Treatment for Intestinal Abscess (Chang Yong, an inflammatory condition of the intestines characterized by swelling and pus) presents with distension and hardness in the lower abdomen. Pain upon pressure resembles that of strangury (Lin syndrome, characterized by painful and difficult urination), yet urination is normal. There is intermittent fever, spontaneous sweating, followed by aversion to cold. If the pulse is slow and tight, the pus has not yet formed, and purgation may be employed. If the pulse is surging and rapid, the pus has already formed, and purgation is contraindicated. This decoction is indicated for this condition.
Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 4 liang) Mu Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex, 1 liang) Tao Ren (Persicae Semen, 50 kernels) Dong Gua Ren (Benincasae Semen, half sheng) Mang Xiao (Natrii Sulfas, 3 he)
The above five herbs are boiled in six sheng of water until one sheng remains. The dregs are strained out, Mang Xiao is added, and it is boiled for a few more boils. It is taken in one dose. If pus or blood is discharged, it indicates the abscess is draining; if no pus is discharged, stasis should be expelled.
The song states: The lesion is located in the lower abdomen (symptoms include pain upon pressure resembling strangury, normal urination, intermittent fever, spontaneous sweating, and aversion to cold); this is Large Intestine Abscess. Da Huang is used in four liang, Mu Dan Pi in one liang.
Wang Jin San stated: The Lung and the Large Intestine are exterior-interiorly related. In cases of Large Intestine Abscess, Lung Qi descends and knots at the head of the Large Intestine. Its origin is distant from above, but its location is close to below. Treatment involves moistening the Lung and the Intestines, relying primarily on the use of melon seeds. After administration, blood should be discharged; this is the blood before it has transformed into pus. If the pus has already formed and the flesh has decayed, one should first employ Pai Nong San (Draining Pus Powder) and Pai Nong Tang (Draining Pus Decoction). Hence, the original text states: "If pus has formed, do not purge."
Treatment for Metal Wounds (Jin Chuang, injuries caused by sharp metal instruments).
Wang Bu Liu Xing (Vaccariae Semen, ten fen, harvested on the 8th day of the 8th lunar month) Shuo Di Xi Ye (Achyranthis Bidentatae Caulis et Folium, ten fen, harvested on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month) Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, eighteen fen) Sang Bai Pi (Mori Cortex, ten fen) Chuan Jiao (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium, one fen, remove eyes and closed ones, stir-fry until oil appears) Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, two fen) Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix, two fen)
Of the nine ingredients, Wang Bu Liu Xing, Shuo Di, and Sang Bai Pi are burned to ash while retaining their medicinal properties. Each is pounded separately, sifted, and mixed to form a powder. Administer one fang cun bi (a measure equivalent to a square inch scoop) per dose. For small wounds...
The song states: For metal wounds, select auspicious days (according to spring and autumn seasons) to harvest Wang Bu Liu Xing. Sang Bai Pi and Shuo Di are used together (the three items including Wang Bu Liu Xing are harvested at appropriate times, each taking ten fen clearly).
You Zai Jing stated: Metal wounds sever the meridians, causing Ying and Wei Qi to become obstructed and lax. Treatment must ensure the meridians resume flow and Ying and Wei Qi interpenetrate before healing can occur. Apart from the herbs burned to ash...
Yuan Xi commented: At sites of injury from blades, if the wound is not sealed tightly, exposure to Wind results in no exudate from the wound opening, while exposure to Water results in yellowish-green discharge. Exposure to Wind may cause spasms; exposure to Water leads to damp-rotten sores. Wang Bu Liu Xing rapidly circulates blood in the collaterals to irrigate the whole body, preventing turbulent stagnation at the injury site. Sang Bai Pi drains Wind-Water from the muscles. Shuo Di leaves, also known as Jie Gu Cao (Bone-Setting Herb), seeps out Wind-Water from the sinews and bones. All three are burned to ash, intending for them to enter the Blood level to dispel evil pathogens and stop bleeding. Chuan Jiao dispels Wind from the wound opening. Hou Po dries dampness from knife marks. Huang Lian clears heat from the skin. Shao Yao disperses bad blood (stasis). Gan Jiang harmonizes Yang. Gan Cao harmonizes Yin. Using these as sovereign drugs aims to enter the Blood level to reduce swelling and generate tissue. When Wind-Dampness is removed and Yin-Yang are harmonized, the wound closes and muscle regenerates. This is the essential principle for treating metal wounds.
