Shudihuang Wan (Rehmannia Pill): Treats deficiency of blood and yin, which fails to nourish the Heart, resulting in hyperactive fire within the Yin aspect and dilation of the pupil. The Shaoyin channel belongs to Fire; the Heart is the Sovereign Monarch and remains tranquil and non-actionable, not directly executing its functions, but rather the Ministerial Fire acts on its behalf. The Ministerial Fire connects with the pericardium channel, which emerges from the heart system and divides into three pathways. The physical form of the Shaoyang Ministerial Fire is invisible, yet its function lies within it. Excessive fire causes the mother organ (Liver) to become excess, manifesting as hyperactivity of Wood (Liver). The Heart channel accompanies the eye system, and the Liver channel connects to the eye system. Moreover, both the Hand-Shaoyang and Foot-Shaoyang channels emerge from the ear, ascend to the apex of the ear, slant upwards, and terminate at the outer canthus of the eye. Pathogenic wind-heat also ascends along this pathway to attack the head and eyes, causing swelling and distension in the lateral head, dilation of the pupil, blurred vision, all due to blood deficiency and weak yin. The treatment method should involve nourishing blood, cooling blood, benefiting blood, restraining fire, dispersing fire, and eliminating wind-heat, after which the disease will be cured.
Ingredients and dosages: Shudihuang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix, 1 liang), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix, removed sprouts, 8 qian), Shengdihuang (Fresh Rehmanniae Radix, soaked in wine, dried), Dangguishen (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, body part only, washed with wine), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, each half liang), Tianmendong (Asparagi Radix, removed heart, dried), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus), Digupi (Lycii Cortex), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, each 3 qian), Renshen (Ginseng Radix, removed rhizome), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Pericarpium, stir-fried), Gancao (Licorice Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried, each 2 qian).
Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder, mix with refined honey, and make pills the size of mung beans. Take 100 pills per dose, swallowed with tea water after meals, twice daily. This preparation method aims to moderate the action of the medicine.
Strictly avoid spicy foods that assist pathogenic fire, and avoid cold foods that damage stomach qi, otherwise the medicinal power will not ascend. Another theory states: The pupil and black eye follow the principle of Yin. If one consumes spicy and hot foods, assisting fire, which then invades the chest, the eyes will dilate. When the eyes dilate, objects appear larger.
Danggui Tang (Angelica Decoction) from *Baoming Ji*: Treats nebula (pterygium/leukocoria) and benefits dilation of the pupil.
Ingredients and dosages: Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix, each 1 qian), Dangguishen (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, body part only), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba or Rubra, each 2 qian), Shudihuang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix), Gancao (Licorice Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried, each 3 qian).
Decoct the above ingredients in water and take before retiring.
Jiyin Dihuang Wan (Nourishing Female Kidney Rehmannia Pill): Treats deficiency of the Three Yin channels of the foot, with deficient fire flaming upward, leading to dilation of the eyeball and unclear vision; or blurred vision, dryness, tightness, pain, and photophobia; or sudden perception of abnormal visual phenomena. Its efficacy is similar to Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill) and Huanshao Dan (Return to Youth Pill).
Ingredients and dosages: Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus), Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Shudihuang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix), Rousongrong (Cistanches Herba), Shanzhuyu (Corni Fructus), Gansanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma, dried), Gouqizi (Lycii Fructus), Ganjuhua (Chrysanthemi Flos), Bajirou (Morindae Officinalis Radix, flesh part, equal parts).
Grind the above ingredients into a powder, mix with refined honey, and make pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 70–80 pills per dose, swallowed with plain warm water on an empty stomach.
