Shu Jiao (Zanthoxylum schinifolium)
Pungent in flavor, warm and extremely hot in nature, toxic. It primarily treats cough and qi rebellion caused by pathogenic factors, warms the middle jiao, expels dead muscle tissue from the joints and skin, treats bi syndrome pain due to cold-dampness, directs rebellious qi downward, eliminates coldness in the six fu organs, treats shanghan (cold damage), wen nue (warm malaria), wind disease with inability to sweat, retained fluid and undigested food in the heart and abdomen, intestinal dysentery, spermatorrhea, residual diseases in women after childbirth, dissipates wind-pathogen-induced zha jie (accumulations and masses), edema, jaundice, gui zhu gu du (ghostly afflictions and poisoning), kills parasites and fish toxins. Long-term consumption prevents graying of hair, lightens the body, and prolongs life. It opens the cou li (pores and interstices), unblocks blood vessels, strengthens teeth and hair, harmonizes joints, enhances resistance to cold and heat, and can be used to make plasters. Excessive consumption leads to qi deficiency; ingestion of closed-mouth peppers can be fatal. Also known as Ba Jiao (Sichuan Pepper), or Yi Tang Yi Gu. Grows in the river valleys of Wudu and the commandery of Ba. Fruits are harvested in the eighth lunar month and dried in the shade. (Xing Ren / Apricot Seed acts as an assistant; it fears Kuan Dong Hua / Farfara Flower.)
Tao Hongjing states: It is produced in the north of Shu Du and cultivated by households. The peel and flesh are thick, the interior is white, and the aroma is strong. It is also found in Jiangyang, Jinyuan, and Jianping, but these are thinner, reddish, pungent but not fragrant, and less potent than those from Ba Jun. Ba Jiao is toxic and should not be taken; regarding the name "one name," it is likely incorrect. There is also Qin Jiao (Qin Pepper), which is black and listed in the Middle Category. When using pepper, it must be lightly roasted until moisture appears, called "Han Jiao" (Sweating Pepper), to enhance its efficacy. Jiao Mu (Pepper Seeds) are cold in nature and used separately in medicine. They treat abdominal distension and fullness and promote urination. Currently, pepper from Xicheng in Jin Zhou is considered superior. Minister Yuxi and others cite the commentary on Er Ya: "Yi" is another name for large pepper. Guo Pu says: "Currently, pepper trees that grow in clusters with large fruits are called Yi." The Book of Songs · Tang Feng says: "Jiao luo qie." Lu Ji says: "The pepper tree resembles Cornus officinalis, has thorns, leaves are hard and smooth. People in Shu use it to make tea, people in Wu use it to make ming, both boiled together. Peppers in the mountains are called Zhu Ye Jiao (Bamboo Leaf Pepper). Its tree is similar to Shu Jiao, slightly toxic, hot in nature, and unsuitable for medicinal use. It is best for feeding pigs due to its fragrance. There are also pepper trees on islands in the East Sea; branches and leaves are similar, fruits are elongated and not round, very fragrant, tasting like orange peel. Deer and gazelles on the islands eat these pepper leaves, and their meat naturally acquires a pepper and orange scent. Yao Xing Lun states: Shu Jiao, assistant herb, fears Xiong Huang (Realgar). Also known as Lu Bo, slightly toxic. It treats stubborn headache due to cold wind, stops tearing, treats immobility of waist and legs, resolves deficiency and stagnation, breaks blood stasis, expels various types of stone water, treats cough, primarily treats cold pain in the abdomen, and relieves toothache. It also states that Jiao Mu, assistant herb, treats twelve types of fluid retention. Bitter and pungent, slightly toxic. It treats mixing Radix Croci (Ba Dou), Rhizoma Acori Tatarinowii (Chang Pu), and Resina Pini (Song Zhi) melted with wax into tubes, inserted into the ear to draw out kidney qi deficiency, where the ear sounds like wind or water, or like striking bells and chimes, sudden deafness, changed once a day, highly effective. Ri Hua Zi states: Han Jiao breaks up mass formations, opens the stomach, treats epidemic febrile diseases, residual blood after childbirth, treats qi stagnation in the heart and abdomen, tonifies yang, treats genital sweating, warms waist and knees, reduces urination frequency. Jiao Mu treats bladder urgency. It also states that Jiao Ye (Pepper Leaves) are hot and non-toxic. They treat Ben Tun (running piglet sensation), Fu Liang Qi (lying beam qi), internal and external kidney hook pain, and cholera with tendon twitching. Ground with scallions and mixed with vinegar soup for consumption, all are effective.
