Mangcao (Rhododendri Daurici Folium)
Pungent, bitter, warm, toxic. Primarily treats head wind-induced carbuncles and swellings, breast carbuncles (acute purulent infection of the breast), hernia, and mass formations in the abdomen; resolves qi stagnation, scabies, and pruritus. Kills parasites and fish. Treats throat obstruction (sore throat with blockage and difficulty swallowing) and difficult lactation. For head wind causing scalp pruritus, it can be used for washing; do not let it enter the eyes. Also known as [Character Missing], also known as Chuncao (Spring Herb). Grows in the valleys of Shanggu and Yuanju. Leaves are harvested in the month of Wu (May) and dried in the shade.
Tao Hongjing states: It is now found everywhere in the eastern regions; those with fresh green leaves and strong aroma are superior. People crush it and mix it with rice, placing it in water; fish that swallow it die and float to the surface, and humans can eat the fish without harm. The character "Mang" in Mangcao is also written as [Character Missing] (pronounced wǎng), commonly referred to today as [Character Missing] cao. Minister Yuxi et al. carefully note according to *Erya*: "[Character Missing], Chuncao." The explanation states: It is a medicinal herb, commonly called [Character Missing] cao today. Guo Pu says: One name is Mangcao, due to differences in the versions seen. *Yaoxing Lun* records: "[Character Missing] cao, serves as a minister drug. It can treat... Pulverized, mixed with egg white into a paste, applied to toxic swellings; replace immediately when dry. Rihua Zi states: Treats skin numbness; decoct strongly and wash; treats toothache caused by wind."
*Tujing* states: Mangcao, also called [Character Missing] cao. Produced in Shanggu and Yuanju; currently found in southern prefectures and Shu region. The tree resembles Shinan (Rhododendri Daurici) but has sparse leaves, no flowers or fruits. Leaves are harvested in May and July and dried in the shade. Another theory states: It is a vine, winding among trees and rocks. Ancient prescriptions: Various wines treating wind-toxic bi-syndrome and厥 (jue/collapse) all use [Character Missing] cao. Currently, holding it in the mouth for a moment and spitting it out effectively treats toothache caused by wind-disease. This is a woody plant. However, *Erya · Shi Cao* states: "[Character Missing], Chuncao." The explanation states: Medicinal herb, Mangcao. Guo Pu says: One name is Mangcao, because the pronunciation is similar. However, those called "cao" (grass/herb) are creeping plants.
*Tangben Yu* records: Treats dystocia. Leigong states: When using it, after harvesting, select leaves and cut finely. Additionally, take raw Gancao (Licorice Root) and Shuiliao (Water Smartweed), both cut finely. Place the toxic woody leaves in a raw thin silk bag, put them in a steamer, and steam together with Gancao and Shuiliao for one day. Remove the two herbs, take out and dry for use. Do not use leaves with bifid tips. *Shenghui Fang*: Treats dental caries holes, pain, and worms. Use [Character Missing] cao pulverized, wrap in cotton, insert into the tooth hole, or bite on the painful area; lower head and spit saliva without swallowing, pain will subside. Another prescription: Treats luoli (scrofula) swelling, hardness, and nodule formation. Use one liang of [Character Missing] cao pulverized, mix with egg white, apply on cloth, patch onto the affected area, change twice daily, and it will heal. *Zhouhou Fang*: Treats carbuncles and sores not yet ulcerated. Use [Character Missing] cao powder, apply thickly on paper moistened with egg white, stick it; replace when dry, effectively relieves pain. Also treats wind-toothache and cheek swelling. Use five liang, add one dou of water, boil to obtain five sheng; hold hot in mouth and spit out, consume within one day. *Meishi Fang*: Treats swollen and painful teeth. [Character Missing] cao and Yuliren (Prunus japonica Seed) four liang each, add six sheng of water, decoct to obtain two sheng, remove dregs, hold hot in mouth and spit out when cool. *Zhouli · Jian Shi* manages the removal of pests; fumigation with [Character Missing] cao kills them.
*Yanyi* states: Mangcao, now called [Character Missing] cao. Decoct strongly and wash to treat skin numbness. *Benjing* calls it Chuncao. All schools consider it a herb, but it is now classified in the Woody category, as is *Tujing*. What is used in the world today are all woody leaves. Like Shinan, branches and stems are wrinkled; rubbing them releases an aroma like Sichuan pepper. *Erya · Shi Cao* states: "[Character Missing], Chuncao." The explanation states: Current Mangcao. This matches *Benjing*, so it should be stated fully. In the Shinan entry, Tao Hongjing's annotation says: Resembles [Character Missing] cao, does not shed leaves in winter. Undoubtedly a woody plant.
