[Fuqing]
Taste: Acrid, Salty. Nature: Neutral. Toxicity: Non-toxic. Indications: Mainly treats gu poison (a type of ancient Chinese poisoning or parasitic disease) and various poisons from snakes, vegetables, and meat, as well as malignant sores. It should not be taken for a long time, as it causes emaciation. Also known as Tuiqing, also known as Tuishi. Grows in the valleys of Yizhou.
Tao Hongjing stated: Neither common prescriptions nor the "Immortal Classics" use this substance, and people no longer recognize each other's knowledge of it.
[Manato / Agate]
Taste: Acrid. Nature: Cold. Toxicity: Non-toxic. Indications: Mainly repels evil influences, and is used to compress red, rotting eyes. Its red color resembles Manato (Agate); it is a type of beautiful stone and a precious treasure. It grows among jade stones in Western Regions; those brought to China are made into vessels, also called Manato pearls. The claim that it is spat out by horses is mostly false talk by Hu people to inflate its value. (New supplement found in Chen Cangqi's works.)
Chen Cangqi stated: Manato comes from the country of Japan. When grinding wood with it, if it does not become hot, it is superior; if it becomes hot, it is not genuine.
Yanyi states: Manato is neither stone nor jade; it belongs to a distinct category. There are three colors: red, white, and black. Some have patterns like twisted silk. Those from the Western borders are excellent. Local people grind small ones into playthings and large ones into vessels. In modern ancient prescriptions, it can be used medicinally. This substance is highly valued in the West, hence frequently mentioned in Buddhist scriptures. Since the story of it being spat from a horse's mouth is known to be false, it should not have been included.
[Taiyin Xuanjing]
Taste: Salty. Nature: Warm. Toxicity: Non-toxic. Indications: Mainly dispels wind-cold, pathogenic qi, damp-bi obstruction, benefits essence and qi, treats chronic cold conditions and leukorrhea/menorrhagia in women, accumulation of cold qi in the heart and abdomen, stops headache, and resolves the muscle layer. Those with greenish-white color and a turtle-shell-like texture are good; they come from Jie County. (Currently appended.)
Tujing states: Taiyin Xuanjing comes from Jie County. Currently, it is also found in the salt pools of Jiechi and in the salt warehouses of Tongzhou and Taizhou. Those with greenish-white color and a turtle-shell texture are excellent. There is no specific season for harvesting. Jiechi also produces salt essence, which tastes more salty and bitter, is dark green-black, up to two or three inches in size, shaped like an iron plowshare tip, harvested in March and April. It also mainly dispels wind-cold and is non-toxic. Also known as Nijing, likely a type of Xuanjing. It was not used in ancient prescriptions but is commonly used in recent times for tonics and treating Shanghan (Cold Damage). Specifically, crystallized forms treat headache, high fever, and limb stiffness after three days of Shanghan.
Zhengyang Dan formula: Taiyin Xuanjing, Potassium Nitrate (Xiaoshi), Sulfur (Huang) each 2 liang, Sand 1 liang. All four substances are finely ground together, placed in a porcelain bottle, sealed tightly with mud, and heated with half a jin of charcoal heat around the bottle at a distance of one cun. After about half a day, when the medicine turns blue-purple, stop heating. After cooling, take it out, mix evenly with snow water collected in the twelfth lunar month until moist, place in a porcelain jar, and dry in the shade under the north side of the house behind the roof. Then bury it in the ground for twenty-seven days, take it out, grind finely, and bind with flour paste to make pills the size of a chestnut. First, take a hot bath, then swallow one pill with Artemisia soup. Cover with clothes; sweating indicates recovery.
Tangben Yu states: It is also produced in nearby areas, with red and greenish-white colors, but large flakes are not good. Shen Cunzhong stated: In saline lands, Yinjing Stone naturally grows.
Yanyi states: Taiyin Xuanjing Stone, when combined with other herbs, has special methods for applying to Da Feng Ji (severe skin diseases like leprosy). For Yin Syndrome Shanghan, presenting with cyanotic nails and complexion, deep, fine, and rapid pulse, epigastric fullness and hardness, dry thirst, continuous deficiency sweating, occasional delirium, cold limbs, throat discomfort, and abdominal pain, it must be assisted by other herbs. Tujing Bencao already records methods; only those from Jiezhou are of good quality.
