubarb Root and Rhizome) stir-fried with wine, Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root) soaked in wine, Jingjie (Schizonepeta Spike), and Qianghuo (Notopterygium Rhizome and Root). Additionally, apply a mixture of more Borneolum Syntheticum (Bingpian, 冰片) and less Moschus (Shexiang, 麝香); if dampness is heavy, add Calcitum (Gufan, 枯矾), and insufflate into the ear. *Danqian Xulu* records: Wang Wanli suffered from ear pain at that time. Wei Wenjing advised him to take Qingyan (Green Salt), Lurong (Deer Antler without Bone), Xionghuang (Realgar), and Fuzi (Aconite Lateralis Radix Praeparata) decocted into a pill. He stated that these medicines were not taken for the sovereign's deficiency, but asked why one did not consult the *I Ching*: Kan (Water) corresponds to ear pain. Kan represents Water; the Kidney stores essence and opens into the ears. In emotions, Water corresponds to Fear; fear injures the Kidney, thus causing ear pain. Qi, being Yang, moves and manifests constantly; Blood, being Yin, circulates and remains hidden. Blood resides in the form, just as water exists between heaven and earth; therefore, Kan is the hexagram of Blood. This pathology is already documented in the meridians. Ultimately, he took the medicine and recovered well. External treatments include Bailong San (White Dragon Powder), Xingren Gao (Apricot Seed Ointment), and Changpu Tingzi (Acorus Stick). Alternatively, use two pieces of Pangolin Scales (Chanshunjia, 穿山甲) and two ground beetles (Tougouzi, 土狗子), sandwich them together, and stir-fry until scorched black. Add a small amount of Moschus (Shexiang, 麝香), grind finely, and insufflate an amount equivalent to one character (a traditional measure) into the ear. (This also treats deafness.) Alternatively, carve Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix (Caowu, 草乌) into the size of a jujube pit, dip it in ginger juice, and insert it into the ear. (Another method does not use ginger juice.) Alternatively, grind Curcumae Zedoariae Rhizoma (Yujin, 郁金) into fine powder. Each time, mix one character's worth with clean water, pour into the ear, and immediately tilt it out. Alternatively, use oil walnut kernel powder mixed with Dog Gallbladder (Goudan, 狗胆汁) to form pills the size of paulownia seeds, wrap in cotton, and place in the ear. Alternatively, stir-fry common salt until hot, steam it with jujube paste, wrap in blue-and-white porcelain-patterned cloth, and use as a pillow.
Shen Kuo said: When I served as the Inspector of Hebei, I suffered from red eyes for over forty days. The area beside the cornea became dark red and formed ulcers, causing day and night pain, which resisted all treatments. Official Qiu Ge asked me, "With your eyes in this condition, do you have itching in your ears? If your ears itch, it is 'Kidney Wind' (Shenfeng, 肾风). Si Sheng San (Four Raw Substances Powder) treats Kidney Wind. Taking two or three doses usually cures it. It is known among the people as Sheng Sanzi (Holy Particle Powder)." I transmitted his formula and took it combined with my own regimen. One dose at noon, one dose before bed. My eyes suddenly hurt severely, and I could only sleep after the second watch. Upon waking, the redness had dispersed slightly, and the pain ceased. After taking three or four more doses, I returned to normal health. At that time, Academician Sun Hefu was governing Zhenyang. Hearing my account, he rejoiced greatly, saying, "Now I know how to treat my eye disease myself." Previously, when suffering from chronic eye disease, I heard Censor Lü Jifu say that his long-standing eye ailment was cured by taking Toubing Dan (Ice-Penetrating Pill). Following his advice, I prepared one batch of Toubing Dan (Ice-Penetrating Pill) and took twenty or thirty doses, after which my eyes healed. Thus, I realized that Toubing Dan (Ice-Penetrating Pill) also treats Kidney Wind (Shenfeng, 肾风). *Taiping Shenghui Fang* records: Someone suffered from ear itching, occurring once a day, which was terrifying. Only after picking until bleeding did it improve slightly. This is due to Kidney deficiency causing floating toxins to attack upward, which is difficult to treat with conventional methods. It is appropriate to take Toubing Dan (Ice-Penetrating Pill). Avoid alcohol, wet noodles, vegetables, chicken, pork, etc. Adhering to this diet for a month is ideal; failure to abstain renders the treatment ineffective.
