Ancient brush tips, when burnt to ash, treat urinary retention, frequent and difficult urination, swelling of the genitals, sudden attack by evil qi, rectal prolapse, and dribbling. Burn to ash and take with water. (Preceding annotation from *Tang Bencao*). Transferred from the Herb section.
Minister Yuxi et al. respectfully note according to *Yaoxing Lun*: Brush tip ash is slightly cold in nature. It can also be used alone; burnt to ash, it treats penile flaccidity during intercourse for men. Taking the ash with wine is effective. These brushes are those used by people who lack resources.
*Tu Jing Ben Cao* has detailed records under the entry "Rabbit Skull Bone".
*Waitai Miyao* records a prescription for urinary retention, frequent urination with slight swelling: Take one old brush tip, burn to ash, mix with water and ingest. *Shengjin Fang* records: Induce labor, treat dystocia. *Shengmiao Cunjie San Fang*: Take one spoiled brush tip, burn to ash, grind finely into powder, mix with one cup of fresh lotus root juice and ingest, delivery will occur immediately. If the parturient woman is weak or has chronic cold conditions, fearing the cold nature of lotus root may disturb Qi, warm it in a silver vessel over hot water before ingestion. Fan Wang's Prescription records: Treat soreness and swelling in the throat preventing eating and drinking. Burn brush tips to ash, take one *cunbi* (a measure approx. 1 cubic inch) with rice wash. The above four items originate from Chen Cangqi.
Treats sudden bleeding from the nine orifices. Burn to powder, take one *cunbi*. Obtain beforehand from newborn calves that have not yet eaten grass; yellow calves are best.
Yao's Prescription records: Bleeding from the nine orifices and between the fingers/toes of the limbs is caused by sudden fright. Take the umbilical stool from newborn calves that have not yet eaten grass, dry in the sun, and burn to powder.
Feifei (Baboon), pungent in flavor, warm in nature, non-toxic. Treats sudden attack by evil ghostly qi, flying corpse, gu poison, sudden heart and abdominal pain, manic delusions attributed to ghosts/spirits. Used similarly to Musk (*Moschus*). Its efficacy resembles Musk. It lives in the valleys of the South Sea. It resembles a civet cat, is hermaphroditic, and is also called Lingli. *Yiwuzhi* records: Lingli possesses both yin and yang in one body. Cut open its urinary tract, attach the bladder, sprinkle with wine, and dry in the shade. Its odor resembles Musk; if mixed with genuine incense, it is hard to distinguish. It is used like Musk.
Non-toxic. Treats night terrors in children and loss of spirit due to fright in adults. It can also be made into jerky and eaten. This refers to animals struck dead by thunder.
It can also be processed as KT (pronounced same as "fu fei fan"), non-toxic. Drinking its blood causes hallucinations of ghosts. It can also be used to dye crimson red; its hair can be made into wigs. It originates from the Southwest Yi regions. It resembles a monkey. During the Xiaojian era of Song, Liao tribesmen presented Feifei from Xiboshi land. Wei Wenli, Magistrate of Anxi County, Gaocheng Commandery, presented a male and female pair. Emperor Song said: "I hear Feifei can carry a thousand jun (heavy weight). If its strength is so great, how was it captured?" Local inhabitant Ding Luan replied: "When Feifei sees humans and laughs, its upper lip covers its eyes. People drive nails into its forehead and let it run wild until it dies, then capture it. Its hair is extremely long and can be made into wigs; its blood can dye boots. Its fur resembles macaque monkeys; it has a human face with reddish skin; it speaks human language and horse sounds (or bird sounds); it knows life and death well. Drinking its blood makes people see ghosts." The emperor was delighted and ordered artisans to draw its image. It also appears in *Shanhaijing*. *Erya* records: Feifei resembles humans, runs swiftly with disheveled hair, and eats humans. Also called Xiaoyang; locals also call it Shandu. Guo Jingchun wrote an ode (text too long to include). Jerky with fat, sliced thinly and roasted over fire, applied to tinea lesions; parasites will enter the jerky. Remove after a short while; repeat three to five times within moments for cure.
