The *Taiping Shenghui Fang* records that the methods for treating snake bites, scorpion stings, and silkworm bites are miraculous.
Realgar (3 qian), Niu Huang (1 qian - *Note: 'Xin' refers to Realgar or Arsenolite in this context, often associated with toxic minerals like Niu Huang/Realgar mixtures in ancient texts, but strictly 'Xin' usually implies Realgar/Orpiment or specific mineral drugs. Given 'Xiong Huang' is already listed, 'Xin' likely refers to a specific preparation or typo for another mineral, but standard translation for 'Xin' in this specific formula context often points to **Realgar** or **Arsenic**. However, since Xiong Huang is present, let's look at standard interpretations. In many ancient formulas, 'Xin' might refer to **Niu Huang** (Calculus Bovis) or a specific mineral. Let's stick to the literal 'Xin' which is often **Realgar** (Xionghuang) or **Orpiment**. Wait, the text says "Xiong Huang... Xin". This suggests two different things. 'Xin' (信) in TCM pharmacology often refers to **Realgar** (when distinct from Xionghuang in some dialects/texts) or more commonly **Arsenolite** (Fushi). Given the toxicity, it is likely **Arsenolite** or a specific processed mineral. For WHO accuracy, I will use **Arsenolite** or note it as a mineral drug. Actually, in Song/Ming texts, 'Xin' often stands for **Realgar** if not specified, but here it is paired. Let's assume **Arsenolite** (Fushi) or **Realgar** variant. To be safe and accurate to WHO: **Realgar** is Xionghuang. 'Xin' is likely **Arsenolite** (Fushi) or a specific local name. I will translate as **Arsenolite** (Fushi, 信石) based on common toxic mineral usage in such formulas, or simply **Mineral Drug (Xin)**. Let's use **Arsenolite** (Fushi) as it fits the 'toxic/mineral' profile alongside Realgar.) [Correction: In many contexts, 'Xin' refers to **Realgar** itself, but since Xionghuang is listed, it might be a duplication or specific grade. However, 'Xin Shi' (信石) is Arsenolite. I will use **Arsenolite** (Fushi, 信石)]. Soapberry seeds (Zaojiaozi), Croton seeds (Badou) (40 pills each), Ear plug (E sai), Musk (Shexiang) (small amounts).
On the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, in a place where no chickens or dogs are heard and no women are present, remain silent, pound into a fine powder, seal inside apricot pits. Prick the painful area with a needle; this has great divine efficacy.
[Shi] To treat all snake and insect bites, use Fubei (Fritillaria) powder, taken with wine for effectiveness (see Snake Bite entry). Another prescription: Mix Su (Clarified Butter) and salt, apply externally. Another prescription: Pound Yimucao (Leonurus japonicus) until mushy, apply thickly to the wound. Another prescription: Apply Goose feces externally. Another prescription: Pound Biandouye (Vigna umbellata leaf) and apply. Another prescription: Use Jiu (Wine), wash the sore warmly three times a day. Another prescription: Soak Zisuye (Perilla frutescens leaf) in oil and apply to the wound.
[Shan] For various venomous insect bites, soak Zicao (Arnebia euchroma / Lithospermum erythrorhizon) in oil and apply.
[Duan] To treat snake bites, silkworm bites, and venomous insect bites, use Zhugao (Pig fat) pounded into juice and applied. (Chen Cangqi records this for dog bites.)
To treat poison from Shali (Sand flies) and Shegong (Water spiders) in mountain streams, boil Cong (Scallion), Xiao Suan (Small garlic), and Zhuyu (Cornus officinalis) in water for soaking; or pound and apply externally, with great effect.
To treat injuries from twenty-seven types of shelled insects causing sores and swelling: Use Shexiang (Musk), Xionghuang (Realgar), Ruxiang (Frankincense), and Naosha (Sal Ammoniac) (2 qian each). Burn Tu Fengwo (Earth wasp nest) and Lu Fengwo (Dew-exposed wasp nest) to ash while retaining their properties, grind finely, mix with a small amount of Cu (Vinegar), and apply to the bite site. If unable to identify, suspecting a malignant sore, failure to treat within three to five days allows the toxin to enter the heart, making it difficult to cure. Avoid chicken, fish, and greasy foods.
To treat snake bites, dog bites, and all insect poisons: Pound Shijiancao (Commelina communis) and apply.
To treat snake, dog, and mad dog bites: Mix Diuyinfen (Earthworm feces) with salt, grind, and apply externally for magical effects.
[Hai] To treat scorpion, spider, and snake venom: Gently crack a small hole in a Ji Dan (Chicken egg), place it over the bite site, and it will heal. Another prescription: First ask what insect caused the injury? Then silently recite the incantation for Huode Xingjun Heisha, blow onto the wound, and pain will naturally cease. Another prescription: Use Ai Zhu (Moxa cone) to moxibustate the wound site for three to five burns, drawing out the toxin leads to recovery.
To treat venomous snakes, Shegong, and Shali injuries: Symptoms include darkening vision, trismus (lockjaw), stiffness of hands and feet, toxins attacking the abdomen forming lumps, leading to death if not rescued promptly. Take one handful of fresh Canger Ye (Xanthium strumarium leaves), grind to extract juice, mix with warm Jiu (Wine) and administer orally. Apply the residue thickly to the injured site.
[Jian] To treat injuries from venomous snakes, Shegong, and Shali: Symptoms include darkening vision, trismus, stiffness of hands and feet, and toxic qi entering the abdomen. Use Bai Fan (Alum) and Gancao (Licorice) in equal parts, grind into fine powder. Take 2 qian per dose, mixed with cold water.
To treat poisoning from various snake and insect bites: Use Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis) and Xionghuang (Realgar) in equal parts, mix with fresh well water, and take 2 qian orally. Another prescription: Take one handful of fresh Canger Ye (Xanthium strumarium leaves), pound to extract juice, mix with warm Jiu (Wine) and drink. Apply the residue thickly to the wound. For trismus and body stiffness, administer orally.
To treat snake and dog bites resulting in Po Shang Feng (Tetanus): Take one handful (approx. 3 liang) of Feng Lizhi Cao (Tradescantia zebrina / Commelina), decoct in 2 bowls of good Jiu (Wine) until reduced to 1 bowl, then drink. The patient will sleep and sweat. If sweating does not stop, replenish with warm white porridge.
To treat bites from venomous snakes and mad dogs: Use Xionghuang (Realgar), Bibo (Long pepper), and Xixin (Asarum) in equal parts, add a small amount of Shexiang (Musk), grind into powder. Take 2 qian per dose, mixed with good Jiu (Wine).
