Qingmang (Green Blindness) refers to a condition where the eyes appear normal externally, with clear distinction between the iris and sclera, yet the patient is unable to see objects. This occurs because the essence and qi of the five zang organs and six fu organs all ascend to nourish the eyes. If the zang and fu are deficient, wind pathogens, phlegm, and fluid retention may invade. If there is heat, redness and pain occur; if there is no heat, internal obstruction arises internally. This indicates that the blood and qi of the zang and fu fail to flourish and nourish the eyeballs. Consequently, although the external appearance remains unchanged, vision is lost. This is termed Qingmang.
The *Yangsheng Fang* (Prescriptions for Nourishing Life) states: Do not block old wells or water ditches, as this can cause deafness and blindness in humans.
It further states: Bathing on the eighth day of the first lunar month can cure blindness.
When both the white and black parts of the eye are undamaged and the pupil is distinct, but vision is absent, it is named Qingmang. If additionally affected by wind-heat, the qi fails to disperse outward, accumulating within the eye, generating an opacity resembling a fly's wing that covers the pupil. Thus, it is called Qingmang Yi (Opacity of Green Blindness).
The eyes are the essence of the five zang and six fu organs, the gathering place of the major meridians, and the external manifestation of the Liver. When the zang and fu are deficient and damaged, they are invaded by wind pathogens, phlegm, and heat. The pathogenic qi transmits to the Liver and rushes upward to the eyes, causing blurred vision, referred to as "Mangmang" (blurred/vague). In general, ocular diseases caused by insufficient Liver qi, combined with wind-phlegm and labor-induced heat in the chest and diaphragm, result in the inability to see distant objects, perceiving everything as vague and indistinct. If Heart qi is deficient, it also causes blurred vision, aversion to firelight, or seeing flying insects and yellow-black spots (floaters). Palpating the pulse at the left cun-guan-chi position: a deep pulse indicates Yin; excess Yin results in blurred vision. A floating, large, and slow pulse is a counter-indication (Ni), indicating certain death. Treatments involving decoctions, moxibustion/warming, acupuncture, and stone therapy have separate specific formulas. Methods for tonification, nourishment, and Daoyin (guiding and pulling exercises) are attached below.
The *Yangsheng Fang · Daoyin Fa* (Guiding and Pulling Methods) states: At cockcrow, when preparing to rise, bend the index finger of the left hand, dip it in salt, rub the fingers together, and recite the mantra: "Daughter of the Queen Mother of the West, named Yiyu, bestow upon me eyes, I receive them into my mouth." Then meticulously massage the body. Frequently, after imitating the crowing of a rooster twice, swallow saliva to eliminate blurred vision, refine the light of the eyes, enable clear vision over ten thousand li, and see all directions. Swallow fourteen portions of saliva, and rub the eyes with warm fingers fourteen times, ensuring the eyes remain open and bright.
Some individuals have clear vision during the day but cannot see objects at night. The world calls this Que Mu (Sparrow Eye/Night Blindness). It is said that like sparrows, they see nothing once darkness falls.
