Treats Baihe Bing (Lily Disease) after erroneous sweating treatment.
Baihe (Lilii Bulbus, 7 bulbs, decocted according to the previous method) Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, 3 liang, separately boiled in 2 sheng of spring water to obtain 1 sheng). Remove dregs from both juices, mix and boil together to obtain 1 sheng.
Treats Baihe Bing (Lily Disease) after erroneous purgation treatment.
Baihe (Lilii Bulbus, 7 bulbs, decocted according to the previous method) Huashi (Talcum, 3 liang, crushed and wrapped in cotton cloth) Daizheshi (Haematitum, one piece the size of a bullet, crushed and wrapped in cotton cloth). Boil in 2 sheng of spring water.
Treats Baihe Bing (Lily Disease) after erroneous emesis treatment.
Baihe (Lilii Bulbus, 7 bulbs) Jizi Huang (Galli Yolk, one yolk). First decoct Baihe as per the previous method, then add Jizi Huang, stir evenly, and boil until reduced to 0.5 sheng. Take warm.
Treats Baihe Bing (Lily Disease) that has persisted for one month without resolution, transforming into thirst.
Baihe (Lilii Bulbus, 1 sheng). Soak in 1 dou of water overnight, and use the water to wash the body. After washing, eat boiled noodles/biscuits; do not consume Xianchi (salted black soybeans).
Treats Baihe Bing (Lily Disease) where thirst has not resolved.
Gualou (Trichosanthis Fructus) Muli (Ostreae Concha) (calcined, equal parts). Grind into fine powder. Take one fangcun bi (a square-inch measure) with water, three times daily.
Baihe Dihuang Tang (Lily and Rehmannia Decoction): Decocted in spring water; sweet and cold nature clears Lung heat and disperses evil. (This is the standard treatment for Baihe Bing. Baihe clears heat in the Qi level of the Lung meridian; Dihuang clears heat in the Blood level of the Heart meridian. Baihe is sweet and cold, capable of clearing heat and generating fluids, entering the Heart and Lung meridians. Thus, it is undeniable that Baihe Bing is caused by stagnant heat in the Heart and Lungs.) Other cases are handled flexibly. If treated erroneously with sweating, add Zhi Mu (named Baihe Zhimu Tang [Lily and Anemarrhena Decoction]. Note: Erroneous sweating in Shanghan [Cold Damage] leads to loss of Yang; erroneous sweating in Rebing [Warm Diseases] leads to loss of Yin. Ye Tianshi's *Wenre Lun* [Treatise on Warm Diseases] states, "To rescue Yin, it is not about blood, but about fluids and sweat." Therefore, Zhi Mu is added to nourish fluids.) If treated erroneously with purgation, add Huashi and Daizheshi (named Baihe Huashi Daizheshi Tang [Lily, Talcum, and Hematite Decoction]. Erroneous purgation in Shanghan leads to loss of Yin; erroneous purgation in Rebing leads to loss of Yang. *Wenre Lun* states: "Rescuing Yin in warm diseases is relatively easy; unblocking Yang is the most difficult. Unblocking Yang does not lie in warming, but in promoting urination." Therefore, Huashi is added to open orifices. Daizheshi is added again, as Wang Jin San described, to "heavily settle the Qi of the Heart meridian.") If treated erroneously with emesis, add Jizi Huang (named Baihe Jizi Huang Tang [Lily and Gall Yolk Decoction]. Erroneous emesis damages the Yin of Danzhong [Chest Center], so Jizi Huang is used to tonify the Heart and calm the spirit.) The main formula, Baihe Dihuang Tang, is used exclusively for cases without prior sweating, emesis, or purgation. For thirst, use Gualou Muli San (Trichosanthes and Oyster Shell Powder). Gualou is bitter and cold, generating fluids and stopping thirst; Muli is salty and cold, guiding heat downward. There is also the Baihe Wash Formula passed down. (Skin and hair are the exterior of the Lung. Washing the skin externally can internally relieve thirst. After washing, eat boiled noodles; do not eat salted soybeans, as fear that salty flavors consume fluids and increase thirst. Wang Jin San in *Gu Fang Xuan Zhu* [Selected Annotations of Ancient Formulas] says: "The entire chapter discusses Baihe Bing having 'one source for all pulses.' It is not only governed by Ying and Wei [Nutritive and Defensive Qi], but all six channels of the hands and feet can cause this disease. Sweating, emesis, and purgation are all inappropriate. The text says 'one source for all pulses,' clearly stating the disease returns to the Lung. Using Baihe as the sovereign herb, sweet and cool to clear the Lung, can cure this disease, hence named 'Baihe Bing.' Assisted by herbs from various channels to clear collateral heat, treating the origin of the disease, sequential decoction methods should be used to comply with the principles of the hand and foot channels. Expect recovery in sixty days when Qi of the six channels recovers. If Taiyin and Taiyang are unaffected, and only Shaoyin, Shaoyang, Jueyin, and Yangming are diseased, expect recovery in forty days. If only Jueyin and Yangming are diseased, expect recovery in twenty days. Reading the clause 'without prior sweating, emesis, or purgation,' treat with Baihe Dihuang Tang. Once effective, do not continue taking it. Stool like lacquer indicates heat evil has been drained; continuing may cause transformation of symptoms. Differentiate based on headache during urination. The focus of all pulses lies in Shaoyin and Taiyang. Taiyang governs the Qi of the six channels; its channel ascends to the vertex and descends to connect with water passages. If Qi transformation fails, urinating downwards causes headache upwards. Shaoyin is the source of water generation; obstruction of opening and closing leads to urination accompanied by chills. If erroneous sweating injures Taiyang, headache during urination occurs; Zhi Mu rescues Lung Yin, allowing the Bladder (water organ) to know the mother Qi. Rescuing the Lung is thus rescuing the Bladder; this is the method of rescuing Yin for Yang disease. If erroneous purgation injures Shaoyin, chills during urination occur; Huashi connects upwards to the Lung and downwards to Taiyang Yang. Fearing Huashi's opening of fu organs and orifices might repeat the harm of sweating, Daizheshi is added to heavily settle Heart Qi, preventing sweat leakage. Rescuing Bladder Yang is thus rescuing Lung Yang; this is the method of rescuing Yang for Yin disease. If erroneous emesis injures Yangming, Jizi Huang rescues Jueyin Yin to stabilize Stomach Qi. Rescuing Jueyin is thus stabilizing Yangming and rescuing the mother Qi of the Lung; this is also a method of rescuing Yin for Yang disease. Using Baihe alone to extend to other formulas, it essentially adheres to the principle of tonifying Yin and Yang. From this, one can infer others. Students should derive understanding themselves." Xu Gao notes: Mr. Wang's discussion on the period of recovery and the principles of rescuing Yin and Yang is clear and detailed, surpassing other interpretations, so it is recorded in full.)
