Blood and Qi (Xue Qi) are what nourish the body. In patients with Xu Lao (Deficiency Consumption), the essence and marrow are withered and exhausted, blood and qi are weak, and they cannot fill out the muscles and skin; this is why they become emaciated. For treatments involving decoctions, hot compresses, acupuncture, and stone therapy, there are separate specific formulas. Tonifying, nourishing, and Daoyin (guiding and pulling exercises) methods are attached hereafter.
The *Yangsheng Fang* (Prescriptions for Nourishing Life) states: "Taking Yuquan (Jade Spring/Saliva) every morning makes one vigorous, gives a good complexion, expels parasites, and strengthens teeth." Yuquan refers to saliva in the mouth. Before getting up in the morning, rinse the mouth with saliva, swallow it when the mouth is full, then click the teeth fourteen times (two sets of seven). Repeat this three times, then stop. This is called "Lianjing" (Refining Essence).
It also states: "Swallow three times, then stop." This tonifies and nourishes Xu Lao (Deficiency Consumption), making one strong.
The Spleen manifests in the muscles of the body, and the Stomach is the Sea of Water and Grain. Xu Lao (Deficiency Consumption) causes disharmony among the Zang-Fu organs, weakening the Qi of the Spleen and Stomach, thus leading to an inability to eat.
The Stomach is a Fu organ, primarily responsible for holding water and grain; the Spleen is a Zang organ, primarily responsible for digesting water and grain. If the Spleen and Stomach are warm and harmonious, digestion can occur. However, in Xu Lao (Deficiency Consumption), blood and qi are depleted, and the Spleen and Stomach are cold and weak, so grains are not digested.
Sanjiao (Triple Burner) refers to the Upper, Middle, and Lower Burners. If there is heat in the Upper Burner, there will be chest and diaphragm stuffiness and fullness, bitter taste in the mouth, and dry throat; if there is cold, there will be acid regurgitation and spitting of foam. If there is heat in the Middle Burner, the body will feel heavy and the eyes may turn yellow; if there is cold, there will be frequent bloating and indigestion. If there is heat in the Lower Burner, defecation will be difficult; if there is cold, there will be lower abdominal pain and frequent urination. The Qi of the Sanjiao (Triple Burner) is mainly responsible for cooking and ripening water and grain, and separating the clear from the turbid. If this is not balanced, various diseases arise.
In patients with Xu Lao (Deficiency Consumption), blood and qi are deficient and exhausted, Yin and Yang fail to maintain their proper positions, and all Zang-Fu organs decline, thus generating internal cold. For treatments involving decoctions, hot compresses, acupuncture, and stone therapy, there are separate specific formulas. Tonifying, nourishing, and Daoyin (guiding and pulling exercises) methods are attached hereafter.
The *Yangsheng Fang · Daoyin Fa* (Guiding and Pulling Methods) states: "Sit on the ground with legs crossed, insert both hands through the bent legs; bow the head, and cross hands behind the neck." This treats chronic cold that prevents self-warming and deafness.
Patients with Lao Shang (Labor Injury) have weak Spleen and Stomach function and cannot transform fluids, thus forming Tan Yin (Phlegm-Fluids). "Tan" (Phlegm) refers to saliva and mucus accumulating in the chest and diaphragm; "Yin" (Fluids) refers to water retention accumulating in the Bladder.
