The manifestation of Youzhong (Wandering Swelling) involves colors of green, yellow, red, and white, with no fixed hue, wandering between the skin. The muscles exhibit a slight luster; this is Youzhong.
Youzhouzhong (Day-Wandering Swelling) presents symptoms similar to the aforementioned Youzhong, but differs in that it causes slight pain when the hand approaches or mild itching. It is said in the world that this is caused by offending the "Youzhou Shen" (Day-Wandering Deity).
Liuzhong (Flowing Swelling) generally has two manifestations: one is hot, and the other is cold. In Cold Zhong, the pain is dull and deep-seated, adhering to the arms; if located on the back, swelling rises, accompanied by sudden, severe pain; pressing with the hand or applying acupuncture causes swelling, which characterizes Cold Zhong. In Hot Zhong, the limbs feel hot as if roasted by fire, moving without a fixed location; the swelling may be palm-sized or plate-sized, appearing on the back and abdomen. In severe cases, the whole body feels hot as if on fire, shining brightly, with five-palm heat (heat in the palms, soles, and chest), dry lips and mouth, and a sensation like pouring water. These are all generated by the struggle between Wind Pathogen and Qi and Blood. Because it moves without a fixed place, it is called Liuzhong.
Dingchuang (Carbuncle/Boil resembling a nail head) is generated by Wind Pathogen and toxic vapors struggling in the muscles. There are ten types in total: 1. The sore head is black and hard with a depression; 2. The sore head is white and swollen and solid; 3. The sore head is the color of beans; 4. The sore head resembles the red of flowers; 5. There are black meridians inside the sore head; 6. The sore head is red and floating/vacuous; 7. The sore head is flower-like and yellow; 8. The sore head resembles gold foil; 9. The sore head resembles cornel fruit; 10. The sore head resembles pomegranate seeds.
Some cases initially resemble wind wheals; scratching them breaks the skin, releasing green-yellow fluid, with red-black meridians inside and slight swelling. Some cases are completely imperceptible until suddenly touched by clothing, causing pain; if one tries to locate the source intentionally, the site of pain becomes indistinct. Some present with muscle protrusions resembling fish eyes, with red-black discoloration and bone-penetrating agony. Prolonged stagnation turns into rotting sores, with deep holes beneath the sores, resembling punctures made by large needles.
Initially, they protrude like the cap of a nail (ding), hence the name Dingchuang. They cause aversion to cold, stiffness and pain in the four limbs, along with sharp pulling pains. Within one or two days, the sore turns scorched black, swells, shines, and the root becomes hard and strong, making it untouchable due to soreness and pain; these are its manifestations. Cases occurring on the hands, feet, head, face, and joints are most urgent, while those in other areas are less severe. If the toxin enters the abdomen, it causes restlessness and mental confusion, or a state resembling drunkenness. Patients suffering from this condition may die within two or three days.
The *Yangsheng Fang* states: If human sweat enters various foods, consuming them will cause Dingchuang.
