[Ji Ji]
Bitter in taste, neutral in nature, toxic. Primarily treats various malignant sores, scabies with crusts, and skin erosion/ulceration; also used for various sores in cattle and horses.
Tao Hongjing stated: Nowadays, people often use it to compound ointments for treating sores and scabies, which is very effective. The *Tang Bencao* annotation notes: This herb has a single stem, with four leaves at the top of the stem, and white flowers appearing between the leaf axils. It prefers to grow in valleys on shady, soft soil. The root resembles *Asari Radix et Rhizoma* (Xixin) but is black and toxic. Ingestion causes vomiting of blood. Currently, some mistake it for *Duheng*, which is incorrect. It must be used for treating scabies and itching. Minister Yuxi and others, according to the *Shu Ben Tu Jing*, recorded: Collect the roots in February and dry them in the sun. The *Yao Xing Lun* states: Ji Ji can also be used alone to treat scabies.
Rihua Zi stated: It primarily treats head sores, tinea capitis (white baldness), wind-induced pruritus, skin itching, and insect bites. It can be decocted into juice for soaking and applying externally.
Yang Zhi Zhu
Acrid in taste, warm in nature, highly toxic. Primarily treats creeping pain caused by thief-wind in the skin, warm malaria, malignant bi-syndromes, evil qi, ghostly transmission, and gu poison. Also known as Yu Zhi. Grows in the valleys of Taihang Mountain and the mountains south of the Huai River. Collect the flowers in March and dry them in the shade.
Tao Hongjing stated: It grows in mountains near various regions. The flowers and seedlings resemble *Crinum asiaticum* (Luzhong). Sheep die after mistakenly eating its leaves due to restlessness (zhi zhu), hence the name. Avoid contact with the eyes. The *Tang Bencao* annotation notes: Yu Zhi and Zhi Zhu are the same name. Tao Hongjing incorrectly stated in the Gardenia annotation that the fruit of Zhi Zhu is named Yu Zhi. The flower does not resemble Luzhong but rather *Convolvulus* (Xuan Hua), and is yellow. Current annotations describe its seedling/tree as growing three to four chi high, with leaves resembling peach leaves and flowers resembling Pomegranate tree flowers (Shan Shiliu). Minister Yuxi and others, according to the *Shu Ben Tu Jing*, recorded: The tree grows two chi high, with leaves resembling peach leaves and yellow flowers resembling melon flowers. Collect the flowers in March and April and dry them in the sun. It is now found everywhere. The *Yao Xing Lun* states: Yang Zhi Zhu dislikes various mineral drugs and flour, and should not be taken in decoctions.
The *Tu Jing* states: Yang Zhi Zhu grows in the valleys of Taihang Mountain and the mountains south of the Huai River, and is now found everywhere. In spring, the seedlings resemble Luzhong. The leaves resemble *Carthamus tinctorius* (Honghua), and the stems are three to four chi high. In summer, the flowers resemble *Campsis grandiflora* (Lingxiao), Shan Shiliu, or *Convolvulus* species, but are bright yellow. Sheep die from restlessness after mistakenly eating its leaves, hence the name. Collect the flowers in March and April and dry them in the shade. It now grows abundantly in the valleys of Lingnan and the Shu roads. They are all deep red like brocade. However, some claim this variety is not used in medicine. Ancient major formulas often used Zhi Zhu. For example, Hu Qia's treatment of epidemic red powder, formulas such as W Sou Si Man Wan for treating coughs, and various wine prescriptions for treating wind syndromes all mixed it in. It is also used for treating rheumatism from various diseases; Lu Wang Jiu also uses Zhi Zhu flowers. Currently, medical formulas like Nuo Jiao Tang use it frequently. In the south, there is a Zhi Zhu Hua San for treating gu poison and lower gastrointestinal bleeding, which is very effective.
