[Background Information]
Book: Pingzhu Chanke Xinfa (Commented Core Methods of Obstetrics)
Chapter: Zhongzi Ge (Song for Conception)
Category: Women and Children's Diseases
Thirty shichen (hours) amount to two and a half days; you must calculate the twenty-eight or twenty-nine days carefully. When menstrual blood is fresh and covers the ground, it is an auspicious time for conception. If one waits until the "metal and water" (menstrual flow) have completely passed, it results in "Kong Huoluan" (empty chaos/futility), rendering efforts wasted. It is like searching for residual red flowers among tree tops and bottoms. One should know that fruits form after flowers fall; why worry that osmanthus seeds will not form clusters? This poem appears in ancient texts but lacks detailed explanation. I specifically elucidate it here.
Thirty shichen are indeed two and a half days, but they must be counted from the onset of menstruation. After thirty shichen have passed, one may engage in intercourse properly. Within these thirty shichen, one must absolutely avoid movement; if moved, the woman will become ill. Hence, "calculate the twenty-eight or twenty-nine days." This means that before thirty shichen have elapsed, sexual intercourse is inappropriate.
"Fresh red covering the ground is the auspicious time" implies that once thirty shichen have passed, one need not wait for the bleeding to cease completely before attempting conception ("sowing seeds"). Even forty shichen may suffice. People often wait until bleeding has completely stopped before intercourse. By then, the uterus is closed. If conception occurs when the uterus is not fully closed, it is destined to be a female fetus. Thus, the text uses metaphors of clothing and artifacts: "When metal and water pass empty, there is only chaos; empty chaos renders construction futile, seeking residual red under trees is vain." This elucidates that conception is most likely when sperm enters while residual menstrual blood remains, which wraps around the sperm to facilitate pregnancy. If the blood is completely gone, the uterus is empty, making it difficult to retain the essence. Only in young women with robust blood and vitality might new blood arise immediately, but this would still result in a female fetus. Why? I say: this is "blood rushing the essence," where the essence is dispersed by the blood rush, and blood enters internally, forming the image of the Li trigram (☲). Human conception involves only essence and blood, coagulating in an instant. At the peak of sexual pleasure, when essence is ejaculated, whether the embryo is formed or not, both male and female possess a subtle perception. This depends on the moment when mind-spirit (Shen) and essence arrive together. If the mind wanders elsewhere, conception will not occur. Why? Because the mind-spirit has not arrived. The latter couplet of the poem states, "Know that fruits form before flowers fall; why worry that osmanthus seeds will not cluster?" This also means one need not wait for completion. Observe lotus, balsam, and pomegranate flowers; all fruit-bearing flowers form seeds at the center before petals have fully fallen.
However, the key secret lies in intercourse during the Zi hour (11 PM - 1 AM) after midnight. Sowing seeds during this Yang phase ensures a male child. Moreover, by midnight, both husband and wife are warm, and Qi and Blood are harmonious. Intercourse at this time easily yields a noble son. Delaying further into the menstrual period is better before the middle of the month. I frequently transmit this method of conception, resulting in many offspring, with efficacy as if divine.
I obtained sons late, so I searched scriptures extensively and investigated principles thoroughly. Physicians aid people; helping the poor with medicine costs, buying creatures for release, and burying exposed bones. Although I could not perform great hidden merits, perhaps this small supplement helped. Following this method, I had three sons in succession. This is heaven's blessing, yet it also depends on human effort. Do not say one cannot have children at fifty and give up. Prenatal and postnatal care concern life and death. Upon every consultation, I observe meticulously. All secrets I have realized, I wish to share with colleagues. Thus, those without children will have them, and difficult births will become easy. My compassionate heart will thus benefit the world.
Men take Buzhi Wuzi Zhongyu Dan (Heaven-Replenishing Five-Seed Jade-Sowing Pill)
Male essence is transformed and supplemented from blood. "Tian" (Heaven) refers to Qian (the Creative), representing Heaven. "Heaven generates Water" signifies the meaning of nourishing blood and adding essence. For those with physical insufficiency and the aforementioned four conditions, this formula can treat them generally. Modifications follow; do not interrupt medication.
