Curcuma Tuber (Yujin)
Pungent, bitter, cold, non-toxic. It primarily treats blood accumulation (blood stasis), directs qi downward, promotes tissue regeneration, stops bleeding, breaks down bad blood (stagnant blood), and treats strangury with blood (dysuria with hematuria), hematuria, and metal wounds (traumatic injuries caused by sharp objects).
The *Tang Bencao* commentary states: The foliage of this herb resembles that of Curcuma longa (Jianghuang), the flowers are white with a reddish hue, it sprouts from the stem heart in late autumn, produces no seeds, and the roots are yellow-red. Harvest the lateral tuberous roots, remove the skin, and dry them over fire. It grows in Shu region and the Western Regions. Equine veterinarians use it to break blood while also providing tonification; Hu people call it "Ma". Those from Lingnan have fruits resembling small cardamom, which are inedible.
(Attached from *Tang Bencao*) Minister Yuxi et al. carefully examined the *Yaoxing Lun*, stating: Curcuma Tuber can be used alone. It treats heart pain caused by retained blood and qi in women, and the aggregation of cold qi. It should be taken warm after grinding with vinegar. It is also used as an equine medicine to treat distension and pain.
The *Tujing Bencao* states: Regarding Curcuma Tuber, the *Shennong Bencao Jing* does not record its place of origin. Su Gong stated: It grows in Shu and the Western Regions, where Hu people mainly call it "Ma". Currently, it is also found in Guangnan and various commanderies in Jiangxi, though those from Shu are superior. It begins to grow in early April; the foliage resembles Curcuma longa, flowers are white with a reddish hue, sprouts from the stem heart in late autumn, and bears no fruit. The roots are yellow-red; harvest the lateral tuberous roots, remove the skin, and dry over fire. It was rarely used in ancient prescriptions but is frequently used in modern pediatric formulas and by equine veterinarians. According to Xu Shen's *Shuowen Jiezi*: "Yu" refers to fragrant grass. Ten leaves constitute one bundle; one hundred and twenty bundles are pounded and boiled to make Yu. Yu refers to the present-day Yulin Commandery. In the Wood category, middle grade, there is Tulip (Yujin Xiang), said to originate from Daqin (Rome). It blooms in February and March, resembling Carthamus tinctorius (Honglan), and its flower is the spice. Chen Shi stated: It is the essence of all herbs. Since it is called the essence of herbs, it must be a grass type. To name it the same yet place it in the Wood category is incorrect. People no longer use it, and no one distinguishes it, so it is merely attached here.
Empirical Prescription: For intractable hematuria. Take one liang of Curcuma Tuber, pound into powder, mix with one handful of scallion whites. Add one cup of water, decoct until three he remain, strain, and take warm. Must be taken three times daily.
Subsequent Empirical Prescription: For wind-phlegm. One fen of Curcuma Tuber, ten fen of Veratrum nigrum (Lilu), each ground into powder, mixed evenly. Take one zi dose per administration. Use one cup of warm sour rice water; first mix with a small amount of sour rice water to swallow, then rinse mouth with remaining liquid and consume entirely. Follow with food to suppress the medicinal force. Sun Yonghe treated Yang toxin entering the stomach, frequent lower bleeding, and unbearable pain. Take five large Curcuma Tubers and a soap-bean-sized amount of Calculus Bovis (Niuhuang), grind separately into fine powder, combine both into a powder. For each dose, add one cup of vinegar-sour rice water, boil together for three boils, and take warm.
*Danfang Jingyuan* states: Ash can be used to form cinnabar grains. *Shuowen* states: It is fragrant grass. Ten leaves make one bundle, one hundred and twenty bundles pounded and boiled to make Yu. From mortar, door, jar, chang wine... it is decoration; alternatively called Yu Chang, the flower of all herbs. Fragrant grass offered by distant Yu people. Mixed and brewed to invoke spirits. *Zhou Li* Yu Ren: For all sacrificial guo rituals, Yu Chang is used.
*Yanyi* states: Curcuma Tuber has no fragrance. Currently, people use it to dye women's clothing, resulting in the most vivid color, but it cannot withstand sun exposure. Dyed garments have only a faint scent of Curcuma Tuber.
