Jiang Fu Tang originally treats febrile disease where purgatives were used first, followed by sweating, leading to deficiency inside and out, no high fever, daytime irritability, nighttime quietness, no vomiting or thirst, and deep, hidden pulses; all these conditions are suitable for this formula. Those unfamiliar with pulse diagnosis should examine carefully. It also treats deficiency-cold in the epigastrium, long-standing phlegm-fluid retention, cold pain in the heart and abdomen, cholera with muscle cramps, and cold extremities. Another prescription uses raw Aconite in Fuzi Tang, named Baitong Tang. Adding Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) doubled and reducing Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) by half creates Sheng Fuzi Baizhu Tang (Raw Aconite and Atractylodes Powder). It treats wind-dampness affecting the middle jiao, mental confusion, abdominal distension, heaviness of the body, twitching of hands and feet, spontaneous sweating, aphasia, and incontinence of stool and urine.
Another prescription adds Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), and Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) in equal parts to Jiang Fu Tang, named Fuzi Mahuang Tang (Aconite and Ephedra Decoction). It treats cold-dampness affecting the middle jiao, dizziness and weakness, rigidity of the waist and spine, deviation of mouth and eyes, turbid voice, chest and abdominal distension, rapid breathing, inability to move; caution is advised in its use.