Raw Rehmanniae Radix (8 liang, washed clean with clear water, boiled in a clay pot for one day and night, steamed and sun-dried nine times, baked dry)
Corni Fructus (4 liang, stir-fried with wine)
Dioscoreae Rhizoma (4 liang, steamed and sun-dried mixed with milk)
Moutan Cortex (3 liang, stir-fried with wine)
Poria (3 liang, steamed and sun-dried mixed with milk)
Alismatis Rhizoma (3 liang, stir-fried with salt water)
Angelicae Sinensis Radix (4 liang, stir-fried with wine)
Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (2 liang, stir-fried)
Eucommiae Cortex (2 liang, stir-fried with salt water)
Dipsaci Radix (2 liang, stir-fried with salt water)
Lycii Fructus (4 liang, steamed and stir-fried mixed with wine)
Schisandrae Fructus (2 liang, stir-fried)
Ligustri Lucidi Fructus (3 liang, steamed and stir-fried with salt water)
Plantaginis Seed (2 liang, stir-fried)
Rubiae Semen (3 liang, washed, dried, and stir-fried with salt water)
External use: One placenta (Ziheche), cleaned with licorice decoction, blood vessels removed, boiled until soft and mashed, or baked dry and ground.
Grind all above into powder, make pills with refined honey. Take 4-5 qian each morning with light salt water. Long-term use naturally generates essence and benefits the kidney. If other conditions exist, add according to the following, and surely obtain a son.
If Qi deficiency causes weak ejaculation, add 10 liang of Honey-fried Astragali Radix, boiled into paste (if wealthy, add 1 liang of Ginseng for better effect).
If essence is thin or scant, add 4 liang of Fish Maw (cooked with clam powder), 2-3 liang of Deer Antler Glue (cooked with clam powder), and 10 pig spinal tendons (extract juice, mix with Poria, steam, dry, and bake).
If premature ejaculation occurs, add 3 liang of Deer Antler Frost (ground raw and mixed), 3 liang of Dendrobii Caulis (stir-fried), 1 liang of Ginseng (baked), and 2 liang of Ophiopogonis Radix (stir-fried).
If constitution is hot, add 2 liang of Lycii Cortex, 2 liang of Nelumbinis Stamen, 2 liang of Ostreae Concha Powder, and use Rubiae Fructus paste instead of honey.
For those with cold essence and cold constitution, add 1 liang of Cinnamomi Cortex (peeled and ground), 2 liang of Morinda Officinalis Radix (stir-fried), 4 liang of Deer Antler Glue (cooked with clam powder), and 4 liang of Psoraleae Fructus (stir-fried with salt water, or add one pair of prepared Deer Antler).
For those who overwork their minds, Heart Blood is depleted, leading to impotence. This is Heart deficiency and Blood shortage, not Kidney Fire deficiency. Add to this formula: 4 liang of Longan Aril (steamed), 4 liang of Ziziphi Spinosae Semen (stir-fried), 4 liang of Poria Cum Ramo Xyloni (stir-fried). Ginseng, Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Platycladi Semen, and Yizhen Ren (Alpinia Oxyphylla Fruit) are all Heart-nourishing herbs that can be added. Naturally, Jun Fire (Heart Fire) will flourish. When Jun Fire moves, Xiang Fire (Minister Fire) follows. There is no case where the Heart does not move but the Kidney responds. People often attribute impotence to weak Xiang Fire and take large doses of Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, Deer Antler, Sea Dog Kidney, Sulphur, and Deer Penis—strongly heating drugs. Some even use these heat-inducing drugs for lust. Ignoring that intense heat consumes essence and blood, this is akin to "Yang generates Yin dies" in Taiji theory. Excessive fire dries up water, leading to strange toxins later, and the Blood Sea becomes barren, uncontrollable. The wealthy often suffer this. Be extremely cautious.
Women take Yi Mu Shengjin Dan (Motherwort Victory Gold Pill)
Women prioritize regulating menstruation; Liver Channel diseases are most common externally. Liver Qi stagnation often causes epigastric pain and rib distension, or abdominal masses causing menstrual obstruction, or early miscarriage after conception. Other gynecological methods prioritize harmonizing the Liver and nourishing Blood. Once other symptoms resolve, take this pill. When meridians are smooth, conception is possible. Using this pill with modifications below is also effective.
