Treats persistent vomiting during pregnancy. This pill is the primary treatment.
Ganjiang (Dried Ginger), Renshen (Ginseng) (each 1 liang), Banxia (Pinellia Rhizome) (2 liang).
Powder the above three ingredients. Mix with fresh ginger juice to form pills, sized like paulownia seeds. Take 10 pills with warm water, three times a day.
The song states: Persistent vomiting is named Ezu (Morning Sickness/Pregnancy-induced nausea and vomiting). Cold-fluid retention in the stomach causes lingering distress. Renshen and Ganjiang each 1 liang, Banxia 2 liang.
You Zaijing said: The Yangming meridian flows downward smoothly. Cold causes rebellion (upward counterflow), and heat also causes rebellion. When there is rebellion, fluid retention follows. For cold-rebellion, use this prescription.
Lou Quanshan said: In treating pregnancy-induced nausea and vomiting (Ezu), I have frequently used Banxia without causing miscarriage. This aligns with the principle of "having an existing pathology prevents injury" (Yougu wuyun).
Treats difficult urination during pregnancy while dietary intake remains normal. This pill is the primary treatment.
Danggui (Angelica Sinensis), Beimu (Fritillaria Bulb), Kushen (Sophora Root) (each 4 liang).
Powder the above three ingredients. Form pills using refined honey, sized like small beans. Take 3 pills with water, increasing gradually to 10 pills.
The song states: Diet is normal but urination is difficult. Pregnancy-related stagnant heat dries up body fluids. Kushen 4 liang combined with Danggui and Beimu. Take 3 pills, up to 10 pills. (For male patients, add Huashi [Talc] 0.5 liang.)
Nan Yuanxi's commentary: Kushen and Danggui nourish heart blood and clear heart fire. Beimu opens lung qi stagnation and drains lung fire. However, if heart fire does not descend, urine becomes scanty and difficult to pass; if lung qi fails to regulate the water passages to the bladder, urinary flow is obstructed. This prescription exemplifies the method of "treating lower disease by targeting the upper." Moreover, Beimu treats strangury and pathogenic qi, as explicitly stated in the *Shennong Bencao Jing* (Divine Farmer's Materia Medica).
Treats edema/fluid retention during pregnancy, characterized by heavy sensation in the body, difficult urination, aversion to cold with shivering, and dizziness upon rising. This powder is the primary treatment.
Kuimazi (Abelmoschus Seed) (1 sheng), Fuling (Poria) (3 liang).
Pound the above two ingredients into a powder. Take one fangcunbi (a square-inch measure) with water, twice a day. Recovery occurs when urination becomes smooth.
The song states: Dizziness and aversion to cold due to fluid retention. Pre-partum heaviness and difficult urination. (Both refer to difficult urination; the former is attributed to dryness of fluids, the latter to fluid retention.)
Nan Yuanxi's commentary: Laypeople fear that Kuimazi may cause miscarriage, but it need not be avoided. The *Zhongzang Jing* (Inner Classics) recommends adding Zisu (Perilla Leaf) to Wupi Yin (Five-Peel Decoction), decocted in water, which is very effective.
