All Yang meridian sinews are located in the head. The sinews of the three Hand-Yang meridians converge and knot into the mandible and cheeks; the sinew of the Foot-Yangming (Stomach) meridian ascends to flank the mouth. When all Yang meridians are invaded by Wind-Cold pathogenic factors, the sinews become tense and contracted, thus causing trismus (lockjaw) with inability to open the mouth.
If the pulse is slow (Chi), it indicates survival.
The collateral channel of the Spleen connects with the Stomach, flanks the pharynx, attaches to the root of the tongue, and scatters under the tongue. The divergent channel of the Heart attaches to the root of the tongue. Now that both the Heart and Spleen viscera are affected by Wind pathogenic factors, stiffness of the tongue occurs.
The larynx/pharynx is the pathway through which Qi moves up and down. The epiglottis is the gate of voice; the tongue is the mechanism of sound; the lips are the fan of speech. When Wind-Cold lodges between the epiglottis, sudden aphonia (loss of voice) occurs. All these are caused by injury from Wind pathogenic factors, hence termed "Wind Aphonia" or loss of speech due to wind.
The *Yangsheng Fang* (Prescriptions for Nourishing Life) states: Sleeping while drunk in the wind causes aphonia.
Thieving Wind (Zei Feng) refers to fierce winds blowing from the south on the day of Winter Solstice, named Empty Wind (Xu Feng). This wind can harm humans, hence called Thieving Wind. When it harms the body, it causes pain that cannot be pressed or manipulated, and the body cannot turn; the painful area shows no heat on the surface. If injured by Wind-Cold, there is deep bone pain, felt upon pressure. One feels internal shivering coldness, desiring hot compresses on the painful area for slight relief; sometimes sweating occurs. If prolonged and not resolved, re-encountering Cold Qi combats with it, forming Scrofula (Luo Li) and hemiplegia (Pian Gu); if encountering Wind-Heat Qi combats with it, it transforms into Deep Bone Abscess (Fu Gu Ju).
Wind Spasm presents as trismus, back rigidity and straightening, resembling the state of epilepsy. In severe cases, there is stabbing pain in the ears; sudden general spasm and rigidity of the body indicates death. This is because Wind pathogenic factors injure the Taiyang (Bladder) meridian, and upon encountering Cold-Damp, spasm is triggered.
Diagnosing the pulse, if it is rapid/tense like a string, straight up and down, this is the pulse of Wind Spasm.
Wind pathogenic factors harming the person cause the waist and back to arch backward, unable to bend forward or backward, resembling a drawn bow, because the pathogenic factor enters the various Yang meridians.
When Wind pathogenic factors enter the Foot-Yangming (Stomach) and Hand-Taiyang (Small Intestine) meridians, encountering Cold causes sinew tension pulling the cheek, thus causing facial paralysis (deviation of the mouth and eye), abnormal speech, and inability to look straight ahead.
Diagnosing the pulse, if it is floating and slow, it is treatable.
The *Yangsheng Fang* states: When sleeping at night, ensure there are no holes near the ears; if Wind enters the ear, it often causes facial paralysis.