Raw Rehmanniae Radix (4 liang, boiled semi-cooked, add one bowl of wine, boil again until dry, steam, dry, and pound)
Angelicae Sinensis Radix (4 liang, mixed with wine, sun-dried, stir-fried)
Paeoniae Radix Alba (3 liang, stir-fried with wine)
Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (2 liang, stir-fried)
Chuanxiong Rhizoma (1.5 liang, stir-fried with wine)
Leonuri Fructus (3 liang, stir-fried)
Eucommiae Cortex (3 liang, stir-fried with salt water)
Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (4 liang, soil-stir-fried)
Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix (4 liang, stir-fried with wine)
Cyperi Rhizoma (4 liang, mixed with vinegar, wine, ginger juice, and salt water (1 liang each), steamed on rice, sun-dried, and stir-fried).
Grind all above into powder and mix evenly. Separately, boil 8 liang of Motherwort Herb (Yimucao) in water to make one bowl of paste. Add refined honey to make pills the size of paulownia seeds. Swallow 4-5 qian each morning with warm water, on an empty stomach. Or combine two batches into one for continuity. Modify according to conditions below.
If chronic abdominal distension hinders eating, replace Raw Rehmannia with Prepared Rehmannia, or replace Prepared Polygonum Multiflorum for Prepared Rehmannia.
If menstruation arrives early, or blood is purple due to Heat, add Moutan Cortex, Raw Rehmanniae Radix, and Scutellariae Radix (Tiaoqin).
If menstruation is delayed, or blood is pale due to Cold, add Cinnamomi Cortex and Fluorite (Zishiying).
If abdominal pain occurs just before menstruation, named Dysmenorrhea, caused by Qi stagnation and imbalance in Blood. Add Corydalis Rhizoma and Tangerine Peel (Guangchenpi).
If Liver Qi is disharmonious, or prone to anger, add Aucklandiae Radix and Cardamomi Fructus.
If Spleen and Stomach are deficient, and constitution is weak, add Ginseng, Poria, and Dioscoreae Rhizoma. This applies even if excessive blood loss occurred.
If prone to leukorrhea, add Dolichoris Semen, Coicis Semen, and Donkey-hide Gelatin. Ginseng and Poria can also be added. However, leukorrhea comes in five colors and requires careful differentiation. Generally known as white leukorrhea, if slightly greenish, it is Green Leukorrhea; add Aucklandiae Radix or少量 Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix). If slightly yellow, add Poria, Tangerine Peel, Ginger, and Jujube. If slightly pinkish-red, it is Red Leukorrhea; add Red Poria, Moutan Cortex, and Raw Rehmanniae Radix. If slightly black, add Plantaginis Seed and Trichosanthis Fructus (Huluba) to warm the Kidney.
These originate from the Five Zang organs, so they follow the color of each organ and exit via the Dai Mai (Girdle Vessel), hence called "Dai" (Belt). Some transform from Damp-Heat, some from Cold-Damp. Generally, those with strong constitutions have less leukorrhea. Although it is said "nine out of ten women have leukorrhea," it ultimately stems from one Zang deficiency. Overthinking damages the Spleen, anger damages the Liver, desire damages the Kidney. Qi stagnation generates Damp-Heat, mixing clear and turbid, causing Dai Mai to be unclear and Ren Mai to be unsmooth, leading to leukorrhea. If excessive white discharge occurs, it leads to consumption and damage. Early treatment is necessary to tonify Spleen and Kidney Qi and Blood. Another type is "White Yin," similar to men's "White Turbidity," originating from bone marrow, causing sallow complexion, weakness, soft bones, and lack of spirit. This results from sexual fatigue, delusional dream emissions, and agitated mind-spirit, named "Lin" (Strangury). Mild cases treated with Liuwei Dihuang Tang. Severe cases, coming in waves like water, require Renshen Heiguipi Tang plus Ostreae Concha Powder and Rubiae Fructus to astringe. Otherwise, menses will stop, leading to consumption. Hard lumps in the abdomen with occasional pain indicate "Jia" (Masses); regulate the Liver primarily. For Yin Hernia, add Toosendan Fructus and Litchi Seed.
