Zhu Danxi said: For pain from beating injuries, apply Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri), Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata), and Zijingpi (Cortex Lauri Tsangii). These are essential herbs. However, if the pain is due to blood-heat, first use cooling herbs to remove blood stasis. It is necessary to administer Jiming San or similar formulas.
Another Formula: Apply Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata) and Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri) mixed with tongbian (Child's Urine). Alternatively, add jiujiang (Juice of Allium tuberosum). If the skin is unbroken, crush jiucui (Allium tuberosum) and congto (Scallion bulb) and apply. Replace when cool. For plasters, use Zijingpi (Cortex Lauri Tsangii), Ruxiang (Frankincense), Moyao (Myrrh), Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata), Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei), Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri), etc.
Another Formula: Place mu'er (Auricularia auricula-judae) in a wooden spoon, soak in boiling water until soft, stir to drain water, then grind finely in a mortar. Apply to the wound.
Another Formula: Use Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) and Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri) as powder. Mix with juice of Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata) and apply. Reapply if dry.
Another Formula: Use tender roots of Ye Zhu (Boehmeria nivea var. angustifolia). Amount unspecified. Wash clean, grind with salt, and apply to the wound. Effect is miraculous. Use more salt for severe injuries.

Ingredients: Xiangyou (Sesame Oil, 4 liang, authentic preferred. First fry Chuanshanjia (Squama Manis) and Baizhi (Ramulus Platycladi) in oil for a few boils, remove dregs. Filter hot oil through thin cotton. Return oil to pot, boil, then add subsequent drugs. Winter use 5 liang oil); Chuanshanjia (Squama Manis, 1 piece); Baizhi (Ramulus Platycladi, 1 branch - note: only oil/juice extracted, dregs discarded, method see above); Huaizhi (Ramulus Sophorae, 1 stem, split into small strips, not from large trees, used for frequent stirring during oil frying); Fudan (Refined Litharge, washed clean, fine powder 1 liang, added in two portions); Shuihua Zhu (Refined Cinnabar, washed clean, dried, fine powder 2 qian); Xuejie (Sanguis Draconis); Moyao (Myrrh); Ruxiang (Frankincense); Haiercha (Catechu) (each 3 qian, crushed and mixed, fried in copper pot over charcoal until boiling, ground to fine powder); Xin Zhenzhu (New Pearl); Xin Hong Xiangya (New Red Ivory) (each wrapped in bread, burned to retain nature, ground to fine powder; old/oily ones not used); Mianfen (Flour, burned yellow on charcoal, each 1 qian); Ren Zhijia (Human Nail, fried yellow); Sanqi (Radix Notoginseng, dried, fine powder); Shiru (Stalactite, fried in copper pot, fine powder); Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis, fine powder); Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae, fine powder) (each 3 fen); Haipiaoxiao (Endoconcha Sepiae, 5 fen, fine powder); Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae, 10 large pieces, fine powder). Note: The above sixteen items are sifted through an ultra-fine sieve, mixed, divided into five parts. Reserve one part to adjust consistency. Use four parts for four additions (method below). Zhangbing (Borneol, fine powder, 4 qian); Huangla (Yellow Beeswax, 2 qian); Bingpian (Borneol, 1 fen); Shexiang (Moschus, 3 fen); Awei (Asafoetida, block, 5 fen). Note: The above four items are added only after all other drugs are in, just before removing from heat. Stir thoroughly, remove Asafoetida dregs.
Preparation: Divide fine powders into five parts. Add four parts sequentially as described. Reserve one part to adjust thickness. If too thin after four parts, gradually add reserved part. If correct, reserve for dusting on site during application.
Decoction Method: Use 4 liang high-quality sesame oil in a copper pot over charcoal fire. Boil. Add Baizhi (Ramulus Platycladi) and Chuanshanjia (Squama Manis). Boil a few times, remove dregs. Filter hot oil through thin cotton paper. Clean pot. Return oil to pot, boil. Add 5 qian Fudan (Refined Litharge). Stir rapidly with Sophora twig until plaster forms. After 6-7 boils, rinse mouth with clear water, spray a little water into the pot, and remove from heat.
