Aconitum (Wutou)
Pungent, sweet, warm, extremely hot, highly toxic. Mainly treats wind-stroke with aversion to wind, shivering sweating, dispels cold-damp bi-impediment, cough and rebellious qi, breaks up accumulations causing cold and heat, eliminates phlegm-cold in the chest, inability to eat, cold diseases of the heart and abdomen, pain around the navel, shoulder blade pain, inability to bend or extend, eye pain, inability to gaze for long periods. Also causes abortion. Its juice, when boiled down, is called She Wang (Poisonous Paste), which kills birds and beasts.
She Wang (Poisonous Paste)
Bitter, highly toxic. Treats Shizhu disease with hardness (a chronic wasting disease with hard masses), and wind-stroke bi-pain in the head. Also known as Xi Du, Ji Zi, and Wu Hui.
Minister Yuxi et al. verified according to "General Medicine for Gu Poison": She Wang, warm, extremely hot.
Wu Hui (U-Hui)
Pungent, slightly warm, highly toxic. Mainly treats wind-dampness, dampness in the kidney causing scrotal itching in men, alternating chills and fever in Li Jie disease (painful joints), pulling lower back pain, difficulty walking, abscesses with pus accumulation. Also causes abortion. Grows in Langling valleys, harvested in the first and second lunar months, dried in shade. Those longer than three cun are called Tian Xiong (Heavenly Male). Mang Cao (Ranunculus ternatus) acts as its guiding drug; it is incompatible with Ban Xia (Pinellia Rhizome), Gua Lou (Trichosanthes Fruit), Bei Mu (Fritillaria Bulb), Bai Lian (Tuckahoe), and Bai Ji (Bletilla Rhizome); it is opposed by Li Lu (Veratrum Root).
Tao Hongjing said: Currently, Wutou harvested in April shares the same root as Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root). When the stem first grows in spring, there is a brain-like part resembling the head of a crow, hence named Wutou. If it has two branches sharing a common stalk like ox horns, it is named Wu Hui. The beak refers to the crow's mouth. It is also harvested in August, pounded to extract juice from the stems, sun-dried and boiled into She Wang. Hunters apply it to arrowheads to shoot birds and beasts; if it enters the human body, it causes death, so rapid detoxification is necessary. Tang Ben Zhu states: Wu Hui is an alternative name for Wutou. This plant has the same sprout; some have three branches, but two branches are rare. Even if Tian Xiong and Fuzi have two branches, they still retain their original names. If Wutou has two branches, it is named Wu Hui; what would Tian Xiong and Fuzi be named if they had two branches? Minister Yuxi et al. verified according to Wu Shi: Wutou is also known as Lang, Qian Qiu, Du Gong, Guo Fu, and Geng Zi. Shen Nong, Lei Gong, Tong Jun, and Huang Di state: Sweet, toxic. Begins growing in the first lunar month, leaves are dense, stems are square and hollow, leaves are arranged four by four, resembling Artemisia. It also says Wu Hui, Shen Nong, Lei Gong, Tong Jun, and Huang Di state: Toxic. Harvested in the tenth lunar month. Shape resembles Wutou, with two branches joining like a crow's beak, named Ma Hui. The drugs it fears, opposes, and uses are the same as Wutou. "Erya" states: Ji is Dong Cao. The annotation states: It is Wutou, called Jin in Jiangdong. Cui Shi's "Simin Yueling" states: Wutou can be harvested in the third lunar month. "Yaoxing Lun" states: Wutou, guided by Yuan Zhi (Polygala Root), avoids Dou Chi (Fermented Soybean Juice), bitter, pungent, extremely hot, highly toxic. Can treat aversion to wind and fear of cold, damp-bi with rebellious qi, cold-phlegm surrounding the heart, intestinal and abdominal pain, Pi Qi masses (lumps), benefits yang function, wind-stroke with shivering and fear of cold, dispels cold and heat, treats fullness of phlegm in the chest, cold qi, inability to eat, treats cough and rebellious qi, treats toothache, breaks up cold accumulations, strengthens willpower. It also says Wu Hui, avoids Dou Chi, bitter, pungent, extremely hot. Can treat weak kidney qi in men, damp sweat in the genital area, treats pain from wind-warmth-damp pathogens, treats cold-heat abscesses that do not resolve over time. Chen Cangqi states: She Wang, besides its original functions, mainly treats sores, hard roots of sores, scrofula, toxic swelling, and snake bites. First apply medicine to the four sides of the flesh around the sore, gradually approaching the sore, feeling a cooling sensation penetrating to the bone. Apply if the sore has ripe pus and yellow fluid. Do not apply if there is no pus/fluid, if there is fresh blood, or if the skin is newly broken, as it will kill immediately. Like killing wild beasts, applying it to arrowheads causes collapse within ten steps. Ri Hua Zi states: Tu Fuzi, pungent, hot, toxic. Peel raw, pound and filter juice, clarify, add water as needed, dry to obtain paste, named She Wang. Hunters use it for poison arrows; if poisoned, Gan Cao (Licorice Root), Lan Qing (Isatis Leaf), Xiao Dou Ye (Vigna Seed Leaves), Fu Ping (Duckweed), cold water, and Ji Cai (Shepherd's Purse) can all antidote it.
Tu Jing Wen Ju is listed under the section for Ce Zi (Lateral Aconite Root).

Yanyi Yue: Wutou, Wu Hui, Tian Xiong, Fuzi, Ce Zi, these five categories are all the same substance. Named only by size, length, and resemblance. Later generations use Fuzi to tonify deficiency-cold, selecting those that are flat, round, and larger than half a liang, as their power is not excessive. Wind practitioners mostly use Tian Xiong, also selecting large ones. Because its pointed corners have more heat nature and refuse to descend, it is used for dispersing applications. This is the general principle of using Wutou and Fuzi. The other three categories are used according to their material properties. Their processing methods are already detailed in classical prescriptions.
