Treats various cases of jaundice (Huangdan Bing).
Zhu Gao (Pig Fat, half a jin.) Luan Fa (Three pieces of tangled hair, the size of chicken eggs.)
Take the above two ingredients. Simmer them in the pig fat. When the hair dissolves, the medicine is ready. Divide into two doses for administration. The pathogenic factor will exit through urination. (Qianjin Fang records: A maid in the household of Taiyi Xiaowei Shi Tuo suffered from jaundice.)
Song says: Various types of jaundice accompanied by abdominal distension and hard stools. An ancient method transmits using eight liang of Zhu Gao. Three pieces of Luan Fa, sized like chicken eggs. Stop simmering only when the hair has dissolved and the medicine is cooked.
Nan Yuanxi notes: Zhu Gao primarily moistens dryness. Luan Hui (Hair Ash) primarily promotes urination. Thus, the Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing contains the phrase "self-returning divine transformation," which is most exquisite, meaning that hair is the residue of blood.
Treats jaundice.
Yin Chen (Ten parts.) Wu Ling San (Five parts.)
Mix the above two ingredients. Take one cun bi of the powder with rice water before meals, three times a day.
Song says: Jaundice offers two methods of resolution. (Resolving both exterior and interior.) Mix Yin Chen powder with Wu Ling San to taste. Five parts of Wu Ling San specifically promote water metabolism. Ten parts of Yin Chen effectively resolve jaundice.
Nan Yuanxi notes: Wu Ling San's function specializes in inducing sweating and promoting diuresis, assisting the Spleen's transportation and transformation. Yin Chen Hao's function specializes in treating dampness and resolving jaundice. Combined with Wu Ling San, it acts to resolve stagnation and promote dampness drainage.
Treats jaundice with abdominal fullness, difficult and dark red urination, and spontaneous sweating. This indicates that the exterior is harmonized while the interior is excess; purgation should be applied. This decoction is suitable.
Da Huang Huang Bo Xiao Shi (Each four liang.) Zhi Zi (Fifteen fruits.)
Take the above four ingredients. Decoct with six sheng of water until two sheng remain. Remove the dregs. Add Xiao Shi and boil again until one sheng remains. Take as a single dose.
Song says: Spontaneous sweating (indicating no pathogen at the exterior), difficulty passing stool, abdominal fullness. When the exterior is harmonized and the interior is excess, treatment must be appropriate to the situation. Xiao Shi and Da Huang are each four liang, and Huang Bo is the same amount. Fifteen Zhi Zi.
Nan Yuanxi notes: In jaundice, damp-heat intertwines and stagnates, unable to vent outward. Now, since there is spontaneous sweating, the exterior is already open. Abdominal fullness, difficult and dark red urination indicate...
(See Phlegm-Fluids chapter.) Treats jaundice where the urine color does not change, there is a desire for spontaneous diarrhea, abdominal fullness, and wheezing. Heat-clearing methods must not be used; clearing heat will inevitably cause hiccups. For those presenting with hiccups, this decoction is the primary treatment.
Yuanxi notes: Shanghan Lun states: "Stagnant heat in the interior causes the body to turn yellow." Here, it states that with unchanged urine color and a desire for spontaneous diarrhea, it can be known that there is no stagnant heat internally. Generally, wheezing and fullness belong to deficiency of Middle Qi; therefore, it is said that heat-clearing is contraindicated. The Master feared later generations might mistakenly administer cold agents damaging the Middle Qi, thus establishing Xiao Banxia Tang to remedy mis-treatment. Using Ban...
Furthermore, regarding jaundice caused by Middle Deficiency, I often use Lizhong Tang or Zhenwu Tang added with Yin Chen Hao, achieving good results.
