When a carbuncle or furuncle (Yongju, 痈疽) initially presents with a small white head, it should be treated immediately by applying ointment to the lesion. If the pathogenic toxin is mild, it will resolve spontaneously; if severe, it will exude fluid, and in extreme cases, discharge black fluid before healing. Even in the most severe instances where the swelling does not fully dissipate, the toxicity is significantly reduced.
Sha Gao (Nahsha Ointment): Treats carbuncles, furuncles, swelling, and toxins; also used for treating scrofula (Luoli, 瘰疬) and removing moles.
Ingredients: Nahsha (Sal Ammoniac, Naohua, 硇砂, raw, 1 qian), Stone Mine Ash (Shikuanghui, 石矿灰, 1 liang, stir-fried until yellow), Bai Dingxiang (White Dingo, 白丁香, i.e., sparrow droppings, 3 qian, stir-fried until yellow), Huangdan (Lead Monoxide, 黄丹, 8 liang, raw), Alkali (Jian, 碱, 1 jin, leached with five bowls of water).
Preparation and Usage: Grind the first four ingredients into an extremely fine powder. Then, boil the alkali water down to one bowl. Before it solidifies into a paste and before adding the powder, mix the powder evenly with the alkali water and store in a porcelain vessel. Apply this ointment to all toxic lesions. For Bai Dingxiang, select hard, sharp sparrow droppings; discard soft, decayed ones.
Liuhui Gao (Six-ash Ointment): Treats back carbuncles (Fabei, 发背), ding sores (Dingchuang, 疔疮), boils (Jiezi, 疖子), swelling and toxins, malignant ulcers, hemorrhoids, moles, and skin tags. Its efficacy is identical to that of Sha Gao.
Ingredients: Ash from Chenopodium album (Hui Xian, 灰苋), Mulberry wood (Sangmu, 桑木), Jujube wood (Zaomu, 枣木), Buckwheat stalks (Yangmai liao, 养麦料), Solanaceae stems/leaves (Qieke, 茄科) [each burned to ash], Stone Mine Ash (Shikuanghui, 石矿灰, finely ground).
Preparation and Usage: The proportions of the above ingredients are flexible. Mix them evenly, soak in hot water, and leach. Collect the leachate and boil it down into a paste-like ointment. Store in a porcelain vessel. Apply to all toxic lesions. When treating ulcers or hemorrhoids, apply repeatedly after some necrotic tissue has sloughed off, continuing until the lesion is gradually cleared.
Yuansheng Gao (Yuansheng Ointment): Treats various malignant ulcers and early-stage scrofula or rat-chancres (Shuchuang, 鼠疮); healing occurs once the lesion is punctured by the ointment.
Ingredients: Dragon's Blood (Xuejie, 血竭, 1 qian), Toad Venom (Chansu, 蟾酥, 3 qian), Calomel (Qingfen, 轻粉, 3 qian), Musk (Shexiang, 麝香, 5 fen), Realgar (Xionghuang, 雄黄, 5 qian), Frankincense (Ruxiang, 乳香, 1 qian), Myrrh (Moyao, 没药, 1 qian). All ingredients must be ground into an extremely fine powder.
Preparation and Usage: Take one dou three sheng of buckwheat straw ash or pure charcoal ash, and leach with water to obtain eight to nine bowls of ash liquor. Boil using chestnut wood or mulberry wood, alternating between moderate and high heat, until reduced to three bowls. Reserve one bowl; place the remaining two bowls in a fine porcelain container. When warm, add the powdered medicines to the ash liquor and stir clockwise with an iron ladle or mulberry/willow branch. Add one sheng of fine refined alum (Duanshi, 锻石) to the medicinal ash liquor, stir well, remove, and let cool overnight. Store in a small white porcelain jar. For any malignant ulcer, apply directly to the center of the head twice daily, and again the next day. The goal is for the ulcer head to erode and release approximately five fen of blood and fluid. If the ointment dries out over time, use the reserved ash liquor to reconstitute it.