Tu Jing states: Shu Jiao grows in the river valleys of Wudu and Ba Jun. Now, it is widely cultivated in gardens by households in Gui Zhou, Xia Zhou, Shu Chuan, and Shan Luo areas. It is four to five chi tall with thorns. Leaves are hard and smooth, edible when boiled, very pungent and fragrant. Fruits form in the fourth lunar month without flowers, growing among leaves, colored [illustration reference], harvested in the eighth lunar month and baked dry. This type of pepper exists in Jiang Huai and northern regions; stems and fruits are similar, but inferior to those from Shu in terms of thick peel/flesh, white interior, and strong aroma. Prescriptions for nourishment: Single administration of Jiao Hong (pepper red/husk) tonifies the lower jiao; Shu Jiao is preferred. Wei Zhou's Du Xing Fang treats various sores affected by wind. Take one sheng of raw Shu Jiao, mix with a small amount of flour to wrap the pepper tightly without leaking air, divide into two packets, roast in ash fire until cooked, remove while hot, pierce holes, apply directly over the sore to let pepper vapor penetrate. Replace when cool. After a short time, fluid exudes from the sore and the whole body sweats, leading to recovery. Shi Zhou has another type, Ya Jiao (Cliff Pepper); locals harvest bark year-round for medicine. It is pungent, hot, non-toxic. Treats lung qi rebellion with asthma and cough. Mixed with wild ginger powder, taken with wine (size of a coin slice), very effective. Avoid taking with salt. Another entry mentions Man Jiao Tiao: Grows in river valleys and hills of Yun Zhong. Stems and roots are boiled to make wine. Tao Hongjing says: Commonly called Yi, smaller than Dang Jiao, not fragrant. Now distinctions are lost; some say it is Jin Jiao. Yi Zi comes from Min Zhong and Jiang Dong; the tree resembles Paulownia, has thorns on stems, seeds are pungent like pepper. Treats wandering ghosts, flying corpse, and cold abdomen. Southerners pickle them as fruit or send them as gifts. Wu Yue Chun Qiu states: Yue state sent Gan Mi Wan (sweet honey pills) to Wu state as a gift for increased fiefdom titles; thus, the giving of Yi has a long history.
Lei Gong says: Also known as Nan Jiao. When using, remove seeds and closed-mouth peppers. First, soak seeds in wine, steam from Si hour to Wu hour, cool, cover tightly, remove from heat sources until no gas remains, then store in porcelain jars, protected from wind. Shi Liao states: Warm in nature. Large grains treat upper qi cough and chronic wind-damp bi. For toothache, decoct with vinegar and hold in mouth. For wounds becoming sores affected by wind, wrap in dough, roast in ashes, replace frequently. Also treats wound-induced arch wind. For chronic mouth ulcers, remove closed-mouth peppers, wash with water, mix with flour, boil into porridge, swallow three to five spoons on an empty stomach, follow with rice to settle. Repeat until cured. Pepper is warm, pungent, toxic. Treats wind-pathogen abdominal pain, cold-bi, warms middle, relieves toothache, strengthens teeth and hair, brightens eyes, stops vomiting, removes scars, promotes hair growth, induces sweating, directs qi downward, benefits spirit, anti-aging, nourishes blood, benefits five zang organs. Treats postpartum diseases, promotes lactation. Long-term use causes shortness of breath. In the tenth month [color/state reference]. Sheng Hui Fang: Treats swelling from sleeping in cold causing snake-like sensation in mouth. Mix raw pepper powder, flour, and soot from pot bottom with strong vinegar and apply. Qian Jin Fang: For coldness in genitals gradually entering scrotum causing swelling, fear of death, day and night pain preventing sleep. Take clean raw pepper, wrap in cloth, form a bag half-inch thick, apply; heat spreads quickly, change twice daily until cured. Zhou Hou Fang: Treats metal wound affected by wind. Measure pepper amount by wound size, make dough wrappers, roast until cooked, make a hole, cover wound to draw out wind, make several pieces, replace as needed, excellent. Another formula for snake venom: Grind closed-mouth pepper and leaves, apply to stop. Sun Simiao says: Do not eat pepper in the tenth month; it damages qi and heart, causes forgetfulness. Another formula for heart and abdominal pain: Wrap pepper in cloth, place on fire source, iron until pepper sweats, good. Dou Men Fang: Treats internal deficiency-cold, long-term use preserves youth. Select raw peppers, remove undeveloped ones and black seeds, take 40 grains, soak in grain water overnight until mouths close, take on empty stomach with fresh well water. Removes chronic cold, warms viscera, long-term use preserves youth, blackens hair, brightens eyes, increases appetite, excellent. Sheng Jin Fang: Treats craving raw tea. Use unspecified amount of pepper powder, make pills with paste size of wu zi (wu berry), take ten pills with tea. Shen Shi Fang: Treats cracked hands and feet. Four he of pepper, boil in water, strain, soak limbs, wait half meal time, dry, soak again, dry, apply sheep or pork marrow, excellent. Yao He Zhong: Treats infant watery diarrhea and milk malnutrition. One fen of pepper, remove seeds, grind to powder, mix with butter, apply sparingly to fontanelle, three times a day. Tan Shi: Treats infant watery diarrhea with Jiao Hong San, and diarrhea in people over fifty. Two liang of pepper, two sheng of vinegar, boil vinegar away, dry slowly over low heat, grind to powder, store in porcelain. Take two qian bi doses with wine or rice drink. Another formula for lacquer dermatitis: Wash with Han Jiao decoction, heals immediately. Yuan Shen Qi: Pepper and ginger ward off plague, benefit intelligence.
Yan Yi states: Shu Jiao must be lightly roasted until sweating occurs, and attached red/yellow shells must be removed. Method to remove shells: Lightly roast, put into bamboo tube while hot, shake vigorously, pound repeatedly, until complete. All pepper usage requires this. The seed inside is called Jiao Mu, especially effective for treating night sweats. Lightly roast Jiao Mu, grind to fine powder, take half qian bi, decoct fresh pig upper lip in one he of water, mix powder with soup, take before sleep, always effective. Because Jiao Mu...