First Removal: Gradually add one part of the fine powder mixture, stirring rapidly as before. Once mixed, test drop in water. Do not wait for pearl formation. Return to fire, stir rapidly, boil, and remove.
Second Removal: Gradually add another part of fine powder, stir rapidly. Mix evenly. Drop test should form pearls. Return to fire, stir rapidly, boil, and remove.
Third Removal: Gradually add next part, stir as before. Mix evenly. Drop test forms pearls but still sticks to hand. Return to fire as before.
Fourth Removal: Gradually add next part, stir rapidly. Mix evenly. Drop test forms pearls, almost non-sticky. Return to fire, boil, and remove.
Fifth Removal: Add 2 qian Huangla (Yellow Beeswax) and 5 qian Fudan (Refined Litharge). Stir rapidly. Drop test must be non-sticky. Do not overcook. If sticky, gradually add reserved powder until non-sticky. Once non-sticky, add 2 qian Shuihua Zhu (Refined Cinnabar), then 4 qian Zhangbing (Borneol). Stir rapidly. Then add 3 fen Shexiang (Moschus), 5 fen Aw ei (Asafoetida), 1 fen Bingpian (Borneol). Stir continuously. Remove Asafoetida dregs. Put ointment in porcelain, soak in cold water until solidified. Find a sunny, clean outdoor spot, dig a pit, invert the porcelain jar in the pit, cover with soil. Wait seven days before retrieving.
Storage: Seal bottle mouth with oiled paper and bamboo leaves to prevent leakage.
Application: Use filtered boiled oil. Spread on single paper without heating. Place hot water container underneath, put oiled paper on top, spread ointment. Do not make too thick; visibility through paper is ideal. If spreading on silk, melt ointment with hot water and spread.
Before Application: Decoct Radish Juice and Mulberry Leaves. Dew-expose overnight. Wash wound with this decoction before applying.
Post-Application: Wash once daily. Do not change plaster. After 2-3 days, when blood disperses and wind-pathogen leaves, switch to the Black Plaster for wound closure (i.e., Wan Ying Gao).
Wan Ying Gao Formula
Indications: Specifically for beating injuries, highly effective for wound closure.
Ingredients: Xiangyou (Sesame Oil, 2 jin, authentic, filtered); Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis); Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri); Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae) (each 5 liang); Baizhi (Ramulus Platycladi); Huaizhi (Ramulus Sophorae) (each one bundle, chopped, debris removed); Fudan (Refined Litharge, 1 jin, water-refined, dried); Ruxiang (Frankincense); Moyao (Myrrh); Xuejie (Sanguis Draconis); Haiercha (Catechu) (each 3 qian, crushed, mixed, fried in pot over charcoal to fine powder, sifted); Xiangpi Hui (Elephant Skin Ash, sand-fried, sand removed, fine powder); Haipiaoxiao (Endoconcha Sepiae) (each 5 fen, fine powder); Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae, 1 qian, fine powder); Longgu (Fossilia Ossis Mastodi, 5 fen). Note: The above eight items are ultra-fine powder, sifted, mixed, and added later. Aw ei (Asafoetida, 5 fen).
Preparation: Filter 2 jin authentic sesame oil. Boil in copper pot. Add Huanglian, Huangbai, Huangqin. Boil with Sophora twig 3-4 times. Filter dregs through fine linen and thin silk paper. Clean pot. Return oil to pot, boil. Add Fudan (Refined Litharge). Stir rapidly with Sophora twig until drop test forms pearls. Pour into porcelain while hot. Gradually add the eight fine powders and Aw ei (Asafoetida). Stir continuously until mixed. Remove Asafoetida dregs. Cool completely. Ready after seven days. Storage, spreading, and washing methods are same as above.
Advice: After being caned, never pat the wound with hands. Immediately use bright Songxiang (Pine Rosin) and Shui Longgu (Fossil Bone), calcined over charcoal (preferably aged). Grind both to fine powder. Mix with egg white and apply. Evil blood will discharge naturally. If prepared in advance and applied immediately after caning, even better. Xi Songchuan uses Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) instead of Pine Rosin, claiming it is also effective.
