(Micangxiang / Zhan Sugar Fragrance) Properties are slightly warm. It treats wind-water toxic swelling, removes malignant qi and latent corpse-possession qi (Fu Shi).
Tao Hongjing stated: This fragrance is essential for incense blenders (Xiang Jia), but is not formally used in medicine. It is only used to treat malignant nodules and toxic swellings. Micangxiang originates from Jin'an and Cenzhou. The truly pure and authentic grade is hard to obtain; it is often adulterated with its bark and the excrement of wood-boring insects. Only those that are soft are considered superior. Other fragrances do not have issues of authenticity but differ in refinement and coarseness. The *Tang Bencao* annotation notes: The Micangxiang tree resembles... [Text missing/illustration reference]. Tao Hongjing stated: White Tan (Baitan) dissipates heat-induced swelling. Minister Yuxi et al., according to Chen Cangqi, noted: It primarily treats heart and abdominal Huoluan (cholera-like syndrome), Zhong'e (sudden severe illness due to evil qi), Guiqi (ghost qi), and kills parasites. The Baitan tree resembles Tan trees and originates from Hainan. Rihua Zi stated: Tanxiang (Sandalwood) is hot in nature and non-toxic. It treats heart pain and Huoluan, and Qi pain in the kidneys. Decocted strongly for oral administration, or ground with water for external application, suitable for kidney and lower back pain areas. Detailed illustrations and texts are recorded under the entry for Chenxiang (Agarwood) in *Tujing*.
(Ruxiang / Frankincense) Properties are slightly warm. It treats wind-water toxic swelling, removes malignant qi, and treats wind-induced urticaria with itching and toxicity.
Rihua Zi stated: Pungent in taste, hot in nature, slightly toxic. It directs Qi downward, benefits Jing (Essence), tonifies the waist and knees, treats Kidney Qi disorders, stops Huoluan, disperses malignant evil qi invasion, treats heart and abdominal pain, and Zhuqi (infectious disease). Prepared as a plaster to stop pain and promote tissue growth; when added to pills and powders, it should be lightly stir-fried to reduce toxicity and prevent stickiness. Chen Cangqi stated: It belongs to the category of Xunluxiang (Olibanum). Its nature is warm. It treats... [Text missing]. *Haiyao Bencao* stated: Noururexiang (Nipple Fragrance/Frankincense), according to *Guangzhi*, originates from the South Sea. It is resin from Persian pine. Those that are purple-red and like cherries are of the highest grade. Immortal formulas often use it for Bigu (grain avoidance), and additionally treat deafness, stroke, lockjaw with inability to speak, and effectively treat women's blood and qi disorders. It can make rouge wine turn red and transparent; those that are red and transparent are superior. *Jianyao Jizhong* formula for inducing labor: Take one fen of yellow, high-quality Ruxiang, grind finely into powder, mix evenly with sow's blood, form pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take five pills per dose, washed down with wine. *Boji Fang* treats fetus death in the womb. Take yellow, high-quality Ruxiang, mix with pig heart blood collected at noon on Dragon Boat Festival or on New Year's Eve, grind into pills the size of a cockle. Store in a red silk bag and hang on the door. If a patient presents symptoms, have them dissolve one pill in wine and swallow. Another formula treats acute and chronic convulsive diseases (Jing Feng). Take half liang of Ruxiang and half liang of Kansui (Radix Euphorbiae Kansui), grind together finely. Take half qian per dose, mixed with Ruxiang decoction or urine, which is excellent. *Lingyuan Fang* treats Onychocryptosis (Ingrown Nail/Jia Ju) where flesh wraps the nail with pus and blood, causing persistent pain. For this condition, the nail embedded in the flesh must be removed; even without treatment, it may heal. If an ulcer has formed and does not heal, use this method: apply equal parts of Ruxiang powder and calcined Vitriol (Danfan) topically; the necrotic flesh will disappear and healing will occur. Shen Kuo (Shen Cunzhong) believed Ruxiang is identical to Xunluxiang. Those shaped like nipples are called Ruxiang; those flattened against the ground are called Taxiang. *Danfang Jingyuan* refers to Ruxiang as "Yatong" (Dumb Copper).
