**Bark of Trachycarpus fortunei (Lümu Pi):** Bitter, astringent, neutral in nature, non-toxic. When burned to ash, it treats blood stasis and stops bleeding. The fruit is initially yellowish-white, clustered like fish roe. It has slight toxicity. It breaks blood stasis but irritates the throat, so it should not be taken lightly. The bark can be made into ropes that do not rot even after being buried in the soil for a thousand years. In the past, someone excavating a tomb found it already rooted. This tree resembles those in Lingnan such as *Hu San*, *Guanglang*, *Dongye*, *Pukui* (Licuala palm), *Yezhi* (Coconut), *Binglang* (Areca nut), and *Duoluo*, each having its own uses. Lü is another name for Zonglü, which is the palm tree currently found in Sichuan.
According to *Haiyao*: As recorded by Xu Biao in *Nanzhou Ji*: Grows in the valleys of southern mountains. Neutral, warm. Treats metal wounds (*Jinchuang*), scabies, and tinea; promotes tissue regeneration and stops bleeding; best used when burned to ash. Its fruit is yellowish-white, highly toxic, and unsuitable for ingestion.
**Bark of Catalpa ovata (Qiumu Pi):** Bitter, slightly cold, non-toxic. Treats vomiting and rebellious qi, kills three types of parasites and skin parasites. Decocted into a paste, applied viscously to malignant sores, carbuncles, abscesses, ulcers, and "wild chicken disease." Removes pus and blood, promotes skin growth, and strengthens sinews and bones. Leaves, crushed and applied to sores and swelling. Can also be boiled into a decoction to wash away pus and blood. In winter, dry leaves are boiled and rubbed for use. *Fang Wang Fang*: For various swellings and carbuncles that have ulcerated, or when foreign bodies like thorns remain inside. Apply ten layers of Catalpa leaves. Grows in mountain valleys. Also planted in gardens for timber. Its root origin is the same as *Zishu* (Catalpa bungei) but its branches differ, similar to how cypress leaves differ from pine trunks. Su Jing mistakenly treated them as one species. Detailed analysis is in the section on "Resolving Confusion." *Tujing* details are under the entry for "White Bark of Catalpa bungei."
According to *Haiyao*: Slightly warm. Treats digestion, astringes intestines, directs rebellious qi downward, and treats cough with upward rushing qi; suitable for inclusion in facial preparations. *Shenghui Fang*: Treats extreme scalp itching without pain, resulting in sores. Use an unspecified amount of Catalpa leaves, crush slightly, extract juice, and apply. Another prescription: Treats moxibustion sores that fail to heal for a long time, causing itching, pain, and yellow discharge. Use Catalpa leaves or root bark, crush and sieve into powder, and apply to the sore for cure. *Waitai Miyao*: Treats abscess swelling with distress and fatigue. Apply ten layers of fresh Catalpa leaves, wrap with cloth/silk, adjust tightness appropriately, change three times daily. Relieves pain, reduces swelling, digests pus and blood; effect is excellent, surpassing other medicines. In winter, use pre-stored dry leaves, moisten with salt water before use. Also treats ruptured abscesses where pus has been drained, using urn medicine to plug the wound; if severe pain and distress occur: Remove the urn medicine, cover with ten layers of Catalpa leaves, wrap with cloth/silk, adjust tightness, change multiple times daily. Pain and distress cease immediately. This method is extremely effective, surpassing others. Treats post-ulceration of carbuncles/furuncles and frostbite with embedded thorns; very effective. If no fresh leaves in winter, store early, moisten with salt water before use, or choose an auspicious day; thin slices of white bark can also be used. Another prescription: Treats angular cheilitis. Use the white inner bark of Catalpa branches, apply wet, change frequently. *Qianjin Yi Fang*: Treats alopecia in children. Take the center of Catalpa leaves, crush, extract juice, and apply. *Zhouhou Beiji Fang*: Clean the pustule holes thoroughly; highly effective. *Zimu Milu*: Treats scalp sores in children preventing hair growth. Crush Catalpa leaves, extract juice, apply to sores; hair will grow, also treating tinea capitis (white ringworm).
