Deer Antler Velvet (Lurong)
Sweet and sour in taste, warm and slightly warm in nature, non-toxic. It primarily treats abnormal uterine bleeding with dark blood (Lou Xia E Xue), alternating chills and fever with convulsions and epilepsy (Han Re Jing Xian), tonifies Qi and strengthens the will (Yi Qi Qiang Zhi), promotes tooth growth and anti-aging (Sheng Chi Bu Lao), treats deficiency exhaustion (Xu Lao), shivering chills resembling malaria (Sa Sa Ru Nue), emaciation (Lei Shou), soreness and pain in the four limbs (Si Zhi Suan Teng), pain in the waist and spine (Yao Ji Tong), frequent urination (Xiao Bian Li), seminal emission and hematuria (Xie Jing Ni Xue), breaks up stagnant blood in the abdomen (Po Liu Xue Zai Fu), disperses lithiasis (Shi Lin) and carbuncles and swellings (Yong Zhong), and heat abscesses in the bones (Gu Zhong Re Ju). Minister Yu Xi et al., according to *Yao Xing Lun* (Treatise on the Properties of Medicinals): Deer antler velvet is a Sovereign drug (Jun), bitter and acrid in taste. It primarily tonifies kidney deficiency and cold in men, weakness in the legs and knees, nocturnal emissions during dreams (Ye Meng Gui Jiao), spontaneous seminal loss (Jing Yi Zi Chu), metrorrhagia and leukorrhea in women (Bu Zhong Lou Xue). After roasting and grinding into powder, take one cubic inch spoonful (Fang Cun Bi) with warm wine on an empty stomach. It also treats red and white leukorrhea (Chi Bai Dai Xia), used in powders. Meng Shen said: Deer antler velvet primarily benefits Qi. It should not be smelled; there are tiny white worms inside the velvet that are invisible to the naked eye. If they enter the nose, they cause "worm throat" (Chong Sang - a nasal lesion), rendering the medicine ineffective. Ri Hua Zi said: Deer antler velvet tonifies deficiency and emaciation (Bu Xu Lei), strengthens sinews and bones (Zhuang Jin Gu), breaks up blood stasis (Po Yu Xue), kills demonic essences (Sha Gui Jing), calms the fetus (An Tai), and directs Qi downward (Xia Qi). (Must be processed with butter before use.) It nourishes bones, calms the fetus, directs Qi downward, kills demonic essences, and should not be brought near the genitals, as it causes impotence (Wu). Long-term use promotes longevity.
Harvested when the antlers shed in April and May, dried in the shade. Use when dry. Ma Bo (Hemp pollen) is its guiding herb.
*Tang Ben Zhu* notes: Deer antler velvet is harvested in summer and dried in the shade; less than one percent is retained. Even if a dry piece is obtained, it smells foul and is unusable. Drying it over fire is very good. Minister Yu Xi et al., according to *Yao Xing Lun*: Deer bone is sweet in taste, slightly hot, and non-toxic.
Antler (Jiao) Salty in taste, non-toxic. Treats malignant sores and carbuncles (E Chuang Yong Zhong), drives out evil qi, stagnant blood in the yin organs, relieves acute abdominal pain due to blood stasis, waist and spine pain, traumatic blood stasis, and benefits Qi. Harvested in July. Du Zhong is its guiding herb.
Minister Yu Xi et al., according to *Yong Ju Tong Yong Yao*: Deer antler is warm and slightly warm. Meng Shen said: Grind the antler into powder, soak in five sheng of white honey, simmer over low heat until the antler powder amounts to three finger-pinches, mix with clear wine and ingest to expel demonic essence. Also, for women with residual blood in the uterus causing severe distress, mix deer antler ash with clear wine, take one cubic inch spoonful, three times daily and once at night, which is very effective. For pediatric macroglossia (Zhong She), boil mung bean juice with deer antler ash and apply under the tongue three times daily. Ri Hua Zi said: Antler treats sores, carbuncles, swellings, and heat toxins by grinding with vinegar and applying. It also treats seminal emission, hematuria, and nocturnal emissions by grinding with water and ingesting. For pediatric macroglossia and thrush (E Kou Chuang), roast and apply.
Marrow (Sui) Sweet in taste, warm. Treats internal injury in men and women, severed pulses, acute tendon pain, and cough with reversed Qi. Mix with wine for ingestion, which is beneficial.
Minister Yu Xi et al., according to *Yao Xing Lun*: Deer marrow is non-toxic. Ri Hua Zi said: Marrow treats weak sinews and bones and vomiting. Decoct with Rehmannia juice to make a paste for filling bone marrow. Decoct with honey to tonify Yang and promote fertility.
Kidney (Shen) Neutral in nature. Primarily tonifies Kidney Qi.
