Zhang Gu (Antelope Bone): Slightly warm in nature; primarily treats deficiency exhaustion and seminal emission.
Minister Yuxi et al., according to *Yao Xing Lun* (Treatise on the Properties of Medicinals), state: Zhang Gu, sweet in taste, non-toxic.
Zhang Rou (Antelope Meat): Warm in nature. Tonifies and benefits the five zang organs.
Minister Yuxi et al., further citing the Shu edition, state: Zhang Rou, sweet in taste. Meng Shen says: The meat has similar effects to Milu (Elk) meat and can be used for brewing wine; in Daoist contexts, it is named "Bai Pu" (White Cured Meat); only antelope and deer qualify as such. Other meats do not belong to this category. Furthermore, fragrance is often found within them, about the size of a chestnut, though it does not fully emit aroma. This substance also treats malignant diseases. Eating antelope meat from the eighth month to the eleventh month is superior to eating mutton; eating it from the twelfth month to the seventh month causes Qi disturbance. If consumed by those who are emaciated or suffering from malignant conditions, it may trigger chronic diseases. Ri Hua Zi says: Antelope meat is non-toxic.
Zhang Sui (Antelope Marrow): Augments Qi and strength, and beautifies the complexion.
Tao Hongjing says: Common people call antelope "Bai Rou" (White Meat) because its gallbladder is small and prone to fright. It is also called Mi (pronounced like 'Ju Yun' cut). Mi meat should not be eaten with Hu meat, as it may form stubborn accumulations (Zheng Gu). According to Chen Cangqi's *Ben Cao*: Mi primarily treats excessive boldness and roughness of the human heart; taking the dried and powdered heart and liver, taken with wine, makes one timid; if a timid person eats it, they become even more bewildered. What Daoists call "Bai Pu" refers to Mi and Deer meat. Minister Yuxi et al., citing Ri Hua Zi, state: Bone tonifies deficiency and exhaustion, benefits essence and marrow, and brightens the complexion. Fragrance located below the umbilicus treats all types of deficiency exhaustion.
Tu Jing states: Zhang Gu and Zhang Rou, the *Ben Jing* does not record their place of origin; currently, they are abundant in shallow grasses near ponds and marshes. They are also called Mi. Antelope are very numerous, while Mi is the general name. Some have teeth, some do not; both are used similarly. However, their teeth cannot bite or chew. Cui Bao's *Gu Jin Zhu* says: Antelope have teeth but cannot bite; deer have horns but cannot gore; this is what is meant. Eating antelope meat from after the eighth month to before the eleventh month is superior to mutton; eating it from the twelfth month to the seventh month disturbs Qi. Daoists use antelope and deer meat as offerings to stars, naming it "Bai Pu," implying no taboos. Tang dynasty formulas include Zhang Gu Jiu (Antelope Bone Wine) and Zhang Sui Jian (Antelope Marrow Decoction), both tonifying the lower jiao; Zhang Nao (Antelope Brain) can also be added to facial creams.
For dietary therapy, Daoists use it for offering to stars, likely because it is not among the twelve zodiac animals and is not fishy or greasy. *Waitai Miyao* states it treats tumor diseases. Cutting antelope and deer meat into thick cured slices, grilling until hot, and applying as a compress, changing four times after four grillings, will resolve pain and suppuration. If not resolved, continue grilling; using fresh meat is effective. *Zimu Mulu* states it treats lack of lactation. Eat antelope meat cooked; do not let women eat it.
