(The zygomatic bone, commonly known as the cheekbone). It is the intersection of the Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian, Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian, and Hand-Taiyang Small Intestine Meridian, and also belongs to the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian.
The *Ling Shu* states: "Patients with heart disease have redness on the zygomatic bones." Qiao Yue stated: "When heart Qi fails, deficient Yang floats upward, causing the face to appear red like grease." (Commentary: "Like grease" refers to a woman applying powder to her face and rouge to her cheekbones. White is the sign of the Lung, and red is the sign of the Heart. The *Fa Ming* considers this Fire overcoming Metal, which comes from the element that overcomes me, termed a "robber pathogen" (Ze Xie); such diseases are difficult to cure. Thus, the *Mai Jue* says: "A face red as if made up indicates life will not last long.") It also belongs to the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian. The *Ling Shu* states: "Patients with kidney disease have blackness on the cheekbones and forehead."
Cheek (referring to the sides of the face). It is the intersection of the Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian, Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian, Hand-Taiyang Small Intestine Meridian, and Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. The *Su Wen* states: "When the color of the Shaoyang meridian appears on the front of the cheek, it indicates heat disease." The commentary notes: The area of the Foot-Shaoyang is the cheek; 'color' refers to redness; 'front' should be corrected to 'sinew' according to the *Jia Yi Jing*. The *Ling Shu* states: "When pathogenic factors strike the cheek, they affect the lower Shaoyang." It further states: "When Shaoyang Qi arrives, one bites the cheek." The *Su Wen* also states: "In Shaoyang Jue syndrome, there is sudden deafness, swelling, and heat in the cheeks." It further states: "Upper Earth refers to the arteries of both cheeks." The commentary notes: Located on both sides below the nostrils, near the region of the Juliao (ST3) acupoint, where pulsation corresponds to the flow of Qi in the Hand and Foot Yangming meridians. Juliao (ST3) is directly opposite the pupils of the eyes. It also belongs to the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian. The *Su Wen* states: "When Liver Qi rebels upward, the cheeks swell."
In pediatric facial diagnosis, the left cheek belongs to the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian. The *Su Wen* states: "In patients with liver heat disease, the left cheek turns red first." The right cheek belongs to the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian. The *Su Wen* states: "In patients with lung heat disease, the right cheek turns red first."
Cheek side (meaning barrier/fence). It is the intersection of the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian and Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. Chin/Yi (originally written as Chen G, referring to the center of the chin). It belongs to the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. The *Su Wen* states: "When Yangming is deficient, there is chills and trembling of the jaw, eventually leading to mouth and eye deviation and jaw movement abnormalities." The commentary notes: "Mouth and ear movements" refer to blinking of the eyes and trembling of the jaw. It also belongs to the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian. The *Su Wen* states: "In patients with kidney heat disease, the chin turns red first." Xia Yi (referring to the area near the angle of the mandible) belongs to the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. The *Su Wen* states: "For conditions where pathology rushes upward to the throat, treat the initial stage; the initial stage is the meridian that runs along the chin." The commentary notes: The Yangming meridian's Qi gradually ascends to the chin and circles the lips, hence the term 'Xia Yi' as 'Jian', which is the Daying (ST5) acupoint, located 1.3 cun below the mandibular angle, in the bony depression at the arterial pulse.
The *Nei Jing* proposes three methods for treating facial and cheek swelling and pain:
First, select the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian. The classic states: "For cheek pain, puncture the curved Zhou artery of the Foot-Yangming until blood appears, and it will heal immediately. If not healed, press the Renying (ST9) point on the meridian, and it will heal immediately." It further states: "For Jue syndrome with chest fullness and whole-face swelling, moist lips dribbling saliva, sudden difficulty speaking, or severe inability to speak, treat using the Foot-Yangming meridian." It further states: "For Jue headache, where the face looks swollen and there is vexation, treat the Foot-Yangming and Foot-Taiyin meridians to relieve vexation." It further states: "For cheek pain, puncture the Hand-Yangming meridian and the full vessels at the Jiache (ST6) acupoint to release blood."
Second, select the Hand-Taiyang Small Intestine Meridian. The classic states: "When the Hand-Taiyang meridian is disturbed, there is swelling of the jaw making it impossible to look back. Diseases generated by this meridian include yellow eyes and cheek pain. Select points based on excess, deficiency, heat, cold, or sinking."
Third, select the Hand and Foot Shaoyang meridians. The classic states: "Diseases generated by the Sanjiao Hand-Shaoyang meridian include cheek pain." It further states: "Diseases generated by the Gallbladder Foot-Shaoyang meridian include jaw swelling. Select points based on excess, deficiency, heat, cold, or sinking." It further states: "When Liver Qi rebels upward, there is headache, deafness, and cheek pain; take blood [from the collateral vessels]. This generally refers to taking blood from the Foot-Shaoyang collaterals."
Danxi treated Nurse Zhu, who had hot swelling in both cheeks, caused by stagnation in the diaphragm. He used Ge Gen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix) each 1.5 qian, Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) 1 qian, Su Ye (Perillae Folium) 1.5 qian, Zhi Gan Cao (Prepared Licorice Root) 0.7 qian, Bo He (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) 1 qian, and one slice of Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Recens Rhizoma), decocted in water and taken orally.
Dongyuan stated: For sore throat and jaw swelling with a surging pulse and red face, use Qiang Huo Sheng Shi Tang (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix Decoction to Overcome Dampness), adding Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix), and Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) each 0.5 qian.
If there is tinnitus, yellow eyes, cheek and jaw swelling, pain along the outer posterior aspect of the neck, shoulder, nu (upper arm), elbow, and arm, red face, and surging pulse, use Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), and Gao Ben (Ligustici Rhizoma et Radix) to unblock meridian blood, add Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) and Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma) to reduce swelling, and add Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) and Huang Qi (Astragali Radix) to tonify Yuan Qi and drain fire pathogenic factors.
For swelling of both cheeks, mix Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) and Cao Wu (Aconiti Radix Preparata) in equal parts into powder, add Bang Fen (Concha Margaritifera Interior), and apply mixed with pig fat to the swollen area. Alternatively, mixing Chi Xiao Dou (Vigna umbellata Seed) powder with vinegar for application is also excellent. Holding a white plum in the mouth near the cheek for a long time causes swelling to recede and salivation to increase, resolving the condition. When reducing swelling, it must first move downward. For mumps (Zhui Sai), use Bai Ye (Cupressi Cacumen), Che Qian Cao (Plantaginis Herba), and Bai Zi Ren (Biota Semen) crushed and applied hot to the affected area. Alternatively, mix Chi Xiao Dou (Vigna umbellata Seed) powder with egg white (Ji Zi Qing). (See detailed discussion in Surgery Department).
Mr. Chen from Pingjiang, after experiencing fright and fear, frequently scratched his cheeks with fingernails, causing damage to the skin. He felt internal restlessness and irritability, with a rapid and excess pulse. Various medicines failed. Using Niu Huang Qing Xin Liang Ge Wan (Calculus Bovis Clear Heart and Cool Diaphragm Pill) from *Huo You Kou Yi*, he recovered after several doses.
The *San Yin Fang* records: For any case of jaw dislocation due to yawning, where the mouth opens but cannot close, give wine to induce deep intoxication. While sleeping, blow Sao Jiao Mo (Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus Powder) into the nose. Once sneezing occurs thoroughly, the joint will spontaneously reduce.
