Lüfan San (Green Vitriol Powder): Treats sores caused by bamboo or grass thorns, characterized by swelling and pain. Although no bleeding occurred at the time of injury, toxic vapors have fully penetrated the body, causing unceasing pain and restlessness during sleep. Initially, the wound appears purple, red, or black, with the skin raised three to five layers higher than the surrounding tissue.
Formula: Lüfan (Halloysitum Viride, 绿矾) (half tael, soaked in hot urine, removed when cool, and dried in the sun), Danshen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 丹参) (two qian and a half), Shexiang (Moschus, 麝香) (one zi), Madouling Gen (Aristolochiae Radix, 马兜铃根) (one qian and a half).
Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder. Clean the wound with Jiangshui (fermented grain water), apply the powder, and cover it for immediate effect.
Another Prescription: Treats foreign bodies such as needles, spines, bamboo, or wood embedded in the flesh that have not been expelled after many days, causing pain.
Formula: Longkui Gen (Solanum lyratum Root, 龙葵根) (one handful, washed, using only the bark), Renshen (Ginseng Radix, 人参) (one tael, both ground into powder), Cu (Vinegar, 醋) (a little), December Pig Fat (Su Zhi, 猪脂) (one tael).
Mix the above ingredients and pound them until uniform. Apply a small amount to the sore; the thorn will be expelled naturally.
Prescription for sudden thorn injuries to hands and feet complicated by water toxicity:
Formula: Jiu (Allium tuberosum, 韭), Lanqing (Indigofera tinctoria Leaf, 蓝靛青).
Pound these ingredients and apply to the wound. Heat thoroughly with fire, and recovery will follow.
Another Prescription:
Chew Douchi (Fermented Soybean, 豆豉) and apply an unspecified amount to the affected area for good results. When treating injuries from "Fox Urine Thorn" (a toxic plant thorn), observe whether hairs are present in the Douchi; if none are found, reapply.
Method for expelling stubborn bamboo thorns:
Mash Bi Ma (Ricini Semen, 蓖麻) thoroughly, line the injured area with silk gauze, then apply the medicine. Monitor frequently; if the thorn begins to emerge, pull it out. This prevents the strong medicinal action from pushing healthy flesh outward. In another method, do not use silk lining.
Niubang Ye San (Arctii Leaf Powder): Treats all injuries caused by metal, wood, or bamboo.
Use Niubang Ye (Arctii Lappa Leaf, 牛蒡叶) and E Shi (Arctii Fructus, 恶实), harvested in the sixth or seventh lunar month, air-dried, and ground into powder. Sprinkle the dry powder directly onto the wound; avoid contact with other medicines. If flies lay eggs in the wound during summer months, resulting in maggots, or if muscle healing forms cavities, grind Xing Ren (Pruni Armeniaci Semen Amarum, 杏仁) into a paste, roll it into strips by hand, insert them into the cavity, and the maggots will exit naturally.
Treatment for pain and swelling due to wind and water invasion following a thorn injury:
Burn Li Yu Mu (Cyprinus Carpio Eye, 鲤鱼目) to ash, grind finely, and apply to the affected area. Healing occurs once fluid exudes. Eyes from any fish may be used, but those from Bai Yu (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix, 鲢鱼) are particularly effective.
Song Zhi Fang (Pine Resin Formula): Treats pain and oppression caused by thorns embedded in the flesh when other treatments fail.
Apply Song Zhi (Pini Resina, 松脂) to the wound and wrap with cloth for three to five days. The root of the thorn will eventually emerge without pain or itching, falling off spontaneously. This is highly effective.
Prescription for needles embedded in flesh:
Scrape Jing Jia (Unprocessed Human Nail, 指甲末) and mix with Suan Zao Ren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen, 酸枣仁), pounding them into a paste. Mix with saliva and apply to the site; the needle will be expelled the next day. Another method involves burning Suan Zao He (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen Core, 酸枣核) into powder and ingesting it.
Another Prescription: Treats thorns from male black chickens embedded in flesh, as well as bamboo or wooden splinters.
