Treats thirst caused by laborious malaria (Laonu).
The original formula of Xiaochaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) has Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) removed, and Gualougen (Trichosanthis Radix) four liang added.
Chaihu Qu Banxia Jia Gualou Tang (Bupleurum Decoction without Pinellia plus Trichosanthes Root) stops thirst and raises clear Yang (the efficacy of this formula is as such), curing laborious malaria. (Malaria is associated with the Shaoyang channel, hence Chaihu is used; "Laborious Malaria" refers to deficiency of Middle Qi. Later practitioners treated it with Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction), which is also effective.)
Treats Shaoyin disease presenting with cold extremities (Sini), diarrhea with a sensation of heaviness in the anus, or where the patient may have cough, palpitations, difficulty in urination, or abdominal pain.
Chaihu, Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), and Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, prepared) are ground into powder in equal proportions. Take one fangcunbi (a square-inch measure) mixed with rice water. Sini San (Four Reversals Powder) treats the pivot dysfunction of Shaoyin (similar to Xiaochaihu Tang, as Xiaochaihu Tang has the function of nourishing Yin and harmonizing).
Treats Shanghan (Cold Damage) fever where sweating does not resolve the heat, heat is bound internally causing fullness and hardness in the epigastrium (Xinxiapiying), accompanied by vomiting and diarrhea, alternating chills and fever, and a deep, rapid pulse.
Chaihu (half jin), Banxia (half sheng), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Baishao (each three liang), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, five liang), Zhishi (four pieces), Dazao (Jujubae Fructus, twelve pieces), and Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, two liang...). Dahuang Tang (Major Bupleurum Decoction) consists of Huangqin, Banxia, Baishao, Zhishi, Shengjiang, and Dazao decocted together. (This is a combination of Xiaochaihu Tang and Sini San. Ginseng and Gancao are removed because the pathogenic heat has already bound internally, and tonifying the Spleen further would be inappropriate. The former Xiaochaihu Tang treats only the Yang pivot, hence called "Minor"; here, both Yin and Yang pivots are addressed. If there is vomiting, raw Banxia should be used; if there is heat, Dahuang should be added. Dahuang serves to... similarly, there is still the implication of Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig) and Damian (Mirabilite), combining methods similar to Tiaowei Chengqi Tang to resolve exterior and interior pathogens.)
(Zhang Zihe's *Rumen Shiqin*) Treats muscle heat, steaming heat, accumulated heat, and residual heat after sweating, with a pulse that is surging, firm, wiry, or rapid; also applicable.
Xiaochaihu Tang removes Banxia and adds Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Baishao, and Dahuang.
Chaihu Yinzi (Bupleurum Drink) is essentially Xiaochaihu Tang, with Banxia removed and Huangqin, Danggui, and Baishao added. Applying slight diaphoresis and purgation along with attacking and tonifying simultaneously yields good results for accumulated heat in the Triple Burner and malaria. (This formula treats the Triple Burner...)
