[Shikakai / Terminalia chebula] Bitter in taste, warm in nature, non-toxic. It primarily treats bloody and purulent dysentery (Chi Bai Li), intestinal slippage, and promotes muscle regeneration. It originates from the Western Regions (Xi Rong).
The *Tang Bencao* commentary states: It grows among sand and gravel. The tree resembles *Tamarix* (Cheng Liu). Current annotations state it is also known as "Mo Shi Zi". It originates from Persia. It treats pediatric malnutrition (Gan syndrome), darkens eyebrows and hair, treats genital sores and genital discharge, and harmonizes the middle jiao and regulates qi. (This entry was originally appended to the *Tang Bencao*). Minister Yuxi et al. carefully examined the *Yao Xing Lun*, stating: Shikakai, when used as an assistant drug, treats abdominal distension and miscellaneous diseases in adults and children.
The *Zazu* records: Mo Shi Zi originates from Persia, where it is called "Mozai Tree". It is six or seven zhang high, with a trunk circumference of eight or nine chi. The leaves resemble peach leaves but are longer. It flowers in the third lunar month; the flowers are white with a slightly red center. The fruit is round like a bullet, green when young, and turns yellowish-white when ripe. Those eaten by insects and perforated are used for medicinal purposes. This tree produces Shikakai one year and "Balü" (a type of fruit) the next year. Balü is finger-sized, three cun long, has a shell, and the kernel inside is yellow like millet, which is edible.
*Haiyao Bencao*: Carefully examining Xu Biao's *Nanzhou Ji*, it states: In Persia, the fruit is small, similar in size to medicinal seeds. Its taste is warm and neutral, and it is non-toxic. It treats cold-type dysentery due to intestinal deficiency, benefits blood and generates essence, blackens hair and eyebrows, harmonizes qi and calms the spirit, and treats yin toxicity and impotence. It should be burned to ash before use. Zhang Zhongjing used it to treat sweaty genitals. Take the ash, first wash the area with lukewarm water, then wrap the ash in silk cloth and apply it to the scrotum; this is very effective. Persians eat it as a fruit with every meal. Fanhu people call it "Meishi Zi". People today call it "Moshi Zi", which is a phonetic error.
Lei Gong said: When using Moshi Zi, avoid contact with copper and iron, and avoid exposure to fire shock. Small grains with fine texture and no rice-like spots on top are superior. Grind it thoroughly in a mortar made of clay or hard bluestone using grain vinegar water, then dry it over low heat and grind again. Do not pound it, as it will turn the color of black rhinoceros horn. *Qianjin Fang*: To treat acute gan syndrome eroding the mouth and nose, grind Mo Shi Zi into powder and insufflate it into the affected area; it will heal. *Zimu Milu*: To treat postpartum dysentery. Take one Mo Shi Zi, burn it to ash, and take with wine using a measure of one cun cube. Take two cold stones, slice them, stir-fry until yellow, grind them, and eat them as wontons.
*Yanyi* states: Mo Shi Zi is currently used by people mixed with other herbs to dye eyebrows and hair.
