Seeking the nature of all things, there are always combinations and separations. When a tiger roars, wind arises; when a dragon chants, clouds rise. Magnetite attracts needles; amber attracts mustard seeds. Lacquer disperses when meeting crab; hemp swells when meeting lacquer; cinnamon softens when meeting scallion. Trees wither when meeting cinnamon; rock salt can stack eggs; badger gall divides cups [of wine]. Their qi is clear and mutually responsive, mostly like this. The principles cannot be fully comprehended by thought. As for various medicines, they especially influence each other with benefit and harm. Since the sages have clearly stated certain rules, how can one fail to investigate carefully and avoid them? People making prescriptions today often omit details. If an old prescription already contains a certain herb, that indication should be corrected or removed. If two herbs have similar effects, choose one to remove based on severity. For example, in the treatment of Shaoyang syndrome Chisan San, I often omit Lilu. In the pill for stopping diarrhea Huanglian Wan, I remove Ganjiang and use it without failure, achieving efficacy. Why force mutually repulsive herbs to coexist? The harm of "Opposite" (Xiang Fan) reactions is deeper than "Mutual Dislike" (Xiang Wu). Mutual dislike means although one dislikes the other, there is no resentment, like Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis) disliking Longgu (Fossilia Ossis Mastodi), yet Longgu works better with Niuhuang because it is controlled/subdued. Opposite reactions mean mutual enmity; they must not be combined. Today, painters place realgar and lead white close together, causing them to darken out of jealousy. Powder turns black when meeting yellow; yellow changes when meeting powder. This is proof of opposition. Because pharmacology is misunderstood, treatments fail, and people despise them. Now, regarding prescriptions, it is difficult to consult Ben Cao immediately. I have copied these matters here for easy reference. Also, Ben Jing simply lists Zhuyu and Mendong without distinguishing Shan/Wu Zhuyu or Tian/Mai Mendong; all should be labeled separately. There are also confused errors, such as Haige (Clam Shell) and Ke Jia (Shell), having identical mutual aversions. Also, various Zhi mushrooms make Shuyu effective, and Shuyu makes Zizhi effective. It seems unlikely; who is correct? Record both for future verification. Furthermore, Ben Jing lists only one "Mutually Enhancing" (Xiang Shi) pair, but referencing Yao Dui reveals two or three pairs, which is acceptable. Those listed as "Mutually Compatible" (Xiang De) treating specific diseases are not taboos and need not be listed separately.
