Anlouzi (Yan, Lü)
Bitter in taste, slightly cold and slightly warm in nature, non-toxic. Primarily treats blood stasis in the five zang organs, fluid accumulation in the abdomen, abdominal distension with lingering heat, bi syndrome caused by wind-cold-dampness, various pains of the body, hardness under the heart, cold-heat in the diaphragm, generalized bi syndrome, amenorrhea in women, digestion promotion, and vision improvement. Long-term consumption lightens the body, extends life, and prevents aging; consuming it is said to lead to immortality. Grows in the river valleys of Yongzhou, and also in Shangdang and along roadsides. Fruits are harvested in the tenth lunar month and dried in the shade. (Jingshi [Vitex fruit] and Yiyi [Coix seed] serve as its guiding/shi herbs.)
Tao Hongjing stated: It resembles mugwort or artemisia species and is found everywhere nearby. The "Immortal Classics" also use it occasionally; households plant it to repel snakes. Ministers Yuqi et al. respectfully noted: According to *Xing Yao Lun* (Treatise on the Properties of Medicinals), Anlou serves as a shi herb, with acrid and bitter tastes. It supplements qi, primarily treats impotence in men, addresses epigastric and abdominal fullness, and resolves blood stasis. Ri Huazi stated: It treats heaviness and pain in the waist and legs, bladder pain, improves vision, alleviates vexatious pain in bone joints, and stimulates appetite.
*Tujing* (Illustrated Classic) states: Anlouzi grows in the river valleys of Yongzhou and along roadsides in Shangdang. It is now also found in the Jianghuai region. Sprouts emerge in spring, leaves resemble mugwort, growing three to two chi high. Flowers bloom in the seventh lunar month, fruits set in the eighth, harvested in the tenth, and dried in the shade. Currently, people generally harvest them in the ninth lunar month. Households in Jiangnan often plant this to repel snakes. Respectfully referring to the *Ben Jing* (Divine Farmer's Materia Medica): Long-term consumption lightens the body and extends life. However, ancient formularies rarely record its use for longevity regimens; it is mostly included in miscellaneous treatments. For example, in Hu Qia’s formulas for treating fright evil such as Ligu Wan (Fox Bone Pill), it is used within large prescriptions. Sun Simiao’s *Qianjin Yi Fang* (Supplement to the Thousand Golden Formulas) and Wei Zhou’s *Duxing Fang* (Single Path Formulas) treat traumatic fractures and blood stasis, using only Anlou alone, boiled for decoction or taken as powder. Currently, treating contusions and injuries often employs this method, whether as powder or decoction, yielding the fastest effect. It is not seen in longevity/regimen texts.
Guangli Fang: Treats various blood stasis that fails to dissipate and transforms into carbuncles. Crush fresh Anlou hao (Artemisia), extract one sheng of juice, and ingest.
