Treats patients with insufficient Heart Qi (insufficiency of the Qi of the Heart) presenting with hematemesis (vomiting blood) or epistaxis (nosebleed); this decoction is indicated.
Rhubarb Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang, 大黄) (two liang), Coptis Rhizome (Huanglian), Scutellaria Root (Huangqin) (each one liang).
Take these three ingredients, add three sheng of water, and boil to obtain one sheng. Take in a single dose.
The song states: "Fire-heat attacks upward, damaging Heart Qi." (This refers to insufficient Heart Qi.) "Blood overflows in both the clear and turbid pathways." (When fire forces blood out through the turbid pathway, it results in vomiting blood; when blood exits through the clear pathway, it results in epistaxis.)
Wei's commentary: When pathogenic fire is excessive and forces blood to move recklessly, blood flows erratically. Blood is the fluid of the Heart; when blood is damaged, it fails to nourish the Heart, leading to insufficiency of Heart Yin-Qi. Therefore, it is termed "Heart Qi insufficiency."
(The song can be found in *Changsha Fang Ge Kuo*.)
Treats patients presenting with vomiting and chest fullness.
It also treats dry heaving, vomiting of saliva and froth, accompanied by headache.
Evodia Fruit (Wuzhuyu), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Fresh Ginger Rhizome (Shengjiang), Jujube Fruit (Dazao).
Commentary by disciple Lin Lifeng: The chest is the region of Yang, vast and empty like the sky. Vomiting with chest fullness indicates that Yin pathogens occupy the Yang region. Therefore, heavy doses of Shengjiang and Wuzhuyu are used... [text incomplete] to disperse cold and direct rebellious Qi downward.
(The song can be found in *Changsha Fang Ge Kuo*.)
Treats patients presenting with vomiting, borborygmus (intestinal rumbling), and epigastric stuffiness (plugged sensation in the lower chest/epigastrium); this decoction is indicated.
Pinellia Tuber (Banxia), Scutellaria Root (Huangqin), Dried Ginger Rhizome (Ganjiang), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Licorice Root (Gancao), Coptis Rhizome (Huanglian).
Eldest son Wei's commentary: Vomiting with borborygmus but without diarrhea, and epigastric stuffiness not caused by erroneous purgation, why is there such obstruction between the upper and lower? It is likely due to fluid retention in the epigastrium, obstructing the ascending and descending of Qi.
[Text incomplete] Banxia... etc., utilizing their light and clear ascending properties to achieve the effect of resolving stuffiness and directing rebellious Qi downward.
(The song can be found in *Changsha Fang Ge Kuo*.)
Treats patients presenting with dry heaving and diarrhea; this decoction is indicated.
Scutellaria Root (Huangqin), Licorice Root (Gancao), Peony Root (Shaoyao), Jujube Fruit (Dazao), Fresh Ginger Rhizome (Shengjiang), Pinellia Tuber (Banxia).
Son Yuanxi's commentary: Taiyang governs opening, Shaoyang governs pivoting. Dry heaving indicates that Shaoyang pathogens desire to exit outward via the opening mechanism of Taiyang. Diarrhea indicates... [text incomplete] Taiyang...

(See *Phlegm-Fluids* chapter.)
Treats various types of vomiting where food cannot go down; this decoction is indicated.
Yuanxi's commentary: The Stomach governs receiving food. If food cannot go down, it is due to deficiency-cold of Stomach Qi. Vomiting occurs because fluids follow the cold Qi and rebel upward. Deficiency of the Stomach with rebellious fluid invasion cannot be pacified without warming.