Minister Yu Xi et al., according to Ri Hua Zi: Kidney tonifies the Middle, calms the Five Viscera, and strengthens Yang Qi. Make into wine or porridge for consumption.
Meat (Rou) Warm in nature. Tonifies the Middle, strengthens the Five Viscera, and benefits Qi and strength. Raw meat treats facial paralysis (Kou Pi); slice thinly and apply.
Tao Hongjing said: Among wild meats, roe deer and sika deer are edible. Raw meat is not gamey. They do not belong to the Earthly Branches, and their Eight Trigram association is neutral, allowing them to tonify gently without causing harm, so Daoists permit making them into jerky, superior to other meats. Although beef, mutton, chicken, and dog have tonic effects and fill the flesh, they are considered faults for departed souls and are not worth eating. Any meat jerky that does not move when roasted, moves when wetted, or does not dry when sun-dried is poisonous. *Tu Jing* states: Deer antler velvet and antler are not listed in the *Ben Jing* regarding their origin, but are found in mountainous areas today. Harvest velvet when antlers begin to grow in April, dried in the shade. Those shaped like small purple eggplants are superior, though some say eggplant-shaped velvet is too tender and lacks full Qi and blood; those branched like a saddle are more potent. Velvet should not be smelled, as its vapor harms the nose. Harvest antlers in July. Old deer have hard, good-quality antlers; boiled into glue, they are excellent for medicine. Currently, physicians value elk antler velvet and antlers more than deer, as they are more potent. The *Ben Jing* lists elk marrow and antler in the inferior category. Deer marrow can be made into wine; Tang dynasty formulas often include this method. Recently, people drank deer blood wine obtained from hunters who were lost in mountains, starving and thirsty, and survived by drinking liters of fresh deer blood, regaining strength upon return. Others imitate this by piercing the blood between the antlers, mixing with wine, and drinking. Deer meat is suitable for consumption from September to January; otherwise, it is inadvisable. Brain can be used in facial creams.
Lei Gong said: When processing, first grind Tian Ling Gai (Skull cap) into powder. Saw the deer antler velvet into slices, mix with good sheep fat and Tian Ling Gai powder, coat the velvet, and slowly roast until yellow and brittle inside and out. Wrap in a piece of deer skin and leave in a room overnight to let the "spirit" return. Next day, slow-roast until brittle, then grind into powder. For every five liang of velvet, use three liang of sheep fat, roasting until consumed. Another method: Soak in natural juice of Polygonatum for two days and nights, drain, dry, and grind finely to prevent thirst. For deer antler, select those superior to elk antlers: yellow, dense, heavy, and sharp-tipped. This is because these deer eat spiritual herbs. Elk antlers have yellow hairs like gold threads at the base and small side spikes; pale white ones are superior. *Gan Ning Ji* notes: These deer play with swimming dragons, causing this anomaly. Harvest whole antlers, saw off three cun tips. Soak in fast-flowing water for 100 days. Scrape off rough skin, clean, then boil in vinegar for seven days, adding vinegar as needed, keeping the fire going except during Xu hour (7-9 PM), from Zi hour (11 PM-1 AM) to Xu hour. When done, the antler becomes white and soft like powder. Grind finely, then decoct the glue with unfermented wine and dry. Scrape, re-grind, and sieve. For ten liang processed, use one yi of unfermented wine, decoct until dry. *Shi Liao* states: Eat meat from September to January to tonify deficiency and emaciation, benefit the Five Viscera, and regulate blood vessels. Eating it at other times causes cold pain. Antler treats carbuncles and ulcers, expels bad blood. *Yan Yi* states: Most animal meats belong to the Twelve Earthly Branches and Eight Trigrams. Yellow Di established the branches to name months and animals. Thus, roe/deer meat is premier among meats because it avoids the Earthly Branches. Its taste surpasses others. Sacrifices use deer jerky for this reason. Velvet is hardest to obtain intact without blood loss, as potency lies in the blood, often damaged during hunting. Trim hair on velvet, coat evenly with butter, quickly scorch over high flame to avoid fire damage. Once hair is clean, lightly roast for medicine. Some fake it with hemp velvet; must be careful. Head can make wine, add green onion and pepper when making mash. Antler glue has separate methods. According to *Yue Ling*, at Winter Solstice Yang arises, elk antlers shed; at Summer Solstice Yin arises, deer antlers shed; each follows Yin-Yang division. Using elk and deer velvet interchangeably is negligent. Deer/elk antlers grow hard in less than two months, weighing over twenty jin, hard as stone, growing several liang per day. No bone grows faster; even plants cannot match. Elk velvet tonifies Yang; deer velvet tonifies Yin. Velvet should not be too tender; four to five cun long with agate-red tip is best. Must be combined with other herbs for efficacy.
