Treats cases where Shāng Hàn (Cold Damage) has persisted for eight or nine days, and after being incorrectly treated with purgatives, the patient presents with chest fullness, irritability, and palpitations, difficulty in urination, delirious speech, heaviness of the entire body, and inability to turn over.
Chai Hu (Cinnamon Twig Decoction's Chief Herb / Bupleuri Radix) (4 liang), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Gan Cao (Licorice Radix), Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), Fu Ling (Poria), Qian Dan (Lead Monoxide), Long Gu (Fossilized Bones), Mu Li (Ostreae Concha) (each 1.5 liang), Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (2 liang).
[Preparation:] Da Huang is boiled only for one or two boils.
[Explanation:] Regarding the exterior syndrome of the Yang meridians...
Chai Hu Jia Long Gu Mu Li Tang (Bupleurum Plus Dragon Bone and Oyster Shell Decoction) includes Fu Ling, Qian Dan, and Da Huang. Chest fullness (refers to pathogenic factors sinking into the chest after purgation), irritability and palpitations (refers to heat pathogens disturbing the mind), and frequent delirious speech; the main action of this formula is to settle phlegm and calm fright, while Fu Ling promotes diuresis.
Treats cases where Shāng Hàn has persisted for five or six days, where sweating was already induced but then incorrectly followed by purgation, resulting in fullness and slight binding in the chest and hypochondrium, difficulty in urination, thirst without vomiting, aversion to cold alternating with fever, and irritability; it also treats malaria characterized by predominant chills with slight fever, or chills without fever. One dose yields immediate effect.
Chai Hu (8 liang), Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) (each 3 liang), Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Mu Li (Ostreae Concha), Gan Cao (Licorice Radix) (each 2 liang), Hua Fen (Trichosanthis Radix) (4 liang).
[Preparation:] Use 12 sheng of water, decoct to obtain 6 sheng, remove dregs, and decoct again to obtain 3 sheng. Take 1 sheng warm, three times daily. After the first dose, slight irritability may occur; after subsequent doses, sweating ensues and recovery follows.
Chai Hu Gui Zhi Gan Jiang Tang (Bupleurum, Cinnamon Twig, and Dried Ginger Decoction) contains Hua Fen, Huang Qin, Gan Cao, and Mu Li. Pathogens in the Three Yang meridians cause Qi stagnation; transforming from the pivot facilitates the unblocking of Yang. (This reveals the medication involving the Three Yang meridians). Residual pathogens of the Tai Yang (Greater Yang) meridian are addressed by Gan Jiang opening the stagnation of Qi in the Yang Ming (Yang Brightness) meridian; Hua Fen assists Mu Li to enter the Yin aspect, raise fluids, and rescue the heat of the Three Yang meridians. Heavy use of Chai Hu and Huang Qin...
[Explanation:] In malaria attacks with predominant chills and slight fever, (Wind, Cold, and Dampness obstruct the muscle surface, causing Yang Qi to be depressed within Ying and Blood, hence predominant chills or chills without fever during attacks).
[Mechanism:] Chai Hu harmonizes the Yang of Shao Yang (Lesser Yang), using Huang Qin to harmonize the interior; Gui Zhi harmonizes the Yang of Tai Yang, using Mu Li to harmonize the interior; Gan Jiang harmonizes the Yang of Yang Ming, using Hua Fen to harmonize the interior; Gan Cao serves as the envoy to harmonize Yin and Yang. When harmony is achieved appropriately, one dose yields effect. Yu Jiayan stated in *Yi Men Fa Lü* (Legal Principles of Medicine): "..."
