衍义在秦龟条下已详述。
The tortoise shell is salty and sweet in taste, neutral in nature, and slightly toxic. It primarily treats leukorrhea with blood (abnormal vaginal discharge), breaks up masses and nodules as well as malaria, treats five types of hemorrhoids and erosive lesions of the yin, alleviates heaviness and weakness of the four limbs due to damp-bi syndrome, cures incomplete closure of the fontanelle in infants, eliminates stubborn head sores that are difficult to dry, treats yin sores in women, and addresses heart and abdominal pain caused by fright and anger, characterized by an inability to stand for long periods, cold and heat sensations in the bones, relapse of typhoid fever after recovery due to overexertion, or severe body chills and fever approaching death. Prepared as a decoction, it yields excellent results. Long-term consumption lightens the body, suppresses hunger, tonifies qi, enhances wisdom, and promotes appetite. It is also known as Shenwu (Divine House). It grows in the ponds and marshes of the South Sea and in lakes. It can be collected at any time. Care must be taken to prevent moisture exposure, as dampness renders it toxic. (It is incompatible with Codonopsis Radix [Shashen] and Blatta orientalis [Feilian].)
Tao Hongjing stated: Among these water-dwelling divine turtles, those measuring one chi and two cun in length are superior. Their shells can be used for divination and medicine, and they also appear in alchemical formulas. When used, they should be roasted. The urine of live turtles is highly effective for treating chronic cough and can also arrest malaria. Turtle meat made into soup is greatly nourishing and possesses spiritual properties; therefore, they should not be killed lightly. Many books record this, so I will not elaborate here. The Tang Ben Cao Zhu notes: Turtles can be used to brew wine. It treats wind-induced spasms, contracture of the four limbs, or chronic paralysis with loss of muscle control, all of which can be cured. Chen Yuxi et al., according to the Shu Ben Cao Zhu and Tu Jing, state: Turtles from the Yangtze River, Yellow River, and lakes are suitable. Those from Huzhou, Jiangzhou, and Jiaozhou have white, dense bones with distinct colors, all suitable for divination, and those suitable for medicine can be used conveniently. They are now found everywhere, and their meat can also be used for brewing wine. Xiao Bing stated: The shell treats wind-induced leg weakness; when roasted and powdered, it is taken with wine. The Yao Xing Lun states: Tortoise shell fears dog gallbladder and is non-toxic. Ash from burnt shell treats infantile head sores that do not dry. Carrying turtle bone into mountains prevents getting lost. Blood treats rectal prolapse. Ash also treats rectal prolapse. Ri Hua Zi stated: Small turtles used for divination have abdomens suitable for scapulimancy; those pierced all over are called Bai Gui (Defeated Turtle). They treat blood-induced numbness. For medicinal use, they are roasted with butter and also known as Bai Jiang (Defeated General).
The Tu Jing details are under the entry for Qin Turtle.
Shi Liao states: It is warm in nature and sour in taste. It treats removal of warm miasma, wind-bi, body swelling, and fractures. Additionally, carrying turtle bone into forests and mountains prevents getting lost. Its consumption treats bloody and white diarrhea, metrorrhagia, incomplete fontanelle closure in infants, breaking up masses, malaria, five types of hemorrhoids, yin erosion, damp-bi, yin hidden sores in women, and cold-heat sensations in joints. Boiling the juice for bathing is beneficial. Previously, only water turtles were used, not snakes-eating turtles. On the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, taking the dried and powdered head helps one navigate mountains without getting lost. Another prescription: Those pierced by diviners, roasted with butter, finely sifted, and taken with two qian of wine treat wind diseases. The Zhou Hou Bei Ji Fang treats sudden cough. Three live turtles, processed for eating, intestines removed, boiled in five sheng of water to yield three sheng, used to soak yeast, ferment four sheng of rice as usual, and drinking two sheng of the ripe liquor until finished, permanently cures the condition. The Jing Yan Fang treats dysentery before and after childbirth. One defeated turtle, roasted with rice vinegar, pounded into powder, and taken with rice drink. Sun Simiao stated: To treat infantile kyphosis (turtle back), massage the chest and back with turtle urine until healed. Sun Simiao's Dietary Taboos advise against eating turtle meat in the twelfth lunar month as it shortens life and should not be eaten casually. The Sha Zi Mi Lu states: It facilitates easy childbirth. Burnt turtle shell powder taken with wine in a cubic-inch measure. Baopuzi stated: The thousand-year spirit turtle has five colors. The male has two bony protrusions on the forehead resembling horns. Bathing it in sheep's blood allows the shell to be removed, roasted, pounded, and taken in a cubic-inch measure, three times a day, consuming one entire specimen.