Take fourteen tail feathers from a black chicken (Wu Ji Wei Ling, 乌鸡尾翎), burn them to ash, and mix with human breast milk (Nan Ru, 男乳). Apply to seal the wound; the thorn will be expelled.
Gui La Wan (Cinnamon and Beeswax Pills): Treats malignant thorns embedded in flesh.
Remove the coarse bark from Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus, 桂枝), grind into powder, and melt Huang La (Beeswax, 黄蜡) to form pills. Insert a pill sized according to the condition into the wound. Cover with three to five layers of wet paper and apply gentle heat until the pill melts into the flesh, causing the thorn to self-expel. Recovery is faster even in cases without embedded thorns.
[Jing] For any bamboo or wood thorns embedded in flesh, mash Qi Lao (Silkworm Moth Larva, 蛴螬) and apply; expulsion is immediate. Another method: mash Bai Mao Gen (Imperatae Rhizoma, 白茅根) and apply; expulsion is immediate. Another method: chew Niu Xi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, 牛膝根) and apply; expulsion follows.
[Jian] For deep bamboo or wood thorns that cannot be expelled: Mash W Yang Fen (Capra Hircus Feces, 乌羊粪), mix with water, and apply thickly to the injury. A servant once had a thorn deeply embedded in his sole, causing excruciating pain. After applying this remedy at dusk, the thorn was expelled by the fourth watch, bringing relief.
[Shan] For reed thorns embedded in flesh: Chew Li Zi (Castanea Sativa, 栗子) residue finely and apply to the wound. For lingering pain after bamboo or wood thorns have been removed: Apply Lou Gu (Asiatic Mole, 蝼蛄); this is excellent.
[Jian] For needles embedded in flesh: Mash Lou Gu Nao (Asiatic Mole Brain, 蝼蛄脑子), mix with Liu Huang (Sulfur, 硫黄) into a fine powder, apply, and secure with paper flowers. When itching is felt, the needle will self-expel.
[Luo] Shensheng Gao (Divine Ointment): For extracting needles accidentally entered into the skin. Use Che Zhi (Cartis Resina, 车脂) to make an ointment, spread on paper like a coin size. Change every two days; after three to five applications, the needle will self-expel.
Another method for extracting needles: Roast three to five Crow Feathers (Wu Ya Ling, 乌鸦翎) until yellow-brown, grind into fine powder, and mix with good vinegar to form a paste. Apply to the wound, cover with paper for one to two hours; effective upon needle expulsion.
[Jian] For needles embedded in flesh: Mash Shuang Ren Xing Ren (Double-kernel Apricot Seed, 双仁杏仁), mix with Che Zhi, and apply to the wound; the needle will self-expel.
[Shi] For pain persisting after a Xiuzhen (秀针) needle was removed from the foot: Apply Huang Ni (Yellow Clay, 黄泥).
[Jian] For children with bones or fish bones embedded in flesh: Boil Bai Mei Rou (White Plum Flesh, 白梅肉), mash, mix with Xiang Ya Mo (Elephant Tusk Powder, 象牙末), and apply thickly to the bone thorn site; the bone will soften and be expelled.
[Tu] Raw Xiang Ya (Elephant Tusk, 生象牙) treats various objects embedded in flesh. Scrape shavings, grind finely, mix with water, and apply to the wound; the object will immediately emerge. If a thorn is stuck in the throat, drink the mixture mixed with water; shavings from old elephant combs are especially good.
[Meng] For fish bones embedded in flesh: Chew Wu Zhu Yu (Evodiae Fructus, 吴茱萸) and apply; the bone will rot and be expelled.
[Dan] Divine Prescription for Wind from Broken Skin (Po Shang Feng, 破伤风), Blood Stasis (Xue Ning Xin, 血凝心), and Migrating Needles in Flesh: Burn Crow Feathers (Wu Ya Ling, 乌鸦翎) to ash while retaining their nature, grind finely, mix with one qian of water, and ingest.
